Dave always comes through when we need him. A living legend pays tribute to one that’s passed. Beautiful.
I love that Dave Matthews always seem to show up when things matter or people need something pure.
T BZ well said
True
I got to go to his Red Rocks fundraiser show for Katrina victims in 2005. He had already played-I think-three nights in a row and added this one. You could tell he was completely exhausted but put on the most beautiful event.
Agreed. ❤😊
That little smile Dave does after singing “you come home straight and you come home curly “ kills me ... so pure
The smile after "You come home straight and you come home curly" says it all. Even at a time like this, Prine's lyrics are still magical.
"So what in the world's come over you
And what in heaven's name have you done
You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness
You're out there running just to be on the run"
The weight and depth of John's lyrics is just astounding. Great job by Dave Matthews.
Great song loved it,he john prinr would like it 2.
Once again, Stephen picks the perfect song, perfect musician to fit in emotional time. Bravo to Dave Matthews bravo.
Shedding more tears
My heart broke the second he started singing.
Dave’s voice ages like fine wine
A legend paying tribute to another legend.
Tonight, like many nights before my "illegal smile" is for you , Mr. Prine.
Rip.
University and the illegal smile song1979
Illegal Smile is the soundtrack for my life too.
@@rebbeshort as a teenager, my best friends dad (who looked identical to Jon Lennon) used to play all the songs from the 60s and 70s for us on his acoustic guitar.
Every now and then he'd play illegal smile , and that is how I learned who mr. Prine was.
Great memories.
Stay healthy friends.
@@mikeconley9590 Thanks Mike. You and yours take care there too.
His guitar playing is really under appreciated.
He doesn't solo, but his rhythm and the crazy fret positions he can reach are amazing.
He has a way of casually sort-of, kind-of picking, strumming or whatever, but what comes out is always quite intricate.
He didn;t miss a note.
His own guitarist says that, too, and says Dave's got the strongest pinky finger for hammer-ons of all people he knows
Many a campfire guitarist have cursed this truth the minute they looked at any of Dave's tablature. Dude's a fuckin guitar player.
A John Prine fan since 1973.Listening to and learning and playing his music has brought me joy.Thank you brother and rest in peace.God bless and comfort his people in this time of great sorrow.
Thank you Dave. Your cover of Angel from Montgomery introduced me to John Prine. The best musical gift I've ever received from a stranger.
I forgot how much I liked Dave Matthews
Than you Dave and thank you Steven. May John Rest In Peace.
This series of covers in tribute has inspired me to listen to more John Prine. Something I should have done while he was still with us. So sorry John, will try to do better, and thank you for leaving us with a heap of great music.
John has opened a new nightclub. You'll be able to see him performing there eventually.
Thank you David...☝🏼💜
Rest Easy John Prine...☝🏼💜
Ones age becomes an exercise in laying bare the voices that have awakened you and guided you through memories in the making. These voices hold you while you lay in the darkest hour of the day struggling to say goodbye to one of their own. The chorus is never the same when the sun rises after moments like this. Only memories remain...
understated and immensely powerful tribute. damn Dave, you outdid yourself for John. we are all in your gratitude. Godspeed John.
This song feels like a ghost of a memory of a thing I'm not sure happened anymore, and people another me knew...
Anyways, really made me feel a way tonight... beautiful rendition
Annie Thyme , your words spoke to me, thank you .
John nailed it
and I've never heard this song before so that's not a good comparison,
but this song/ sounded so good.
I couldn't find words either, it was Divine. ✨
Is there a word for what you are eloquently describing? I often feel this and have never had someone write it down like you.
I think this might be the most wonderful comment I've ever read on youtube. Thanks for bringing some luminous beauty to a place that is normally a dank, dark troll nest.
Thanks Dave, I’m not crying... it’s just raining in my house where I’m sitting with a cat on my lap watching TH-cam on my iPad.
You might wanna invest in a roof...
Four cats for me but a similar sentiment. Hang in there!
These aren't tears of sadness... I'm just cutting onions...maybe I'll make lasagna
I saw this last night and fell in love! Such a beautiful rendition.
This song reminds me of a time when the only thing that broke our hearts were the lovers on the run.
Thanks Dave John Prine was one of my favorite. It was so sad to see him go he had so much to give he'll always be missed. And Dave Matthews Band is one of my favorites. About the bus s*** happens Happens what we need today is peace love and understanding and remembering a great man who lost his life to a virus that's killing lots of people right now.
That's one of my fave Prine songs...
Thank you. John is gone, the everything is so f'ed up right now, I feel so messed up. This cover helped thank you. I just...🖤
first time hearing this song...The insight behind the words is unbelievably precise and truly special. Wow RIP to John Prine 🙏🏼
I think there are going to be new JP fans popping up during this pandemic.
I was listening to John's music (while in lockdown, and drinking beer) the day before we all found out he was stricken with the virus. RIP John.
heartbreakingly beautiful..ellyn
So heartbreakingly beautiful!
Omg. SO beautiful. I always loved listening to nanci Griffith sing this song. This is my new favorite! Thanks Dave!
Thanks for honoring John, Dave.
This was an awesome way to end the night. Thank you.
So beautiful. Dave's voice is magical
When I hear this song and think of the lyrics, I imagine I'm standing in front of a mirror singing to myself. That's what a year of isolation will due to a mind influenced by great story telling. Dave's voice has all the pain and questions this past year has caused our tribe. No more hubris, please...
I had the immense pleasure of seeing John Prine perform at the Cambridge Folk Festival. He was frail but utterly mesmerising. This is my favourite song of his.
Wow!! What a cover handsome Johnny would be flattered.
Love. Love. Love. Love. All the love I have had or will ever have. So much love. Love.
Dave Mathews ROCKED ON for the late John Prine! Thank you ✨💞✨
Truth is Love, and Love is the most powerful force in the Universe!❤️💕❤️
John's music was descriptive of my generation, i.e. "Sam Stone", "Illegal Smile", et.al. Lucky to have seen him a few times. To hear his work by Dave played in tribute very heartwarming. DMB is my favorite current live band. Leonard Cohen is gone too, & Tom Petty. Tough time for my singer/songwriter heroes.
This made me weep, but thank you anyway. It's perfect and wonderful.
Rest in Peace John Prine.
Filled my life with music worth listening to.
Thanks for doing this Dave I'm sure J.P. would have appreciated it.
Thanks for showing it Stephen, really enjoying the homemade shows.
Keep up the good work!
Peace, love and health be with you All.
✌💞🎸🎶🌹👍

This song is so beautifully done by Dave thank you Dave Matthews.❤
John Prine wrote a lot of great songs, but this may be the greatest.
I love this tune. It was great with Nanci Griffith and this is splendid too. Well done Dave.
I just remembered the best times of my life. Thanks Dave. Keep Prines music alive for days to come. 🌿
Tears are running down my cheeks. What a way to wake up this morning!
Such a beautiful version. John was a gift and treasure I discovered years ago that stirs my soul.
2 legends, brilliant lyricists, poets, American treasures. Feeling all the emotions rendered when a song like this is sung. How fortunate are we to have experienced these 2 transcendental poets during our time on earth. Truly a gift. Thank you Dave Matthews for your poignant and lovely rendition. Thank you John Prine🥰 RIP.
Dave Mathews is South African!
Fantastic, Dave. Thank you - so very tender.
Love Dave's phrasing and that compelling smoky voice.
One of my all time favorite songs. My first intro to John Prine’s music.
* tips an imaginary hat *
Thank you, Dave.
I love Dave. 🥰 He's got an amazingly soothing singing voice. He is my fav singer/band. I must have 15 DMB cds
Dave is the best musician on the planet.
Great love Dave
Is there anything he can't sing? This is the best tribute to John I have heard. He also does a great Willie Nelson tribute,
Thanks, Dave. You did Prine proud. Beautiful.

Feels like Mr.John Prine is still here!

Chills. Thank you.
I'm an old cynic but that's lovely

That was very nicely done. Miss you John. ❤
John’s songs are more needed than ever, keep them ringing.
FIRST time someone mentioned JOHN in these comments. What???
Lovely. RIP John Prine. ❤️
Wonderful! You did John, proud!
Dave is a national treasure
Thanks. A beautiful tribute by a legendary storyteller for one of the best of us. Ride on , John. Hope to see you on the other side.
Dave is not too busy when his presence mattered to most people. Got to see him . ❤

The world has lost a very a special man and God has a great guy to play music for him😭😢🙏

Beautiful and haunting. Thank you Dave ❤️
Just going to miss john his voice his spirit and his unbridled fashion of opening our hearts with a pure glimpse of our beautiful ugly selves.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. 😢💘✊THANK YOU.
Dave needs to record this love this version
Your favorite songwriters all have the same favorite songwriter. RIP JP
This is why I listen to music .... this is why I listen to stories.... this... is why I listen.
My favorite Prine song.
You break my heart --- Dave
Moments like this make me wish I could give two thumbs up for a video. 10/10
I have never heard of John Prine before , but that song he wrote and played by John Mayer was fing amazing. Will definitely add him to my artists lists.
RIP John.
But tge souvenirs album. It is a great introduction to many Prine classics. John was a legend in folk/country but his songs transcend just one genre. He was also a lovely person that when you saw him live he told us so much about the song, how it was written, what his mind was like at the time, and all of us Prine fans are never the same person walking out as we were when we walked in....
@@HENSLEYDMB I forwarded this clip to my father in law who used to play a lot of folk guitar and he asked "How did you not know who John Prine is?" LOL
I clicked because of Dave Matthews. I had no idea who John Prine was, but ended up feeling very sad over his death after hearing this one beautiful song.
That was the first song I ever heard by John Prine. There was a video played. I wasn't sure how Dave Matthews would do on this, but it is that voice of his! I love it! Thanks for doing this song. It is actually my favorite Prine song.
beautiful
Thank you Dave....
Thank you Dave Matthews!
So beautiful! So beautiful!
Another time, another world. Peace ✌
Oh that voice of his ❤️
Beautiful
My God such a beautiful thing. Thank you Dave ...
And please remember to thank John Prine.
I heard an Irish group named the Sawdoctors do an awesome rendition this song awhile back but I've yet to find their version on TH-cam. Hope someone will post their version. John Prine RIP you will be missed...
