Yacht Maintenance and preventative checks on your boat are key. If you're not careful, at some point your engines or generator will shut down due to an impeller failure and your boat will need repair. Sadly, impellers are not always top on the list for maintenance checks but they can make or break a day out on the water.
This video will walk you through the steps of identifying and changing out a warn impeller and also how to remove any missing impeller blades.
I hope this video helps someone who may be going through some of these issues!
Let me know what other videos you would like to see and I'd be happy to create more to help the group!
Stay tuned, plenty more videos to come!

Can you present any other essential maintenance work for the Onan generator? I come from Germany, here the Cummins Onan is used a lot, but there is almost no service partner here. How about changing the drive belt, oil and filter change or other essential service work. Thanks!

You can BOAT (Break Out Another Thousand), or do these easy jobs yourself. :-) Thanks for the video.

Many of these projects seem more tedious and intimidating than they really are, this is a perfect example. I’m glad I can add some info and value. Thank you for watching!

Impeller should be changed before they self destruct. PM 101.

This is very true and it’s exactly why our preventative maintenance program has been a big hit this year. Many vessel owners do not realize the frequency in which these should be changed. We check our client’s impellers monthly during our maintenance checks. This impeller was identified at the beginning of the season on a new client’s vessel. Thank you for watching and commenting!

What would ebe a good change out interval ? Operating Hours or Time ?

You’ll find a big range in answers here but I will error on the side of prevention rather than reaction. You will see 100 hours at times but that’s a hard number to pin down because say you don’t use your generator much and 100 hours takes you 3 seasons to hit, the blades will be bent and stuck in place if they don’t move often, and they will also begin to dry out. On the flip side, if they are used a lot, the blades will begin to wear. I would usually recommend annual replacement, especially with generator since it’s a very easy and inexpensive replacement. Generator impellers are smaller and thinner so more likely to fail before larger engine impellers.
We have a big focus on preventative maintenance. Our season is short enough, having a generator go down on a weekend when your friends and family planned to use the boat is the last thing you want to happen. Instead, a ~$45 part and 30 minutes of your time can save you all that hassle 💪🏼
