    I feel investors should be focusing on under-the-radar stocks, and considering the current rollercoaster nature of the stock market, Because 35% of my $270k portfolio comprises of plummeting stocks which were once revered and i don't know where to go here out of devastation.

      Safest approach i feel to tackle it is to diversify investments. By spreading investments across different asset classes, like bonds, real estate, and international stocks, they can reduce the impact of a market meltdown

      It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $275k to around $750k.

    I like investing in close-end funds that pay monthly dividends. The trick is to hold long term and reinvest the monthly dividends plus buy more shares on a monthly basis or when ever you can afford to. This can be easily done because close-end funds are bought and sold on the stock market just like regular stock. That’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between $50k to $70k in dividend income

    I have a three fund portfolio consisting of 33% S&P, 33% Total stock, and 33% international. I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me a nervous sad wreck. I don’t know if I should sell everything, sit and just wait but watching my portfolio dwindle away is such an eye -sore.

      There are many other interesting stocks in many industries that you might follow. You don't have to act on every forecast, so I'll suggest that you work with a financial advisor who can help you choose the best times to purchase and sell the shares or ETFs you want to acquire.

      I agree, that's the more reason I prefer my day to day investment decisions being guided by an advisor seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not out-perform, been using my advisor for over 2years+ and I've netted over 2.8million.

    Hey Joseph, liked the video. I do however think that the valuations are quite a bit rich, mainly for one reason. For most companies you are assuming 2-3% FCF yield, which is ~33 to 50 PE. Which from a historical perspective is quite high, to say the least. Most of them are amazing quality businesses, but still at some point, the growth will stagnate, at least for some if not many, what will be the reasoning for the market to give them such a high premium over the rest of the stocks? Thinking of a prime example as Intel, Cisco, Micron. Excluding some restructures in the business currently, last few years they have had multiple times over revenue and profit compared to 2000s, where valuations were sky high, but then reality came in and those valuations cannot be sustained over a longer period of time (except for very few stocks). How likely do you think it is that a few of your main companies go to a FCF yield of 4-6-7% ?

    • @vincentvaudelle7772
      @vincentvaudelle7772 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Valuation is one thing a lot of people miss, especially when it's about high-dividend paying companies, forgetting that high dividends are sometimes for supporting the stock price of under-performing companies. I have a good portion of my portfolio in dividend and growth stocks, and I've realized up to 20% over the last six months. It's yet about a strategic approach, rather than running after 'hot' stocks or high dividends.

    If you aren’t willing to sell Costco and go to cash (since you feel alternative companies are also fairly to over valued), then what is the point of doing this analysis?
    Every morning you look at your portfolio and decide not to sell a company, you are effectively making a decision to buy it at the current price and valuation.
    Tax implications are certainly something to consider, but if valuation truly matters, even taxes become moot at a certain level of overvaluation.

    • @JosephCarlsonShow
      @JosephCarlsonShow  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t believe that making the decision not to sell is the same as making the decision to buy. Most great investors have had a bit more leniency on sell criteria than they did buy criteria. The valuations help create an anchor point and if these companies do get egregiously high in valuation I will start to take gains.

    Hi Joseph, what are your thoughts on Bitcoin?

  • @Solar750
    @Solar750 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I always love these videos because you do a great job walking through your logical approach. Unfortunately, your logic doesn't apply to the market which drives stock prices. A stocks price is not a reflection of the companies performance, it is a reflection of how the company makes the market "feel". Yes, financial metrics influence the markets feelings, but so do many other non-financial statement inputs. There is no doubt a directional correlation, but there is not algorithmic alignment. When a stock doubles it's margins or CF, it doesn't double in price. At the same time, many double or collapse with inverted Financial statement activity (watch Telsa for a year, or nearly all of AMZN's history). I think your exercise is a good way to ensure that you are holding the right stocks for the right reason, but assigning price targets is just another name for timing the market, and your are going to find over the long term, you aren't that good.

    • @theWebWizrd
      @theWebWizrd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      He is not calculating a price target, he is calculating intrinsic value, ie fair value. A core concept of value investing is to estimate the fair value of a company, and only buy when the company is below fair value with a nice margin of safety. In the short term the price does not really follow the business fundamentals, but over long time horizonts nearly all stock prices follow the fundamentals of the business. In particular, unprofitable companies go bankrupt.

    • @Solar750
      @Solar750 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theWebWizrd Except he's backing into the "Value" of the company by correlating financial performance of the company to the market pricing history. This isn't "Valuing" the company, the financials already have a book value, or you could use multiples of profit, but he isn't. He using things like price to earnings (price being the issue). Or looking at cashflow improvements and assuming the current price is a reflection of current cashflow...its not. If the valuation method was actually pure, you could apply it to any company and get the same valuation, but you can't because the starting point is always the current or historical market price.

    • @theWebWizrd
      @theWebWizrd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Solar750 I'm not quite sure I understand what you don't like about the valuation method from your comment, but I'll try to explain the rationale.
      The book value of a company is a very bad indicator or business value. It does not reflect the value of the people there, their brand, or their ability to generate profits, just what they own. A consultancy firm can make a ton of money without much of anything on their books.
      Instead, a common way to evaluate a business is to look at all of their future profits (alternatively, future dividends, or future excess cash flows), discounted at some reasonable rate back to present day value, since money far into the future is worth less than it is today. That is what Joseph is trying to do.
      I agree with something I think you are pointing out, namely that the forecasts are very optimistic and the price does not reflect the present state of these businesses but rather some optimistic forecasts of growth into the future, and that there really is no way for anyone let alone Joseph to be certain of such a positive future so he should make much more conservative estimations.

    • @Solar750
      @Solar750 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theWebWizrdWe may unintentionally be talking past one another. A stocks price is not a reflection of the companies operational/profit value, full stop. Not today, not tomorrow. It is a reflection of the markets emotions about the company at that time, which may or may not be influenced by the current or future financial performance expectations. We lie to ourselves to feel better about it, but what you are buying when you buy a stock is not the profitability of that company (unless you are a mega investor owning a controlling share). You are buying a nominal voting right/ownership, which you are hoping to sell to someone else at a higher price in the future. You are not at any point promised a piece of the companies actual profits. Some companies choose to payout some profit in the form of dividends, but even then, its a nominal %. As such, pretending that the future operational finances are going to determine a future trading price is a demonstration of a lack of understanding of what you are buying in the first place. If the financial performance determined the future stock price, then we could easily develop the "Magic Algorithm" that translates financials into stock price. There is so much of a disconnect between the two, that you can't even really compare one company to another. You can only compare the same company to itself, and even that is highly unreliable over time. Stock price valuation is simply another form of timing the market. You are pretending to know at what operational state the market will feel a certain way about the company, and move to that price. It may be the best thing way we know, but it's highly, highly unreliable over time. The exercise is useful to make sure you know what you are buying, but you still need to buy good companies and simply hold them.
