As a resident of that area, I am embarrassed by that "doctor's" behavior. When you add the fact that you had to pay out 5-Grand to be treated that way, it is unethical and immoral. There are a lot of good people in western Kansas and I regret you had to encounter a loser. Many of the doctors out here travel in from bigger cities and take 2-3 day shifts. I truly hope that "doctor" was not from the town you were in. Even if you were both junkies, his lack of compassion was flat-out evil.
I wondered if the town was Colby. Pretty sure that’s where my dad had a heart attack driving home from Denver, as I posted above. My dad got a lot better treatment than Otis and Amy.
Reminds me of the old saying" do you know what they call the guy who finishes dead last in medical school? Doctor"
Is there anything worse than feeling helpless when someone you care about is sick and can't get help. I'd rather be the one sick than the one having to stand by. I'd love to see Amy perform one day even if it's just sitting on your porch on the internet!
One of the many - many - reasons there needs to be universal health care in the US. In Europe, contrary to all the propaganda and lies, taxes work out essentially the same for the working and middle classes as the US, and health care is essentially free and available to all at any time.
The privatized system in the US, there to make well off and rich people even richer at the expense of the vast majority, costs society twice per capita what it costs societies with universal health care. And you and your family are not held ransom by your job for fear of losing it means losing your healthcare. All in all a moral - and socio-economic - outrage.
And by the way Otis, that doctor in Kansas should have his license removed, at least for a period. If you or anybody else had been a junky it wouldn't have changed the scandalous decision by a doctor to refuse to treat someone in pain.

Great story Otis. Life on the road is not all it’s cracked up to be. I’m not a gigging musician but I have travelled a lot for work the past dozen years, having to be somewhere at a certain time to make a speech / give a performance. It is grueling and when someone is with you it increases the stress level exponentially. You’re there to work and your companion is there to just ride along. You have to take care of work and her. Hard to explain that but it makes everything tougher. Glamorous life eating at gas stations and staying at cheap hotels or in a strange bed at a friends house. Love your podcasts.
Bev and I have 40 years this December and she never goes along with me on the road. She is a very private person and prefers the company of her animals to all the people I have in my travels. It works well for us. Amy is fantastic!
I had very similar incident in your fine state of Indiana on long term work assignment. Bedford Indiana specifically. Late night visit to ER and doctor was convinced I was in opioid withdrawal. Finally convinced them otherwise, and was treated for actual problem. While on same trip I had a cold and went to pharmacy for cold tablets and they had the stuff locked up and required me to give detailed info just to purchase one bottle!!!! No more long term work assignments for me in Southern Indiana thank you. Rural America is like living in a dystopian bad dream.
for the record - I have a friend who is on pain meds do to a car wreck and surgery with metal implants. we were on a trip (my gig) our plane flight got delayed twice with 3 day hold over . she was running out of her meds cause of hold over - even though she had a refill left we couldn't find any pharmacy that would fill it . all 3 stores made me feel like we were trying to get away with something and refused to fill it . after repeated calls to her doctor in California finally were answered , her doc called the pharmacy (In Mississippi) to have them fill it . what a nightmare. we can relate !!! I never knew pharmacy could be so cruel
Those who don't get migraines generally don't understand how bad it is. To call it a "bad headache" doesn't convey the what the person is going through. The first time I had one, I thought I was going to die. I am impressed with how you listened to Amy and didn't treat her as if she was overreacting.
Another thing you touched on that people often don't understand is what a grind it is to be on the road. I used to travel in my work and have to spend weeks at a time living in hotel rooms. I often had people tell me how lucky I am to get to travel for work. When the day is done, I much prefer spending the evening in my own house, being around my own family and pets, and sleeping in my own bed. Travelling for your work is similar to migraines- unless you've lived through it, it is hard to comprehend.
Wow, this one had me captivated all the way through. I will never take the NHS for granted again.
I sure enjoy your stories of the road. So many folks think being on the road as a musician is just a vacation. They don't realize it is a job first and foremost. Thanks for your insight. Love the channel.

I have a lot of face-time w/ docs & nurses I'm old, 75 y.o., and I know a lot about the many things that ail me. Most docs believe me if I can explain myself well enough, nurses are more sympathetic without much ado. There are some docs I wouldn't give you 2 cents for, and these same docs typically are the ones who don't believe you. When I run into doc so full of him/herself that they can make no room for my needs - by believing me, I flag them and refuse to spent another 5 minutes w/ them, even if it means walking out on them cold.
Some docs aren't worth a heap of dust or the time it takes to sweep it up.

Me, my puke bucket and handful of heavy duty seizure meds twice a day. I know that feeling of sitting in dark rooms wearing sunglasses, crying in a panic not knowing how bad it's gonna ramp up and for how long.
I have both a Migraine disorder and Trigeminal Neuralgia for which I had brain surgery a year and a half ago. I'm just beginning to see some improvement now and as You know, Any improvement is better than none!
A-holes and opinions we all have them I just don't understand why some choose to be the one. None sadly more so than Dr's!!! And some emts 😢

I feel your pain Otis..and Amy`s..I could go on for hours on how Dr`s have mistreated my Wife because she has a bad back...US health care...what a joke.......
I was constantly plagued by migraines all throughout my 20s and 30s. I lived off of Midrin and Vicodin. I once had one of my worst episodes while driving into Nashville to showcase for Arista Records at Douglas Corners. The medication got me me through it, but it was a rough evening to say the least. I kept an extremely detailed journal of my diet, sleep patterns, and general environment so I could identify my triggers in order to avoid them. It helped but wasn't a cure all. You're right, the road is far less glamourless than most would imagine. The time on stage is great. The other 20 hours of the day...sometimes a real crap shoot.
I live in Nashville with musicians. The allergic disease here is widespread and migraine headaches are often associated. Touring, like everything else, is a double edged sword.
I feel for you.. I was hospitalized for ten days because of cluster migraines.I had the same migraine every day, every 12 hours for three months... They had me hooked up to an IV with the most heavy duty meds (dilaudid) for over a week. Finally a neurologist gave me a medication called Imitrex, a subcutaneous self- injectable non narcotic, ergot based med, which knocked out the migraine within 5 minutes every time, with no side effects.
For years I was hoarding up that stuff because you never knew when a migraine cluster would come on, or how long it might last... I'd have them on average a couple times a year, and the Imitrex saved my ass.
Eventually I moved across country to the desert, and, though I still have a bunch of other chronic health issues, the migraines are thankfully gone; I haven't have one in over a decade. But I sure know how that feels when a Dr pegs you for a med-seeking junky and refuses to help. They should be held to account for that kind of abuse; it still happens to me all the time, and I'm in my late 60s...

Thorazine is a heavy duty medication used for psychotic episodes in mental institutions. It is taken orally usually. Intramuscular is for sever cases of psychosis . Her lying on the floor made the doctor think she had a mental breakdown. It was used in the 1950's and '60's, and replaced by Haldol, a much better drug, in the 1970's. Haldol is made by Johnson& Johnson. My father worked for J&J when Haldol came out.
Amy should have been kept in the hospital and monitored, for temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen overnight. Thorazine shuts down areas of the brain. I am sorry Amy had to meet Dr. Demento in rural Kansas.

Very similar thing happened to me Three months ago. $2000 for the emergency room,
$1000 for the doctor, and $200 for the Benadryl. Went in because my blood pressure was way way high. Won’t do that again.
I get migraines too. If I need to go to the ER, they administer something for nausea, IV fluids, Benadryl and a pain reliever like Ultram. I don't believe Thorazine is a recommended migraine treatment.

Substitute the word Canada and I would have written your exact words. I asked an American once why they liked their "health care" system and he told me some story about God, George Washington, guns, and the border.
I am feeling for Amy right now Otis. My wife rest her soul was plagued by migrains and there's nothing worse than having that occur and there not being a hospital or Dr office around. It is a scary situation, now she doesn't have that burden anymore. Thanks friend

I really love Amy's song ! Her voice is smooth as can be and the song is just beautiful.....As for hospital bills......Read an article a couple years back about rural hospitals price gouging patients....There was even a list of the worst offender hospitals that were currently under investigation....2 of them were in rural East Tennessee where I live....And this happened to be in the Wall St. Journal so I tend to believe it.... Hopefully all that ridiculous garbage has been reeled in by now.....
Man Otis that is a heck of a story and you tell it so well. More people need to be compassionate and loving and telling stories like this sure helps. I also appreciate that I am a guitarist who does a very comfortable life and has only performed with his guitar teacher lol. I would love to be able to perform at some point and I’m trying to get to that but at 52 it is for the love of it and trying not to get overwhelmed. I recall smokey clubs and loud music, super tired, lack of bathroom access, broken everthing on an old ford van, behind schedual for a traffic jam, 600 miles+ between gigs, etc...Migarin head ache?! What could bring that on B-). Edit = Was a drummer in Austin in 90's and played with anyone. Flew home to the midwest for two days over Christmas. Got a call that a floating band I knew was short a drummer for a New Years gig. Hate my family = next flight out. Talked to a girl in an airport - missed my flight. Awake for two days and multiple flights later finally land in Austin for New Years. Bass player from another band is paging me on the PA (carple tunnel surgery so could'nt play at the moment). He had been living in the airport because he didn't have the moneny to get out of parking after so long. I wrote them a check. Met up with the band and headed for Dallas. Nut falls off the alternator on the interstate. Pulled over and tried every screw on the drumset = no dice. Took the doghouse cover off the engine inside the old van and a "security" 2x4 from paneling in the rear door. Bass player sat on one end with the other providing stability for the missing part for about 45 minutes. We arrived with the best rock -n- roll hair in history after the hot air from the engine puffed it up blowing straight through the truck into us. Little late - packed house - four sets - got paid. Miss it. Never want to do it again B-).
Thanks for the story Otis. Most of the time we see and hear about the exciting and exotic travels of a musician. That said the pitfalls and hard times are real. Thinking back to a previous story, the time you were kicked off your flight by an Air Marshall would have been enough for most folks to say it's not worth it.

Hey Otis- thanks for sharing! My wife has a similar problem and it’s brutal. Just hate to see when this happens but I’m glad it finally became manageable on your trip. As the significant other certainly we don’t experience what they go through but it feels gravely serious when you can’t provide any kind of help to someone going through that situation that’s immeasurably important to you. “Blame the Wind” is so lovely! i hate the stigma of pain and addiction. so brutal and heartless - addicts and chronic pain patients both deserve dignity
That’s quite a story. It reminds me of a vocalist we had in our band who was seriously diabetic. I can’t tell you how many times I had people tell me they just saw our singer shooting up in the bathroom

When I was young I would get migraines.
It was horrible. Light was like hammers striking the backside of my eyeballs.
Throwing up constantly. Sometimes my nose would bleed profusely during the episodes as well. I'm lucky it stopped when I got older.
My wife would only go to gigs inside our state.
Doctor got his license from the state police.

I normally love a good road trip, but too often some malady hits while away from home. Most recently some sort of "altitude sickness" (?) out around Yellowstone, but in the past I can remember several miserable flu things, my back "going out" on multiple occasions and one whoppin' kidney stone while on the road. Totally sympathize with Amy (enjoyed the song by the way!) - starting to think I'm not cut out for travelling much myself.

I love these stories. Feels like I'm sitting around shooting the stuff with buddies. I was on the road for 20+ years, and it is definitely not for everyone. Towards the end of my time on the road my wife and I played as a duo and I took her out for her first taste of touring. While we really enjoyed getting to spend that time together and playing music together, she hated most of the drudgery that is being on a low-level tour. Driving in a van for countless hours, being treated not so well by promoters/clubs, eating poorly, heaven being getting to sleep in a not too filthy motel room, etc. She stood it for that 2 week tour and decided that she was done with it. I kept at it for another 5 or so years before I had enough and decided to spend more time at home working my "regular" job (an electrician) and getting to watch our daughter grow into a beautiful young woman. We still record together and play local gigs for the fun of it. As you said it can be whatever you want it to be. Take care man. Peace.

Instead of paying that $5k, pay a lawyer. That doctor has earned it. People like this don't respect anything but money. I'm glad she survived intact.
I have had those migraines where it takes a couple days of pills until they are squashed. I know the panic of running out too. Terrible pain.
Cluster migraines. The pain is indescribable. I’ve had three separate episodes of them, each about five years apart. Fortunately, the last episode was Christmas of 2000 with no reoccurrence., Thank God. Can’t remember the name of the little red pills the neurologist prescribed. They didn’t help much with the pain, just shortened the duration of the episode. BTW, the last episode hit while I was in Birmingham Alabama for a Christmas event, traveling by myself. Not much worse being alone and that sick that far from home. I certainly understand not wanting to stray too far afield.
You should have shown the docktor the fighting side of you!! The only good thing with migrane is that it fades away with age. I'm now 68 and it's like a breaze.

You dont have to travel to enjoy playing. I've been putting videos up of me and my old band I was in from the ages of 18 to 22) and they are in their 70s now. We did a lot of traveling and played wild bars in the 70s, and now here we are over 40 years later just having fun without any of the pressure or bullshit. And I cant tell you how happy we all are because of it . I have less than 200 subscribers but I've made a lit if friends from all over the world since we started. We love it, writing and playing together again.

Great story Otis! I struggle with really bad panic and anxiety, so I completely understand this. I'm taking a train up to Connecticut (I struggle driving any distance) from New Jersey to record my first full length studio album tomorrow. I'm definitely feeling some kind of way about the journey, but the payoff far outweighs the pain. This video was right on time and spoke directly to me. Thanks for sharing this deeply personal story. I've had a history of medical intervention as a sickly kid and believe me that Kansas doctor was not a rarity.

Years ago my parents were leaving Denver, headed home I-70 East, when dad had a heart attack. There was a blue hospital sign just ahead, I want to say the town was Colby, Kansas. Probably the same place y’all went. Pretty sparse country. They saved my dad. You seem like a live and let live kinda guy Otis, but that hospital would have heard from me again.
All that stuff you said about flashing lights causing migraines is totally true and used to happen to me as a kid driving to fishing trips or whatever. Sorry you guys had to go through that. I once drove myself to the Vanderbilt ER for a migraine bc otherwise I wanted to cut my head off. They gave me compazine. Which worked.
Otis, I don't mean this to come off a particular way. You seem like the type of guy that isn't afraid to make a fuss, especially if you need something done and nobody is doing it. When you first said that thing about the woman at the hospital thinking you were junkies. I was thinking to myself. He's going to lose it. Because his girlfriend is hurting and in pain and he just wants to get her relief.
But, I think keeping a cool head and think things out. Honestly speaks volumes about you. You came up with a clever solution and a way of asking. Really I'm not that surprised. You seem to genuinely care about people and understand the struggles of the working man that's something I will always admire about you..... It's a little weird that she thought y'all were junkies. I don't know if there's more to the story or maybe how y'all may have looked that day. It is what it is.
Excellent exemplary behavior and patience on your part, Otis. Very wise thinking. It goes without saying that I am embarrassed for members of our medical aristocracy who can throw the baby out with the bathwater in a situation like this. My apologies as an American! I guess there have been many Druggie Con men who have caused many in the medical profession to become calloused. We all lose in this case.

I have never had a headache iny life. But my wife would get em.. I seen it just like you said. And had similar experience with doctors.
To me you and your program are simply perfect and we really enjoy all your videos that My Son and I always enjoy finding them so interesting and entertaining!
Some peoples interest in music and their lack of musical ear and skills will have them reject almost everything!
But it’s their prerogative to say what they want as it’s a democratic society!
There are different tastes for everyone which makes this world so interesting!
What could be better than cheap hotels, bad food, and indifferent crowds? Just about everything! It changes if you move far enough up the food chain. But you have to move up pretty high to make a difference. For me, the price was too high.
Another reason not to be out “on the road” is that it doesn’t often provide great healthcare coverage.

Otis.! I totally get Amy’s situation.. My wife,Anne gets migraines.. in fact,she’s had a headache of some level for years.. but she still does what she can..
And that’s great advice about the road not being for everyone..
.. and speaking of meds..and junkies.. and pin-headed doctors.. this so called “opioid crisis “ has sucked in a lot of deserving,pain-plagued people into the backpedaling crusade by the medical profession..

Well the opioid problem was started by the Sackler family(maker of oxy) They wanted to increase sales so they hosted all expenses paid conferences for the doctors to retrain them into believing that oxycontin is not habit forming. They trained them to "help patients manage pain no matter how low the pain level". Soon they were shipping millions of pills to small rural towns and had doctors in empty store fronts writing prescriptions by the gobs. It all goes back throu the docs to that billionaire family.

What part of 90,000 plus deaths a year isn't a crises? The deaths have doubled in only 6 years. In 2015, because of the rise in overdoses, life expectancy dropped for the first time in 2 decades. I think it's unfathomable that anyone would say it's anything less than a crises. FWIW, I'm not an anti-drug zealot at all, in fact I think that most of the problem wouldn't exist if we had never had drug laws to begin with... but 90,000 deaths a year is unacceptable.

And yes.! Drugs should be legal. This is supposed to be a free country,yes.?

After my ex and I split up I was in a funk. Basically any poison I could get my hands on I took excessively. I sold the house and decided for once in my life I was gonna be happy and do what I wanted to do, become a singer/songwriter. Had always played guitar but never wrote actual songs. Saw John Moreland a month or two later in Sav, Ga….2/3 days later I packed my bags and went to Crossville, Tenn to get sober. Been sober 3 years now. Got back home and pulled a “Bon Iver.” Locked myself in my old room (was quarantine time anyways) for a good 2 & 1/2 years just getting all the crappy stuff outta the way. Final started liking my own music about 6 months ago and was gonna release my first album at the end of July. Was gonna jump in my car after sending WB Walker my album and busk/play open mics.My dad had a massive heart attack 3 weeks ago and now I don’t wanna leave nor play music ‘till he’s back on his feet. Still sending WB Walker that album tho. Gonna be hard when I decided to get in that car and go though. Real tough.
I feel for her I haven't had migraines in probably 10 years thank God and I have no idea why but my migraines weren't even the worst I knew people had worse ones but light is the worst thing for me when I have a migraine just the worst. I'm glad she got that shot I'm sorry it was so much money especially back then that's crazy.
My brother, and several of my family members have migraines just like that. They’re serious.
i/me had sum bad ones as kid. wanted to punch hole in head. got car sick alot. luckly no migranes for sum time. after van roll over in '95 i got bad virtigo, unable to lay flat for a year without dizy. it re acoured few times. one last similar when newly maried family trip to the rim of Az. i got hit hard a fast as drove into Globe.Miami. never had any gud meds.
Imitrex for migraines my wife used. Headache and other symptoms gone in half hour. Wonder drug. We lived through all the terrible side effects of the migraines , know your pain and all.
Not everyone belongs on the road and apparently not everyone should be practicing medicine. There's a reason he's practicing in the middle of nowhere Kansas.

Hello Otis from Colorado. Sorry your experience here wasn't so great. I feel so bad for Amy. I can't imagine getting three migraines that close together. Breckenridge and Garden of the gods are beautiful but hard to enjoy when you're in that condition. I get them myself and no fun at all. In a pinch try Advil and caffeine.
Otis i just want to say that the tote that i bought from you and Amy has been the most durable damn thing i have ever owned. even carried it with me to Europe! really look forward to ever new video. appreciate what you do alot man, thank you...
As I was watching this , Julie Miller came to mind. I love both her and Buddy but her health issues will not allow her to tour at all. Also I loved that song that Amy did. So many great things about that tune.

My GF suffers from migraines as well. For unsolicited drugs advice from a stranger on the internet, Ubrelvey seems to really work well. I've had the same emergency room experience with kidney stones. Apparently faking kidney stones is something junkies do.

I feel for you and Amy. My mom has had migraines most of her life. There are plenty of triggers. Turns out that peanut butter is one of hers (allergy trigger). It took 75 years to figure that out..
I get them, too, but my triggers seem to involve severe weather changes. Maybe life on the road is not for me, but I'd still like to give it a shot. At least once.
Amy has a great voice, and that was a wonderful song.

What kind of a doctor refuses to treat a patient based on an unsupported supposition about their lifestyle? No. You don't have to answer that. I think we all know.
Otis, I'm so sorry for what happened to Amy. I've had migraines for years, and I understand what she went through. I'm also a patient advocate for people who suffer from chronic pain caused by incurable diseases or injuries. These days, ER's are the LAST place to go if you are injured or sick because the majority of ER personnel believe ALL people who are suffering with physical pain are addicts.This is due to the manufactured opioid crisis and propaganda put forth in the media and medical schools.. Thorazine is an antipsychotic medication which is used to treat schizophrenia, and one of its side affects is severe cardiac arrhythmia. It's similar to haldol and should never be used to treat migraines. 3 out of 10 people in America (roughly 100 million) suffer from a debilitating disease or injury, and they are being denied appropriate care and medicine due to the opioid "crisis". Legitimate patients are punished while people who are addicted to heroin, fentanyl, meth, etc. are given preferential treatment at addiction treatment clinics that receive federal funding. You'll never see an addict looking for heroin in an ER, yet the propaganda continues. It's a tragedy to see so many sick folks being refused care, and a majority of them are veterans. I'm also appalled at the bill they charged for essentially performing medical malpractice. I understand why Amy prefers to stay home, and I hope she never suffers from another migraine. I hope you have safe travels and take care while you're out on the road☀🎸🛻
Thorazine injection in the buttocks is usually given to people maybe acting up mentally to calm them down and make them sleep….. I get migraines VERY rarely and they do have an iv injectable form that helps stop vomiting but it seems all doctors initial impressions of everyone theses days is they are junkies unfortunately

As a retired nurse i am embarrassed and ashamed to hear stories like this that are unfortunately way too common. Everyone needs a strong advocate like Otis EVERY time you go to the ER or hospital, not even a bad idea for doctor visits these days. If something like this happens to you, another solid proposal you can offer the doctor is to do a quick urine drug screen. They love doing shit like that anyway. Sorry for your experience Otis, i've sat with many migraine patients over the years and i feel you man. I've had to step in and speak directly to doctors many times, it never got easy. I don't know what it is about doctors (actually, i think i do, most of them hate their jobs the way they are today) but some of them still have that old top of the food chain attitude, not all, but enough that you never know what you are going to get in the ER.

I never toured the states but Canada & Europe & also not suited to touring because unfortunately most of the bands I been in were all into drugs witch effected the whole thing in Canada we have health care & Europe I had a few issues but was seen be hospitals with not much money being paid. But ur story seems like a nightmare. I feel for that experience cause we were also acused of being junkies back in the 90's just because of our appearance. But in ur case I really feel the pain u guys endured. I stopped touring we couldn't even cross the border so our record company dropped us witch I won't mention the name. But I totally understand. & I stopped touring cause of similar issues. Im it's so beautiful to hear that u guys are still together & yes as much as the USA is such a powerful country I do like the Canadian & western European sistem for health care cause in more than one occasion if we were in the states for a band member having to visit the hospital or such we would of been in big trouble or even having trouble with the law there. So I stopped touring because of our life style in 2000 once I had my second child. Some members of my band continue to tour but I couldn't so I completely understand this story. When I lived in Thailand I got bitten by a dog. So I looked online what it cost to get rabie shots. I was looking at American prices and I thought I'm in trouble. It was thousands of dollars for the shots. So I went to the hospital in Thailand and it cost me... $25. The price of medical treatment in the states is a crime. Btw I didn't have medical insurance that's just what it costs in Thailand when you walk in off the street. When I left the hospital the nurse came running after me. I thought "ok. I guess it was too good to be true. She's gonna ask me for more cash" but she said "hey I forgot, here's some extra medication for you." For free of course.
