But Found So Much More! Welcome to Santa Cruz de Tenerife...

- This city has something for everyone and hopefully the video does too! (Don't Worry, it's not all football) We drove just over an hour from Los Gigantes to Tenerife's Capital City - Santa Cruz. I don't think I was expecting it to be so colourful and cool. We really made the decision to come here to watch a football match (Tenerife vs Castellón) but it wasn't just the game that ended up impressing us so much. We hope you enjoy the video and it shows a different side of an island full of surprises :)

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is the reality of a weekly upload schedule, coupled with doing everything myself and sticking to a budget. Often I need to film 3-4 videos in one trip to make it cost-effective and that means a queue for the Saturday morning slot. This is just part of TH-cam life I’m afraid, but I will only upload something if it still has value for you as a viewer. Please also remember I’m a regular guy with all the responsibilities of life and this can sometimes mean I need to keep emergency videos for times when that life gets in the way!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a 9-5 job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.
#SteveMarsh #Tenerife #Spain
Sorry - it appears midroll ads crept into this video! I was scheduling it away from home and I think that’s where it went wrong, I don’t tend to use them and they’ve now been switched off! Apologies if this affected your viewing pleasure 😂
@@steve-marsh Thank you, Steve.
From Denmark: ...Yep, sense the Moroccan atmosphere some places there w. the colourful buildings etc. Thank you SO much again, for sharing your lovely adventure with us. I like how you treat each other w. respect and kind, even under some pressure. Thats what I also seek to do when in company w. others, even though I have exp. a lot of the opposite.. You are both such great company and Alicja (spelled right..?) just look so beautiful also in that amazing dress and hat. She is beautiful inside and outside. I wish you both much love, peace and adventures further on
TH-cam studio is sneaky with those middrol adds, it’s always ticked on automatically, I always have to remind myself to check if i switched them off.
Brilliant video nice city and stadium thanks for sharing
Hi Steven love all your videos love espacially you and alicja you are such à nice couple you should bring alicja on your ferry videos bye Steven from canada
Why can't all visitors from the U.K. be like you both? Honest, open and engaged with Spain. Gracias de corazon!
We feel the sun and turn into feral animals, I can only apologise - I've been to Benidorm with British doctors and police officers, I was disgusted by their behaviour.
Hey really appreciate this!
@@jonjohnson2844apologise for a tiny minority ? I’m 53 and my behaviour is impeccable along with my wife . I won’t apologise why should you. I meant this in a polite way but apologise I don’t have to
@@jonjohnson2844 I don’t and neither does most decent people 😊
@ It's a minority of people who misbehave, but obviously the majority who immerse themselves in the culture don't get noticed!
Scotland and Tenerife both have the same patron Saint of Saint Andrew which is why you see the Saltire Flag everywhere in Tenerife. It’s their national flag.
They fly the saltire in respect of the Scots who were their allies against England at the battle of Santa Cruz
It's a darker shade of blue on Tenerife Flag.
Thank you - that answers my question.
Not the same patron saint but nearly the same flag (the pantone of the blue is different and a cross is a little bit thicker) but you're right about that is inspired by the same saint symboi, "La cruz de San Andrés". Greetings from Tenerife!
Somebody in the comments stated that Tenerife has the same flag as Scotland because they have the same St. Andrew as a Patron saint. They made an incorrect assumption, and St Andrew is no way associated as a Saint representing any of the Canary Islands. The Tenerife flag is literally the flag of Scotland (a little darker blue) as a tribute to Scotland. Legend has it that is either something to do with recognizing the bravery of Scottish sailors at the battle of Santa Cruz or an association to the Grand Lodge of Scotland (Scottish freemasonry). Our lady of the Candle is the actual Patron saint of Tenerife.
There's not many people who could make me watch a video about going to a football match! You and Alicja have made it a fantastic experience. Thoroughly enjoyed. Safe travels
Me too - probably the closest I've ever come to watching a football match 😏
Great fun as always. I was an extensive traveller and had plans to do more in retirement , unfortunately health issues have curtailed that. However on Wednesdays and Saturdays I come travelling with you. Thankyou. I don't think you know what a blessing you are to so many people.
What a wonderful comment.
You're a gentleman.
@@ericdugdale6292 I also love travelling with our two intrepid voyagers
I’ve been housebound for six years caring for my 95 year old grandmother thanks to American greatness, me and my family cannot afford an aide, can’t take any vacations, we don’t travel anywhere longer than 15-20m away, I’m here every single day; I work from home when I can as a commercial artist.
Every one of these videos is an escape for me, I make plans and screenshot maps and subscribe email alerts from companies like Smiril lines, research where we will pick up our rental cars, all in hope that some day we can see some of these places.
I just love Steve and Alicja for offering these mental escapes for me and others, I’d love someday to share a coffee by the campfire in the woods some day with you two!
One can dream, right?
Especially in this dark era of my country, as an American, I apologize to the world that we could not stop this madman, not all of us are evil or stupid.
We know that. America is/will always be a great country. Beware of his last two years in particular. Mechanisms will be in place hopefully by then.@@StuBotNYC
Just finished binge watching all your videos and now up to Date .. You two are a perfect team and always a Great watch.. 😀😀

Tenerife has a history playing in the top flight of La Liga. They have been promoted to the top tier on four occasions, including a 10-year stint from 1989 to 1999. The club managed to finish as high as fifth in the league table on two occasions during that period, which qualified them for the first round of the UEFA Cup. They most recently played in La Liga in the 2009-10 season.
Tenerife played agains Brøndby as far as I recall.
Hey cheers for this!
and 1997 UEFA Semifinal vs Schalke 04 ! epic wins against Real Madrid in early 90's too
I recommend everybody to see a local match : lots of fun, culture and you meet the locals. We visited a football game on Mallorca a few years ago and this video reminds me of that. And 10 points for geography for Steve for knowing all the islands! And you are both so positive ! An example for all of us.
Another great video I'm 72 in March and not as mobile as I was been most places and both of you are great company and boost my spirits
The Tenerife flag was adopted in 1845, and the saltire was added in 1989.
The flag's navy blue field is a darker shade of blue than the Scottish flag.
One theory is that the flag was adopted as a way to honour the bravery of Scottish sailors in the 1797 Battle of Santa Cruz. Great video as always and you both brought good luck to the home side. I hope you bought one of the flags.
This is the second video I see from your channel, and I'm really enjoying it, thank you for coming to my native island, greetings from Tenerife!!!
Thanks so much mate!
2nd video. Oh my, are you in for a surprise. Welcome to the family.
Your videos are so watchable. This is perfect to accompany my breakfast. Thanks to you lovely people.
I've never really been a football fan but used to go to watch Hertha BSC in the Berlin Olympic station about 58 or so years ago. The fans weren't then segregated either, the atmosphere was great and the bottle of rum my friend and I brought along made the rounds between home and away supporters. Heck, those were the days.
You are so right!!!
There's a few English lads which regularly go to Germany for the footy, cheaper than going to a premier league match.
Interestingly there's still a group of Forest fans who visit and stay with FC Cologne fans and vice versa. Started when we beat them in the European cup semi final in 1979 !!!
Been to Santa Cruz a few times on cruises and walked exactly where you both did. Loved the comment on how big the P&O Azura was. She is not even the biggest ship in P&O's fleet, let alone the biggest in the world! Great video on the footie and how civilised fans can be. Hope some UK fans take note!
Santa Cruz is wonderful! But that ship was like a block of flats (apartments).
Loved the sights n sounds of Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Glad you popped into the market as I love a Spanish market ! Great Tenerife won the match .
Yay! A Steve Marsh video and cup of coffee - an excellent start to a Saturday 👍
That was great. The crowd at the match were real entertainment. Thank you for my Saturday morning excitement.
I've always preferred the North of Tenerife, good to see it looking so beautiful. Thanks for the memories. ❤❤
2 people drive a car, walk a city, watch a football match!! Yet you make it funny, informative and hugely enjoyable. Any chance of a Greenland video before it changes hands?
I think this was one of your noisiest videos! I am used to the serenity you normally find by going to places out of season, or early in the morning before the crowds come out, or the mountain walks. Something different, but very enjoyable. Nice to see that the fans were all there just to enjoy the game and each other. 🥰
Hi Steve and Alija thanks for the enjoyable video enjoyed watching the soccer match even though i am a rugby fan hope we can see more of Tenerife it looks beautiful take care and safe travels. 😊
I was thinking what a nice car you have Steve, then i realized you were in Tenerife. Agree with Alicja, toilet is high on the priority list after finding a parking lot. Great video, Santa Cruz is a beautiful place.
what a great example of fan behavior at the match .can just imagine a London derby match being like that lol...seems the city itself seems really beautiful and worth a visit..many thanks guys
Have you never heard of the El Classico? Or the higher prevalence of racist abuse in Spanish football?
@@Nicho_Ldnas with everywhere, no ones perfect
My comments echo many others: as a non-football fan, I still enjoyed tagging along as you found your way along the streets, shoreline, and even was amazed at how many spectators were in that stadium! What a day. Thank you for letting me come with you on the unexpectedly excellent adventure. Best wishes from Canada
Great video. Me and my brother attended this game also, our first time. Sat next to the ultras, fantastic atmosphere and people were very hospitable. Highly recommend to any football fans visiting the island to get to a match. Being Hibs supporters, it was like going to ER but in the sun with less despair for a team in poor form, fans were full of hope, optimism and support. Instant soft spot from Scots for some reason as well 🏴 VAMOS TETE!!
Hi there I really enjoyed your video it is great to see both set of football fans sit together and there was no trouble what so ever.
Stevie “wee bit” Marsh is off to a “wee” footy match! What a legend!
Excelente vídeo Steve. I haven’t missed a home game in 21 years. A good reflection of the city and its football club. We play today at 8pm. MUST WIN!
VAMOS TENERIFE!!!!!!!
You two are one of the best and most normal couples who do not draw attention or create excessive narcissistic drama to yourselves on TH-cam. I always hated it to end it so soon.
Its nearly 40 years since I've been to Santa Cruz and it still looks pretty much the same. Great place.
"Notas de viaje" 😀 You are just great - both of you!
Love from Denmark
Thank you Steve & Alicia for another good video. We stayed in Puerto De La Cruz in November & had a day trip to Santa Cruz with a tour guide, didn’t get to see much of the city & was on edge immediately once the tour guide told us to be aware of the professional pickpockets working the area around the market as they come off the cruise ships in November as that is when there are more tourist around. The best part of our day was the visit to La Laguna & when we go back in September will definitely take a bus to re visit both places.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Great to see you both having a great time
great video, thanks for taking us along. Hugs from Canada
Fantastic video Steve & Alicja, thanks for making another Saturday a feel good day.👍.
Oh, how wonderful to escape from the grey UK, even for 37 minutes. Loved it. Thank you!
Dang good trip Steve and Alicia! Thanks for taking us along, wish I was there.
Santiago Caltrava - designed the Auditorio de Tenerife Adan Martin. He also designed the Harp shaped bridge in Dublin. His work is all over different countries - Spain and Portugal included. Great video as usual.
Great video, as always. I've never been to Tenerife, but it is now more prominent on my bucket list. I have seen a few football matches in Spain, in both the top and second divisions. The atmosphere has always been more relaxed - but no less passionate - than games in the UK. I'm pleased that you enjoyed it!!
I'm a new viewer to Steve's site but I'm hooked. I went looking tonight to make sure Steve was not stuck in the blizzard in Scotland during one of his rambles with the trains all shut down. Does not seem so but do make a quick video to let us know where you were during the storm.
Yes I was wondering the same thing.
Hi Steve.I've been watching you a very long time. I suffer with PTSD from my service. I just wanted to let you know that every Saturday I look forward to your video. I can at least have some time relaxed watching your videos.
I certainly did enjoy the experience you offered me. What a beautiful place Tenerife is. And at the stadium the fans acted in the true sporting
fashion that sport is all about. I don't think I'll ever be able to get there in the flesh, but I will be able to replay your video amigo Steve!
Steve and Alicja, another fantastic day out in the sun with my favourite travel companions. All from the comfort of my settee. Presumably back now in stormy Scotland with maybe a new video. Take care from Julie and Keith 🏴
LOVED this one, guys! And the interactions between you added to your enthusiasm for the city and for the soccer! Made me happy :) Thank you!
I love episodes when you two are together. And the setting, so beautiful!
Wow you captured the feel of the game so well and was good to watch. What a beautiful city. Loved the music artists faces on the rocks which was fantastic and never seen that before. 😀
My husband and I went to Alaska (from Finland) and we wanted to rent a car suitable for Alaska. It was a Ford F150 truck. It was on one of the upper floors of the garage at the airport. We had to drive down a spiral with a big truck. Well, eventually we did get down and had one of our best holidays ever. Thank you Alaskans for being so nice!
I am a female from Canada who worked with 2 Irishmen obsessed with the World Cup and Football. Went along with it initially, but really did not get the fanaticism around it... But I do love the enthusiasm. Thanks so much for the awesome video. A magnificent place. I never realized how busy the Canaries are with people.
This was a fantastic video, you showed us so much! 😊 What a beautiful part of the world. The fútbol match was electric! 🎉 ⚽️ Thanks for bringing us along to enjoy the day!
Just need to say that I had tons of mid-roll ads on this video, which I’ve never experienced before on your channel. I don’t mind occasional ones but these were rampant…
We r absolutely love all your videos! Watch all the time...here in north west! If you ever gonna go back to Tenerife again, pls.make a time to see a Dragon trees - this is only chance for us to see it - with your eyes....😂😂😂
Muchas gracias por el video. Always fun to see Steve and Alicja on their adventures. Must have been a lucky charm for Tenerife football club.
Gracias! You both give off very positive vibes and I really am enjoying your vids. Safe travels and thanks for the content 😁
It is gratifying to know that many male football supporers look the same the world over. Great video as always. Thanks.
Another excellent Steve Marsh production. Stunning scenery, beautiful architecture, gorgeous weather and footie fans mingling and enjoying a match day without the slightest hint of trouble. Take care you two and I’ll look forward to catching you in the next video.
Your enthusiasm is so infectious. Thanks for taking us away with you. 😊
Great video Steve and Alicija enjoying some downtime but still finding time to share with us. What a beautiful Isle and city. So many people just lie on the beach and look at what they are missing out on. So many Spanish cities are so full of history folklore culture and architecture. Well done lads. By the way Steve Nice set of wheels you hired sheer class.
Thanks so much mate!
Steve this was great thanks for bringing us along!
It is always great fun when you and the lovely Alicya team up for a road trip. Fun and great high spirit as eve with lots of info and great scenery as a bonus. Well done you two.
Thanks
Thanks so much!!!
I loved every minute of this video. Fantastic tour of the city. Tenerife seems like an ideal destination for a mid-winter getaway. What a beautiful town. I enjoyed the football match too! One more video from your holiday? 🤞
Cheers, and ATB!
Another fantastic video as always makes my Saturday thanks to you both

Love your videos on a Saturday. Usually watch with a morning coffee but today I held off till I'd finished my Saturday chores and enjoying now with my feet up.
Honestly that was so good! Thanks again you two🎉🎉🎉
Hi Steve, have a great time on Tenerife. You were good at guessing the islands too. Your island, La Frontera, is actually the beautiful island of El Hiero. Best wishes from Fuerteventura! P.S.: Nice car for a budget holiday indeed 🤣!

I loved the video. So happy when there are new ones.
it's always lovely to see you two having fun
Loved the market and the stadium. Thank you for the tour. You make it easy to think that we are right there with you having a wander around exploring new places.
Really enjoyed that. Thanks.
I think you need to go to more Tenerife matches 🏴
I love traveling to different football grounds. I've not been to too many in Spain, but that did look very impressive, especially when you consider that the home side are struggling this season.
That was fun! The game was like a big party, thanks for sharing with us! ❤
Thanks for taking us to the ol' ball game, Steve!!
That complex car park reminded me of one I had to negotiate in Arnhem, shivers, a car park too far.
We were in the north of the island recently, because of travel disruptions. We certainly will be going back in the near future. Lovely part of the island. It’s very lush green, because of the different climate. Great content Steve & Alicia 🏴👍
This is so funny, we know Aida. Our last vacation was in Hamburg, and that's the home port for Aida. It was quite great to watch her saling into port. Thank you for the great video.
Great video Steve, what a nice place in Tenerife to visit. So good you managed to get tickets for the football, a good experience in a warmer climate, not like Scotland!!!!!!!!
Fantastic day out! I had no idea that such large cities would exist on relatively small islands. It is so clean. Thanks for taking us along.
Santa Cruz and Las Palmas are both big vibrant Spanish cities. Well worth a visit.
Great time!! Wonderful video ♥️✌️🕊
Thoroughly enjoyed the trip!! Many thanks. See you soon.
I didn't even know there was such a place as Tenerife! And the football game was awesome! I love that I can see new places and experiences through your channel. Well done.
El Auditorio. What a spectacular building and Santa Cruz de Tenerife is tremendous. Fantastic sculpture too.
I spent many holidays in Puerto de la Cruz in the past and loved to visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is one of my favourite cities. I always chickened out of driving into the city as the bus was so convenient.
Another delightful day out. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for the video. Beautiful looking country, may visit one day. Can’t believe how well behaved the football fans were, how wonderful an experience that is for children supporters. Look like you throughly enjoyed the game also. You seem surprised at well everyone’s behaviour was. If only it was like that here at home in Scotland/uk 🏴
I agree!!!
Nice one Steve and Alicija.
Great video as always Steve! Enjoyed the footie game also!
Good one, watching you for ages first vid I have commented on...keep up the good work...

Enjoyed this video with my husband who is a big soccer fan, we were at the 2000 and 2004 Euro championship's ( we are Dutch/Canadians ),so we loved that you gave us some of that atmosphere 🎉
I have been there for three weeks one month ago. Staying in a small hotel just behind the market. I didn't drive this time but got me week passes for the buses and went arount the whole island on public buses. Great time.
The building you described as Lego at 21:00 ist the university library. I went there sometimes for breakfast - delicious and cheap. And with sitting indoors, great, when the wind is too cold.
