The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has revealed the staggering beauty of the American west for nearly a 140 years. What intrigues you the most about the stories shared here?
With good friends in Chama, NM, I had the privilege of riding on the Cumbres & Toltec railroad. The old west still lives in America.
I'm intrigued by the storytelling.
I love this narrow guage RR. Hope to see it in person some day
Just to see the land and hear the sound of the steam locomotive was amazing to me in this video and to see the old tradition carried on.
National Geographic I had the privilege to ride this line. Just the feel of the atmosphere you get from this line is incredible. Longing to go back. A true slice of the Old West.
Just got back two days ago from there. I was told how fantastic it was, but as with most things, we never believe it until we see it. It was FAR MORE beautiful than I was told!!! TAKE THIS TRIP!!!
You too can drive a rail car on this railroad. We run excursions twice a year with our own Fairmont rail cars for three days on this railroad, following three days on the Durango Silverton. It's a great hobby, you will need to buy a narrow gauge car, join the organization (NARCOA) and learn the rules but it's totally doable. Thanks to the Cumbres Toltec Railroad!

My Grandpa fired the UPP 844, and his dad, and my other great grandpa were all railroaders. I have tons of respect for these guys. To me as a kid, an engineer was cooler than a cowboy.
My only complaint is that it's too short! So much beauty to share and such a fantastic train to ride. I've ridden it over 15 times and I can hardly wait until my next trip.

If youtube existed when you were child I'm pretty sure you would have to still be a child.
I fell in love with the life of western America, when i was watching the movie A River Runs Through It. and this video gives the same feeling, it's fantastic.
My only issue with this is that I didn't hear the names Conejos or Antonito spoken once, and honestly it's kind of hard to have a serious discussion about the Cumbres & Toltec without at least mentioning the PLACE in which the railroad is. Still, I dig this video overall.
We rode this railroad last summer, 2018. It was absolutely worth it. I'm impressed to see the dedication that goes into preserving the railroad.

I've taken many fan trips on various railroads over the past 20+ years. By a wide margin my favorite journey was two days on the Cumbres and Toltec traveling between Chama NM and Antonito CO in the Fall of 2002.
I have not seen a better film on American Railroads. I rode on the Cumbers and Toltec in summer of 2018, the all time best railroad excursion I have ever been on. Period, End of Sentence.
At 2:18, when the firebox doors are opened, just shows how alive steam locomotives are. Its like the locomotive is taking a big breath. Absolutely beautiful.
Another cool fact is that they almost have personalities. Some days they’re real smooth and the runs nice and others they’ll really give crews hard days. All the engines are always different every day ❤️

I still remember the big excavator operator that asked if i wanted to get in the bucket and ride down into the hole. I was 5.
I still remember the day the conductor of the local commuter train invited me into the cab of the control car and ride along.
Ive grown up around trains my whole life....ive applied for 3 railroads and ive got rejected everytime. My dad finally got on with BNSF and he told me to keep trying and trying. My dream is to be at the controls of my own train one day. Im 21 i still have a lot of time
Try railroads in different states. If you can’t get on the old types of locomotives, don’t matter as you will fulfill your god given passion!

Not mentioned here is the US Railroad system proved Social Security is better privatized than as a government program. When FDR created SS the Railroad companies declined it, choosing instead to provide its employees with their own private SS resulting in them receiving double the monthly amount at retirement.

It's good to see that people still care for a 140 year old RR line, but it's sad to see that in some places people don't care or contribute to their local railroad museum or tourist RR that runs historic equipment.

What's the camcorder used
Brings me back to childhood, putting shiny pennies on the train tracks behind my house. We’d collect flattened pieces of copper after the daily train passed. We were so innocent.
I used to put down strips of nail gun cartridges on the rails. Actually, I still do that. Right in front of the bar where yokels are always hanging around outside.

Its amazing that americans never stop and think or realize America is the name of a foreign guy . And most of the states are actual words in spanish.. like Colorado , Florida , Montana , California , San diego , etc look them up. Americans hate hispanics but they are the descendants of the Native tribes and those spanish conquistadores.

Steam engines are alive. You cant explain how they are alive but when you are around them you then understand how.

Not all but a lot of them where. The most recent to my knowledge was a million ways to die in the west.
Yes. It’s the only remaining 100% coal run train left in the US. That authenticity is what the filmmakers want.
@@SilverAlaunt a large number of 100% coal engines still run throughout the U.S. just in eastern Tennessee, the Tennessee valley rail museum has a few running standarg guage, aswell as Dollywood and Tweetsie railroad operating 2 each on narrow 3ft' guage
zachattak2 let me correct myself here. It’s the only remaining 100% coal run *narrow gage* railroad.
Alaunt You are forgetting the Durango and Silverton too. A lot of westerns were filmed on the D&S, the C&TS, and the Nevada Northern Ry in Ely Nevada. All three are coal fired, with two being 3 foot gauge.

Not sure the train ever ran into telluride every 15 minutes. I grew up just west if there and don’t remember that at all
C&TS: Preserving the railroad exactly like it has been for decades. Also C&TS: Let's convert to oil burners.
When you photograph steam locomotives you need to look more at the valve gear that's what makes steam locomotive special is that you can see how it works on the outside those engines are especially special cuz they're basically standard gauge engines on Narrow Gauge track they're called a k frame engine those are k-25 building 1925 if you're going to do a rail fan video throw the railfan of bone video the valve gear and give us the specs thank you peace out have a great day
