Install SSD Solid State Drive In Roland VS1680, VS1880, VS1824, Boss BR1600

  • How to install a new solid state drive in your Boss BR1600, BR 1600CD and Roland VS1680, VS1880 or VS1824CD. This may work in other Boss and Roland devices but I have not tested it in those. A device I could not get it to work in is my Korg D1200 :( .
    The solid state drive I successfully tested and have been using for several months is the KingSpec PATA SSD purchased from Amazon but available on other sites as well. I was unable to get the VS series to recognize more than 8GB even when a larger drive was used. The BR1600 can use 64GB or larger, not sure what the maximum size limit is for that device. Also, I was able to use new SATA (not solid state though) drives in the BR1600 with a PATA to SATA converter purchased from Amazon. So far I've been unable to get a SATA drive of any type to work in a Roland VS multitrack recorder.
    Amazon 40 to 44 Pin Converter for use with Boss BR1600: "GODSHARK IDE to Desktop PC Adapter, 2.5 inch 44 Pin HDD Hard Disk Drive or SSD to 40 Pin 3.5 inch PATA Port Converter Card"
    Amazon 32 GB SSD: "32GB KingSpec 2.5-inch PATA/IDE SSD Solid State Disk (MLC Flash) SM2236 Controller"

    Ha! We used to put 1-2Gb laptop hard drives in our VS-840's 15 years ago - then figured out that SD or CF card readers were even better - but the VS-840 partitioned whatever you installed into as many 1Gb partitions as needed - but only the 1st partition was accessible since the VS-840 didn't have the ability to format/switch to the 2nd or higher partition. Still have my VS-840 flashed to EX with CF reader.

    Thank You Noel for this very useful guide! I have a later BR-1600 with an 80GB drive. As I understand it, this is basically a single hard drive which is partitioned into 2 x 40GB. When using the Boss you can select which drive you want to load (via Utility - HDD). I thought I would need a drive big enough to be allow for 2 40GB, so I have ordered a PATA SSD (128 GB). The next size down from that would be (64 GB). Then I read on the Roland site that the drive must be a maximum of 80 GB? My question is - will a 128GB drive work?

    • @noelsharp
      @noelsharp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very late answering this, my apologies. I’m not sure if the 128 can be utilized by these devices. Did you try the larger sizes?

    • @eternity8811

      Apparently drives larger than 80G will work but only 80G will be accessible by the br1600. 40G models have to have a firmware upgrade to get to 80G space, too.
      How did you go with the SSD? It's a good option if it's reliably functional.

  • @JimBerryKeyboards
    @JimBerryKeyboards 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay I followed the video about fitting a PATA SSD. I have the 80GB Boss BR-1600 so decided that I would need a 128GB drive as a 64GB would not be enough to create 2 x 40GB drive partitions. I also purchased a SATA converter exactly as described. I made sure to put a jumper on the second set of pins as per the advice. Powered on and nothing happened apart from the Boss logo screen (no hard disk activity light). Powered off again and moved the jumpers to position 1. This time the Boss booted up but reported a HDD error. I went into utilities and tried to format the HDD but it reported 'HDD Error.' I powered off again and removed the jumper altogether and tried booting up again - but no joy. So it didn't work unfortunately. It does say somewhere in the manual that you shouldn't use a disk larger than 80GB? So could be the reason? I really don't know.

      It won't work never trust anyone on TH-cam telling you for what ever reason
      i have lots of multitracks with ide harddrives and wouldn't even attempt to put
      new tech in these old machines they dont run windows 10 lol even my old XP computer cant run on a SSD. And it's not because the harddrive is 128gb because it would only recognize it as the maximum the firmware could accept on the machine it's simply not compatible. @@theprogrammerrolandmc3039 I did get it to work eventually, however you must purchase exactly the items as shown. The same brand and size of PATA SSD and the PATA converter. I have yet to get an SSD that works (I have tried a few different IDE to SSD converters. However, some have managed to get SSDs to work). When I put this PATA 64GB in the BOSS BR-1600 it allowed me to initialise and partition (Div x 2). This gave me 2 x 30 GB partitions. (I have the 80GB version of Boss).

      @@JimBerryKeyboards I have had the same problem but i have tascams and korg multitracks and the adapters dont have jumper connections like ide hard drives do so that will be a problem. Also i have read that even the pata ide SSD drives ''they are quite expensive'' vs sata SSD drives dont work either they will format and record but grable up the audio. SSD is a tottaly diffrent format that spinning harddrives in the way they take the information. Unless the manufacturers write new softwear for the machines it's kind of pointless trying SSD.
      For the amount of time a spinning disk gets used vs a computer it should last. My harddrives are not noisy so i was just curious to why people are trying to upgrade to SSD.

    Has anyone converted the BR1600 and used it extensively? Any performance issues afterwards? Though the BR1600 has HD size limits you can partition multiple drives on an HD, easily switchable. Anyone try the multiple drive partition with this SSD PATA conversion? I was thinking of converting to 256GB vs 64GB which would theoretically support multiple drive partitions. But we all know what `theoretical' means. So many questions! Thanks.
