Lots of old timers in the Deep South call crappie 'white perch'. I'd bet money the guy on the bank was crappie fishing. The rain didn't miss us in S. Alabama...rivers are WAY out of their banks, right now! Stay safe!

Hey John....nice to see you in my area doing some shoalie fishing. Fished there a few times and last year caught a 5 lb bowfin in that same oxbow. That's what we call those arms that go off the main river....oxbow. Just downstream there are a few more. I catch most of my shoalies on the main river but this time a year you can catch them in slack water where there are no shoals or rocks. I'm slamming this year too. If you want an Altamaha Bass just pm me. I have place I caught some nice ones last year.

Those shoal bass look pretty neat. As for "white perch" vs white bass - those were definitely white bass. There is a related species called white perch, that is common to the eastern seaboard, but only as far south as South Carolina - apparently they aren't found in waters draining to the Gulf. I'm wondering if those Georgians using the term "white perch" mean crappie - that's the regional name for them in Mississippi and north Louisiana. In south Louisiana they're called "sac-a-lait", literally "bag of milk" in French....too many regional names for fish.

@@bulldog7196 I have heard of them, but I've never caught one; I think they're pretty much limited to the Flint, and perhaps the Chattahoochee - there are some really neat, isolated species of bass.

I grew up near the the Flint River, on the Kinchafoonee Creek a tributary in Southwest Georgia. There are some incredibly beautiful stretches of the river that are also great places to fish for Shoalies. I’d recommend a trip to Sprewell Bluff Park in Upson County near Thomaston and just below Lake Blackshear at Warwick Dam. The only other river systems in Georgia with Shoal Bass are the Chattahoochee and Ocmulgee. The new state record was just caught on the Chattahoochee just below Columbus, Georgia.

Yes, only one of the stripes extends out to the tail on a white bass. Wherr it gets somewhat more difficult is when a striped bass mixes with white bass and you have a hybrid. Dorsal fin separation is another key indicator of white bass.

Here in NW Ohio we have both White Bass and White Perch
The White Perch sort of look like a White Bass
BUT they are missing the black lines on most of the body
Also they have a lavender hue to some areas on them
White Bass seem to only feed on minnows
But the White Perch will also feed on worms
So in the spring a good number of people will target the white perch as they are easy to catch

Amazing , Just found this channel, and had a big laugh, cause you come down from Tennessee to fish for shoal bass, and I live 30 minutes from the Flint river, But we always head to Winchester Tennessee to fish for smallmouth bass, crazy what we do just to catch little brown fish, anyway was that the Ga, Hwy 96 bridge ramp where you put in near Reynolds Ga ???

My research says that white perch is related to white bass and striped bass, and is a type of bass.
