That custom hose fitting reminds me of the Pex tubing system used in homes . I got to say i was an old school solder & copper pipe guy until i used Pex ....i'm a believer now !!
Same boat here. When I saw Ivan with those band clamps I told my wife(yeah, she watches too) the pex clamp tool would work on those. Pex is great stuff, I’ll never look at copper or pvc again. 👍👍🇺🇸
When we were having trouble with our boiler we called our heating oil service guy. He determined that we needed a new pop off valve. "You need to call a plumber. It has to be soldered and I don't solder" he told us. The drain pipe was soldered to a threaded fitting. All you had to do was unscrew the pipe and then the valve. I called my friend who is a master plumber and all around mad genius. He actually built his own electric car. He loves the Pex tubing system and is also a big fan of what he calls a "Pro Press". No soldering required. He has taken over servicing our boiler as well. Every time our oil man serviced it, it would start, shut off and restart with a "BOOM". My friend was here doing other work when the oil man came to top off the tank. I asked if he introduced the oil guy to the Pro Press so he didn't have to worry about soldering any more. 🤣🤣
I'm old fashioned and prefer to solder. Propress has it's advantages though. I do maintenance at an aging medical facility that frequently develops leaks in the plumbing. We have the propress tool and I will defer to it when I have a leak in the main supply of the nursing units. It's convenient because I don't have to wait for the water to drain out or stuff the line full of bread so that I can solder. The fittings are expensive too-several times over the price of a solder fitting. A huge disadvantage of propress is if you mess up, you have to chop out the fitting and rework everything. If you mess up with soldering all you have to do is heat it back up and pull it apart.
@@mlieser1230the pro press crimper tool is several thousand dollars and enables use of copper instead of PVC PEX. They do have pro press fittings for gas but it's not intended for the super high pressures required for AC.
The ac machine is very nice. Glad that you have space in your garage for it. That's usually the problem with specialty tools. It's not just the cost but having the space to store it as you don't want to leave those things outside due to the shortened longevity of the machine.
That machine will make all the difference when doing A/C work. Good fix with those aftermarket hose and clamps. Hope the customer's REAL happy now. Good one Ivan! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
That ac machine is a must. I got a 99 Robin air from a shop that closed in 04. Sure it's big, bulky and heavy, but it works great and has made me alot of $. Great find! Also I love Ivan's line, "You expect it not to work, and then you're not let down when it doesn't ". 😂
Since the mounting bracket area has already been overstressed I reckon that that's a failure waiting to happen after a few weeks or months. Unbelieveable that the manufacturer/supplier would ship the unit like that. Always great to watch you work.
You would be surprised what those things can withstand, I sure was. Several years ago I had a direct meeting with a big buck going to work one morning with my little old 04 Tacoma. The radiator was remolded to the contours of the front of the engine and the condenser took the shape of a semi U on top of it. It was a couple months or more before I got all the parts rounded up and come to terms with the :;;(“ing insurance cons. Guess what happened when I cracked the first AC fitting loose. Full pressure right in the face/ eyes. I couldn’t believe it, but I had no choice. The rest of the day was a bit blurry. 💥👁️👁️😳
It was probably damaged in transit. Delivery drivers and shipping companies these days have zero respect for people's packages. I got into an argument with a UPS driver that was delivering where I work when I observed him pulling packages off the shelf and throwing them to the rear of his truck. Another driver was delivering a compressor to me laying down on its side. There were bright orange stickers on the box that said "this end up".
This was starting to get personal, Ivan. I am wanting to say on the 'ol Marquis, the first year of R134a was 1994. I had received some training on conversion before I got out of the business and one of the first things instructors taught me was using those 1 pound cans was very inaccurate. Congrats on the new refrigerant machine. I am wanting to say that some manufacturers have used the 1234yf refrigerant since 2013, so, you might need to look at a machine for that type of refrigerant as well. I must say, this customer must really want that A/C to work to spend that kind of money and time. It was in good hands; you stayed with it! I know you are always looking for ways to save. however, if you are working on cars or flying paramotors sometimes you must "pay to play." GREAT VIDEO!
AC machines are a must especially here in Florida. I also use a small portable Robinair unit to recover and recharge on mobile calls. It has stood up for many years.
Ivan, when pulling a vacuum on a system that was previously charged, the refrigerant is in suspension with the oil. When you started the vacuum process the system went down quickly to 28-29mm Hg, then started vacillating... That is the refrigerant boiling out of suspension in the oil. As you saw, it eventually settled down. Another tip: Get a bottle of Nylog Blue and use it to lubricate your O-Rings and fittings, helps prevent leaks. It's great stuff.
Congratulations on your recovery and recharge unit. A word of advice - invest in a refrigerant identifier/analyzer. There are a lot of blended refrigerants out there that claim to "super cool". It only takes one contaminated recover to ruin your entire cylinder of refrigerant. I have an old robinair dual R12/R134a recover/recycle/recharge machine from the 90s. I ruined half a drum of R12 by recovering a system that had been charged with propane. They are very expensive-about as much as the recovery unit, but invaluable to your tool collection. Now when you're done paying off all that, you'll need to get a 1234yf machine. Thanks to a lovely government that want to keep changing what refrigerants we use.
Hi Ivan, was wondering when you would invest in a professional AC machine as you clearly understand the systems and as you say, have to pay to play. Anyway, think you should have used the new toy to vacuum the system out also as you may have recovered more gas that way and would probably have also been a better suck job ha ha than your little vacuum pump. Nice work as always and happy to see that lovely old car getting the TLC it deserves. They don’t make them like that anymore, even the Germans I am sad to say.
Never underestimate the damage caused by shipping. I purchased a Craftsman Vise off EBay. The base was broken when it arrived. If they can break a vise they can break anything. 😂
Double congratulations, Ivan! First for finishing the Audi and second, for getting a proper A/C machine! It will allow for easier, faster and more accurate A/C jobs in the future. That condenser had some sort of a curse - only the second replacement worked, even if slightly damaged in transit (very inadequate packing).
You will never be rid of this car; it will be your crown of thorns. The good news is that you can build a new shop with a lift on the profits, as the owner stubbornly refuses to send that car to either an aspiring mechanic for free or another masochist.
There are A/C shops that do a lot of A/C jobs on the older vehicles, buses, big trucks etc. who have all of the tools to make custom hoses, connections and so forth. They tend to use the compression fitting, just like a factory crimp, as they have the dies and big crimp tool to do them. Once done, they truly look OEM, all routed correct, fastened with needed clamps etc. Few A/C shops have this option but the ones who mostly specialize in only A/C have.
Ivan, your patience and perseverance is respected! Outstanding! Congratulations on the AC machine! It's money maker! There's occasion I'll place fan in front of car to replicate headwind.
Yes, a lot of their work is or was gas welding and very good they were too, there were a lot more of those guys around when I was younger, 'cos more aircraft manufacturers.
Good to see a new shop tool purchase now and then. Especially the A/C service cart because they save so much time. I cannot imagine spending all of that time and money on this Audi to take it to a "track". For what? Ye old alternator sure is working on that battery/electrical system. Regarding parts being shipped these days...almost a guarantee to get damaged parts due too poor packing and the elephants who handle the packages. To wait 6 weeks for something rare and only to find the shipper ruined it would tick me off if it were a regular thing with my location/drivers etc. UPS is the worst in my experience regarding mishandling packages.
Great work Ivan when 134a came out we had to take a course on updating a r12 system. It was originally recommended to change all o rings in the system and a new dryer and oil. What nonsense, and shortly after it was common practice just to change the dryer and oil. And by the way wasn't it Audi that had a problem with run away cars that eventually initiated the mandatory brake pedal actuation the shift from park.
In the 80's yes it was Audi, but 20 years later it was Toyota. In both cases, it was user error and/or aftermarket or extra floor mats jambing the gas pedal open.
Ivan, Your patience never ceases to amzae me! I think we should start calling you Saint Ivan! Great video. I saw a thumbnail on your first video with Eric O and could not believe how much younger you looked! Time passes quickly. Thank youi again!
Man, few things are more infuriating than shipping damage! Also, hey, Grats on the AC Machine, Ivan! I was wondering when you would finally invest in one. Even if it is a niche machine, still gotta be better than screwing with those small cans of r134. Glad to hear there was a happy ending for this ol' Audi Red Rocket.
Talking about damage and shipping...years ago we got a new Kenmore freezer. I told my wife we will leave it wrapped in cardboard until we get it into the basement. Once in the basement, we unwrapped our brand new freezer with a nice dent in one corner. We were not the ones who damaged it.
I had the same expetience with those Al braze rods, they work fine just dont use them on radiator. Either TIG weld or just oldschool soldering works magic.

I have a Thinktool Platinum S10 Pro because of you, now I'm going to have to buy an AC charging station. I've been contemplating buying one, now it's just a matter of which one do I buy. Great video series.

I think I would have bought anything but an Audi AC condenser and had hoses made to match. It’s only a matter of time till that last beat up one fails.

good deal on that 2nd hand A/C machine...can tell it wasn't abused
Ivan, I like the way you handle your overheads. Being careful with your money is very wise. I respect that! 👌
Congratulations on the A/C machine.

Why didn't the seller put more of that bubbly foam in and remove the brackets to protect the condenser
What a job. Well done sir. I hope your Thanksgiving was a good one.
