This song is about a girl named Mene. Mene is unhappy with her average grades. When Mene sees her classmate Miya get perfect grades seemingly without trying, she thinks that this type of perfection is abnormal and tries to become more like her. Mene tries to act more like Miya and tries even harder to become "Abnormal", and gets to the point of envy where she falls in love Miya, realizing it during the dream sequence. But then Mene realizes that she'll never be with/like Miya. Mene finally snaps, and becomes a butterfly, a metaphor in the song for committing suicide. Her death is reflected earlier on in the PV where a vase of flowers is sitting on her desk, a common tradition in Japan when a student has passed away.

Based on the translation of the lyrics and diary entries, the final entry "I became a butterfly", means she's committed suicide. Each chorus when she envisions herself as a butterfly she's surrounded by either chairs or shoes, both are often associated with suicide. She also had a vase appear on her desk after napping, which is normally used to pay respect to the dead student that occupied that desk. So everytime she sees herself as a butterfly she's basically wishing to be dead, to be free and always dreaming, because that's the only way she can live up to her own "abnormal" expectations. She's always sleeping, the diary entries note her wanting to sleep constantly, so that she could be noticed and loved in her dreams by the classmate she's obsessed with. Its pretty sad and a representationof the stresses in Japanese culture to be perfect and exceptional.
It may seem like she's not caring about what others think, and that she eventually accepts herself, but she's actually desperate to be "abnormal" (perfect), so much so that she ends up accepting that being alive means she won't be ever be perfect (this is why she leaves the mirror dirty towards the end), and instead kills herself, to be an everlasting abnormal butterfly.

From what I've heard I believe Mene (our main character) commits suicide at the end knowing that no matter how hard she tries she will never be perfect and how abnormal perfection is and how rare it is to be perfect.

i don’t think that she was necessarily in love with the blonde girl- it was more of an exaggerated infatuation. she aimed to become the blonde girl so she can achieve what she believed to be perfection. if she truly loved the blonde girl, she wouldn’t have crushed on her for a selfish reason (i say selfish because the reason for her supposed crush was more self-serving than anything.)
I might want to add onto 1:59 . The reason there's a group of shoes around her is because in Japan, people usually take off their shoes before comitting suicide. Just thought I would share that with you all because it plays a important role in the video.

The diary entries basically tell the whole story of the song so I’ll explain it based on them.
I’ll be calling the purple haired girl Tame and blonde girl Nanamiya as told by the cast in the beginning. Tame is a below average student while Nanamiya is most likely at the top of their class.
Based off the the diary entries, Tame is displeased with herself for not being able to get good grades no matter how much she tries. The class begins to gossip about her which makes her feel numb.
Meanwhile, Nanamiya is praised by everyone because of how perfect she is. Tame didn’t see this perfection before but now she vies for it. She thinks that Nana is abnormal for being so perfect. This begins her infatuation with Nana. She is frustrated with the fact that Nana has something she lacks so she begins to imitate her.
Nana looks at her and smiles.
She tries to talk to Nana but is interrupted.
When she looks in the mirror it’s dirty and no amount of wiping will clear it. She has voices in her head that trouble her. Eventually she begins to think the pattern on the mirror is beautiful so she stops trying to clean it.
The next time she tries to talk to Nana she’s laughed at.
Tame begins to have weird dreams where she dances leading up to the one we see. When she sees Nana dancing with a stranger and their eyes meet, she wakes up suddenly. She keeps trying to have the dream again just so she can see Nanamiya look at her again.
Tame has now fallen in love with Nana. Most likely out of desperation. She wants to become a butterfly like Nana. She wants to be like Nana to the point of obsession. She feels disgusted with herself but she desperately wants Nana to acknowledge her.
The final entries are her telling her classmates to shut up and that she’s finally become the abnormality, the butterfly, she fell in love with.
By that, I mean she may have committed suicide as you can see a vase of flowers on the desk she was napping on.
Edit Extra detail:
If you were confused about what was going on at 00:54, they’re at a morning assembly and the person with long hair is receiving an award for high marks. Tame is imagining herself receiving the award instead.

a very nice interpretation of the diary! to connect to the diary more, i think Nanamiya was assigned the protagonist of the school festival play, and that then turns into Tame’s unconscious longing to be dancing on centre stage. At the end, she truly does become the protagonist, but she’s long gone off the deep end of sanity...

Somewhere on Pixiv I believe, someone made a comic detailing the story from the blonde girl perspective (I think her name was Nanamiya/Nana).
In the alternative story, Nana was interested in the main girl (Tame), because she didn’t care for anyone’s approval. She wished to to talk to Tame, but was often discouraged to do so. So she simply watched Tame from afar. She became enamored with Tame, became of how hard she worked despite not being affected by people’s opinions. On the days building up to Tame’s death, Nana noticed a shift in her mood, but decided not to act on it.
The day after Tame was announced dead, Nana brought in a flower for her desk.

This song... I can relate to so much. (excluding the suicidal thoughts and stuff) I was often told I was a gifted child when I was little, and I believed that. So whenever I wasn't good enough, my parents would shame me for being "average" and that I can never be a successful person without being different. So yes, I love this so much!

I got this award for "Persistent and Continuous Effort in Boys Health & PE".
I don't know how you did it, but this song is just perfect for a mental breakdown, you can really feel the distress in it, as if you just plucked out my emotions and turned it into a song. I genuinely cry whenever I try to sing along. I don't know what about this song hits so close to home, but thank you, this song has been helping me cope since it came out and I genuinely don't know what I would do if it was deleted from existence.

my theory is that the main character is sick of her basic boring life, getting average grades and so on, being jealous of the perfect life the blond girl had, good grades, a boyfriend and so on. She then starts to be willing to sacrifise her normal self to change herself into something more "perfect", wanting attention, you can see from some of the scenes that revealed her dairy entries. Plus, at the scene where she's sitting on her desk alone, it flashes and revealed a flower vase and in japan, when a student dies, they placed a white flower vase on their death to sort of "wish them peace". However, you can see that the flower she had wasn't white which shown that she still want attention even after death, and the amount of determination she had to even received attention and the amount of length she would to go to is terriflying...
She writes that she "fall in love" with that blonde girl in her diary. I think she is not only jealous but also obsessive.
