I travelled over the Micklehurst loop many times on the 5.00pm Liverpool Lime St to Newcastle. It went on through the now closed tunnel at Standedge, and then via the "Leeds New" line to Farnley Junction and Leeds City (South), and onwards via Harrogate and Ripon to Northallerton. The end of my journeys was Harrogate. It is sad to see all this destruction, particularly when there are constant complaints about "lack of capacity" on this route. Thank you for an interesting, if sad, film.

Thanks very much for uploading this fascinating video. I grew up in Stalybridge in the 1960's when much of this route was intact, and Heyrod power station was fully operational. Have walked through the two single track tunnels from Diggle to Marsden many times in the 1970's.

I did the diggle/marsden tunnel walk a few years back came out looking black as the ace of spades, but well worth it...

The power-station and the track from Stalybridge survived into the late '70s.

The Victorian architects certainly did a great job in building structures that were designed to last. ... They look as good today as they did over 100 years ago !!

14:13 that was part of the footings of a bridge, there's been quite a few removed up towards Micklehurst Railway Station, which had a wooden platform, so that's why there's nowt left!

Need to reopen the loop, and make it 4 track all the way from Stalybridge to Leeds! The upcoming line upgrade will no doubt have many missed opportunities. I've sat in the loop at Marsden many a time on freight just waiting! 4 track all the way would open up so many more pathing opportunities. I'm a railwayman of 47 years though and not a suit in a London rail office,so know nothing!!

Early 90s the old power station area use to be a great day out riding motorbikes use to get all ages riding round loved it as a teenager but the noise got to much for the locals which is understandable fun times though loved going in all the old buildings.

Fascinating stuff. I live close to 2 disused lines which other than surviving bridges and cuttings/ embankments require a pretty vivid imagination to imagine trains running along the line. Here you still have railway structures like the engine sheds still in situ. Brilliant.

I feel the same sorrow about destroyed viaduct that people feel about cutting down trees.

    Great video thank you
Does anyone know when the Southern portal of Brownhill tunnel was infilled? I can't help thinking that the whole area around it and leading up to it was changed dramatically when it was filled in..
Also - the bridleway that runs along the line - was this laid down soon after the railway or is it more a recent thing?

Would have been in the 70s, when they demolished the viaduct above Greenfield and filled in the cutting under the Royal George pub

and brownhill tunnel was filled over, in the mid 80`s
stalybridge station - the line bends to the right and then out off sight, around the corner, forks off to guide bridge, you actually showed where a now disused goods siding used to be, where tankers were parked whilst being filled with chemical.

Anyone got any idea where the other end of the tunnel in stalybridge thats walled off is? I’ve been up to the wall and didn’t fancy the climb

It is impressive how removed from history (in a way) things can be, I think (especially) viaducts shouldn't be knocked down
...sadly though the costs of keeping them up are not small.
100% they were built to last though, and built quickly. Whilst how the rail-builders in British history were treated is not talked about enough - because it wasn't something to be proud of - what was built was built so quickly.
HS2 might (MIGHT) be a good idea and it might create a good amount of jobs ...but speaking as a rail-fan (I suppose) how slow HS2 is being built?
That is the thing to be ashamed of.

Kristina Dooley head towards knowl street, find allisandro Ferraro dental practice and the bridge is behind this building. I didn’t scale the wall, it is very big, I went round and entered via the Stalybridge end of the tunnel and walked back on myself.....good luck!

This is one line that would need HS2 funding to rebuild/reopen, they made sure of that.
