  • Roberts Radio Restoration : Roberts Rambler
    The Roberts Rambler is one of the basic transistor radio sets of the 70's. This one came to me in a batch I bought as an eBay haul, typical spares or repair. Of all of them I decided that this one would be the first to tackle. Now I also mentioned this batch to Paul, the owner of @Codeeze Radio Workshop and he is an expert with Roberts Radios. He suggested doing a collaboration and this seemed like a great idea. I was to do the electronics side of the little radio and he would tackle the rather abused outside cosmetic appearance of the set.
    So here is my bit done. To see the completion of the set, follow this link to the video and you can see how it turns out! • White Roberts Rambler ...

    I enjoyed our collaboration on this radio. It did seem at first glance like it may be a stretch too far. But I like a challenge. George, you did a fantastic job on the electrical. Kudos Brother.

      It wasn't a bad little job in the end. Looked like a scrapper at first glance but there wasn't much damage per se.

      Paul is a top guy when it comes to British transistor radios and is an expert at recovering them with different materials as well as restoring original finishes. He has a stock of original rexine coverings from the original manufacturer of it before they stopped production. I couldn't think of a better guy to restore the external case.

      Just a fun little job.... Not many components in a rambler and it was a standard all caps dead job Victor. Even the tropicals were cracked so full recap, not just the electrolytics. My biggest great was a sick varicap but it was about the only thing that survived intact.

    • @GeorgeChristofi

      Glad you liked it Gregg. It was so close to being a scrapper but when Paul came to visit we hatched the plan to fix it up. Economic repair? No way but as a project... Definitely worth doing.

    Amazing job george, and it works now :-D
    The insides were a bloody mess and a half, but you have dragged it back from death and healed its problems :-D
    Wow!! i have never seen crapacitors in such a bad state over 30+ years of doing repairs :-(
    Even the explosion of a reverse polarityed 470uf coke can is not quite as nasty, just brown smelly tissue splatted everywhere and bits of cap case distributed widely.
    I really like the mat black chassis, it looks smart and it fits in spot on :-D.
    Thankyou for re growing that beard so fast he he :)

    • @GeorgeChristofi
      @GeorgeChristofi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't figure out how they died like that. Chemical action might kill one but not two. Explosion... Different mess... External corrosion is about the only thing I can think of, but to react like that with aluminium it must have been an external compound.

      Indeed Mike. When I first saw it in the pile I was thinking it would just be junk and it nearly got thrown away. I showed it to Paul when he came to visit and we cooked up the idea of restoring it... If it was a paid job it would be costing us more than its worth but as a video project... a bit of fun.
