I’m sure there’s more to tell about being a foreign actor in Korea. I don’t like that they focused on why Carson is mainly getting roles of russian girls. I don’t know... some AB videos are just really good and some are very disappointing...

Soyoko U. You can hear it too? Hahahahaha home girl is committed! I want to see her in a prominent roll in a korean drama! Playing more than just a russian prostitute.... like, I want her to be a main character!
She was raised in Korea from when she was young and did a lot of her schooling in Korean so it's nearly a native language for her. Hence why even her English sounds like it has a Korean accent.
I'm interested, what dramas has she been in? The only drama I can remember where I really liked the foreign actor was Michael Blunck, in Assorted Gems. I haven't seen him in anything since. I was really sad as I really wanted his character to end up with So Yi-hyun's character as their chemistry was really good. In fact, if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have been able to finish the drama.
This is a question that Asian Boss could go to the streets and ask the people of Korea, How do you like foreign actors in your movies, kdramas or TV shows. I'm surprised you haven't done this to expand on this video. I loved Mr. Sunshine because of the acting, story line and the many languages that were specifically spoken within the story plot.

Clicked on this video cause I saw Carson in it, so nice to see her in an asian boss video! And it was interesting to hear their points of view on acting in korea as a foreigner, it's not really something many people think off. Nice video and nice people~
I'm ridiculously excited when I'm watching a drama and see a foreign actor with more than a single, mumbled line or the "We are a group of foreign businesspeople. We will laugh and nod and smile while we're talked to until we're in the background. Then we will murmur amongst ourselves so we look like we're talking even though you'll hear no audio from us." I especially love when they have speaking lines in Korean. IDK why but the English lines always sound really unnatural and strained?
I've lived in Korea for 10 years and have known a few famous foreign actors in Korea and many trying to become popular. A lot of them are one-trick ponies, just fall into it, or just decide to try to make it in Korea for whatever reason but aren't really talented. Most give up after a few years. Due to visa issues, they CAN'T be exclusively performers and have to have a an actual paying job and visa sponsorship, making availability an issue. Many of the super serious and ambitious people I have known left to pursue their careers in their home countries after just a few years of dealing with the 'industry' here. Everything these actors said, I have heard from multiple other people. My husband asked if I wanted to try to get on TV here. I've been in a few things to help support some friends, but have zero desire after hearing and seeing how their life went, even the successful ones. I have been recognized a few times over the years but I don't think they actually recognized me, they more likely mistook me for another foreign personality that was popular.
Race is a factor in Korean society and the entertainment industry. I don't need to elaborate much on the greater context of this video because screening process to "'Foreign Actor In Korea'" are so transparent.
So as an inspiring. Actress myself in Korea (I’m Asian), I can tell you this- there is a difference between those who want to be actors ( who did go to school, studies it or is self studying) vs people who are “models” extra who are doing it for fun or extra cash or where scouted on the street. You will see a massive difference in delivery and depth of a character ( even if it’s a extra role,,there’s a reason why certain people stand out) . If we do compare say Hollywood vs Korea..in Korea a lot of people are scouted on the spot which is why the acting is beyond cringe. In Hollywood there is scouting but even for small parts the audition process is not easy. And those that are really successful, they weren’t scouted and really wanted to acting since they were born. So that passion and drive can really be seen in bringing characters to life, not you as a person reciting memorized lines. And which is why the best actors in the world disappear when they become that character. In short, real acting = it’s not about you, it’s about the story and you’re just a little piece to help tell it:) So I do hope people will be casted for skills and passion over looks. In kdrama there’s a lot of good looking korean actors but a lot of horrible acting ..horrible horrible acting too. So it isn’t fair to be so harsh to these two peeps in the video... So when I see the supporting small actors slowly start getting recognition(aka the character that we’re casted to be ugly etc)...it give hope that things are turning around-looks are still important but it’s slowly changing... for the better I hope:) And also would be nice to be able to buy food lol
popcorn pop unfortunately, looks is a large part of it. “Crazy rich Asian” the main character isn’t even an actor. And he did fine. He did a better job in my opinion than the lead female character who is an actor.

No offence, the lady speaks the truth. From my experienced I know that Korean in general looks only for handsome guys and beautiful girls, they don't care about your smartness, how much experiences you got and how much skillful your are. They don't care about the quality and skills that you have that can be very effective in job but their priority is only appearance. Maybe that's the reason why Korean has a lot of surgeries. This has to be stopped.
yeah thats why they are one of the technological advanced countries...because they prioritize good looks. Good looks = better engineers. Yeah sure they dont care about skills, thats why people dont study 10hrs a day and all the nerdy developers are just handsome idol oppas. right?
@@user-c3jdf9lylzse And you just showed you know zero about Korea or about living in Korea. This generation vs the last are TOTALLY different when it comes to looks. Appearance has always been important, but if you didn't have natural beauty before, you could supplement it with fashion, style, money, or intelligence. Getting a job in Korea is insanely competitive and beauty is very important. Getting your foot in the door is difficult. If your resume isn't outstanding, you rely on appearance. Multiple studies around the world have shown that pretty people get more benefits and promotions so it is definitely a factor. Promotions in Korea are often about networking and seniority rather than job performance. Now when it comes to dating and social status... Money and appearance reign supreme. Add in the availability and relative safety of plastic surgery, it is damn near an epidemic. Everything you mentioned are industries that do value intelligence and innovation (technology) but that is one small slice of the Korean pie.

I also find it ironic that Koreans seem to think that foreigners can't act like... have you seen kdramas? The acting in 99% of them is unbelievably bad, Korean actors included 😂😂😂
@Leopard Man oh I definitely think the movies generally are 100% better than the dramas! I usually love Korean movies for example 'The King' was an amazing movie imo with brilliant acting! I'm just referring to kdramas themselves not the movies 😊 that's not to say there are only bad dramas either but the vast majority I can't bare to watch bc of the bad acting lol
i find it funny that the actor guy is exactly the type of guy i usually see as the boyfriend of asian girls here in germany. every guy in my korean classes (and previously in my japanese classes) was this type of guy. also asian girls i know all have boyfriends who look like him, too.
Beauty standards in the industry is really high but there are actors like Song Gang Ho, Choi Min Sik, Lee Soon Jae(eldest actor in Korea who's still working and most of Korean knows him no matter their age). And there are actresses like Go Hyun Jung, Kim Sumi. These actors/and actresses are really famous and successful but most of them isn't good looking. Especially Kim Sumi and Lee Soon Jae is a living legend in Korea's movie industry. Most of Korean people knows them even if they're not interested in movies and dramas. I hope there will be more people like them in the Korea's movie industry in the future.
I hope they make more dramas like So not worth it and include foreign actors more, maybe as transfer students aka no whitewashing but realistic representation of foreigners in Korea. After So not worth it I became a fan of Carson and also the others merged into the Korean environment so well. Especially since nowadays a lot of foreigners move to South Korea.
@Jay Morales maybe bc she was the pretties , like she said being pretty is what it take to get the role , she fit good in her role it's just her lines was cringy ,
That's messed up how foreign actors in South Korea are not taken as seriously and put so much emphasis on superficial physical attributes. I agree with the message at the end. It's important to not get so hung up on failures. Everyone is going to fail over and over. The important thing is to persevere and keep going.
I don't agree ! He can say that because he is white and American ! That's how the industry works in Korea. I know it's unfair when he wouldn't get picked because others were more good looking, but many don't even make it to castings because they're different, so I don't see how trying harder will help them.
but in terms of casting people as actors who are not trained actors, its the same with "teachers". every foreigner can be english teacher without being trained as a teacher. so there is a problem with how foreigners are seen regarding their education in general!
Ugh, I ask when I go on interviews if they want a teacher or babysitter. They always say teacher, then get mad when I set basic rules and enforce them as a teacher NEEDS to do. Then they visit a month or two after I start and are shocked at how amazing my students are. Amazing what happens when you aren't a drill master but give expectations, help them teach those expectations, and watch them exceed. I have yet to receive any helpful "training" or teaching tips other than "give them candy" as well 🙄
This is so true. I am not saying this about Joey and Carson specifically, but the acting of foreigners in Korean TV shows is SO bad in general, that the word "cringeworthy" accurately describes it. It is really obvious the crew never cared about the actor's acting skills. They just wanted someone of the skin color, and foreigners got the chance because they are scarce in this homogenous society. Koreans with those "acting" skills would never have landed roles in TV. Joey and Carson seem passionate about what they do, and I wish the best
i'm watching when the camellia blooms rn and i'm pretty sure i recognised carson allen (the girl foreign actor) in there, im so happy she has some korean lines so far
idk why they want to be foreign actors/tress in the first place. seriously, netflix, iflix, all those american, british dramas are getting better every year. whilst korean showbiz is just about mukbang or boy/girlband.
Dude, it's your "comp card" and your IMDB page that is the go to in Hollywood. Carson is so refreshing on SNWI, although her pronunciations sometimes sounds like she's going to hock a loogie.
Asian countries tend to typecast white people based on their looks to play minor token Westerners roles. This is a definite, racial-centric trait of Asian cinema and mentality. No white dude or girl is going to ever be taken seriously as an actor in Asia, as they're just here to fill the role of a stereotypical European/American/Russian person. So professional acting isn't a requirement. This is going as far back as 80's Hong Kong cinema, where directors would scout for random "gweilos" in the streets to play laughable non-speaking roles in kung-fu/ninja B-movies. The day Asian directors will cast caucasians in major roles not solely for their ethnic origin but also for their skills, you'll see an increase in professionalism.

They should’ve at least done some research on who the actors are and what films they played in prior to doing this interview. The message of this video is not very clear and it someone gives off a bad image of foreign actors in Korea. Especially the part were Carson is being interviewed. I’m sure there’s more to tell about being a foreign actor in Korea. I don’t like that they focused on why Carson is mainly getting roles of russian girls. I don’t know... some AB videos are just really good and some are very disappointing...
Lisa Gardin i agree
11:39-11:42 "What one person might have going for them is just image..." pans to Carson. So the white actor is made to look hardworking. The white actress just relies on her looks?
so the whole video is bad because of some reaction?
As a korean. This guy seems very professional and actually put lot of efforts in it unlike other lazy foreigners out there.
DH CK he seems to be really passionate about acting. Aka not a model depending on image. Good for him.
@@npcimknot958 there's a foreigner model in Korea getting sooooooo much recognition. Instead this guy should get the spotlight. This is so unfair
it's not about being lazy it's just not worth it , in the end they will just get cast for their look not talents or efforts
fati summer with the negative mindship you have, i would not say a word.
But keep in mind that There are surely a lot of foreigners who are employed because of their abilities.
Majority of the whites are losers in Korea. Teaching English and using there WHITE PRIVILEGE
I have seen Carson in a previous video. She most definitely sounds like a Seoul girl.
Thank you Asian Boss for interviewing her!
She was raised in Korea and went to school in Korea
@@backtomimsey
You are correct. She mentioned this fact from that previous video.
It’s so interesting that Carson has a slight Korean accent when she speaks English (nothing wrong with that). I wonder how long she has been in Korea.
Libby's Variety I believe since high school but I’m not 100% sure
Yes I think she might have mentioned on her instagram that she was around 14?
She lived in korea since she was in highschool or a little bit before that and before she lived in Japan
She’s lived in Korea since middle school
She does? I honestly couldn't tell, haha. XD
Dang Carson’s korean was dope! Even the accent!
Carson's English accent even seems to be influenced by Korean.
@@lianet777 She is now main character in new Netflix drama So Not Worth It.
@@soyoltoi
Yeah it's because she has been living in Korea since she was 11 years old
Yeees carson!! I love her!
I see Carson, I click.
Say Soun on her instagram (@carsonallen), she made a permanent story with all her roles
I’m glad Carson is now casted in a Netflix series!
The fact that Carson doesn't like this vid says a lot about how the interview was conducted 😅
Why doesn't she like it tho? It isn't a bad interview?
@@loretxiki they didn't do their research on her apparently
Where or when did she say she doesn't like this? I'm sorry I don't get it.
Toon Mage Channel on her IG story
@@ostepopbarbie4414 oh okay.
Literally seen Carson everywhere , I wonder how she gets all these roles ? Cuz at first I knew her as Megan’s friend but then I see her cameos
It would be interesting if you interviewed Koreans asking them what would they think and how would they react if there was a non asian kpop idol. And also asking them if they know about the first nonasian kpop idol and lana.
Please if you agree with me like this comment so they can see that🙏🏽
Yessssssssss glad to see Carson on here!
interesting i used to watch carson on yt n saw her in a drama lol. i like the male actor in the dramas ive seen but yea i agree - its p. cringe
Cheers Joey and Carson! :)
i remember studying some media class in university, isn't people watching movies and dramas tend to visualize themselves as one of the casts?
when you look too different from your targeted viewer, it is nearly impossible to make an impact
Host sounds like someone presses a button of her and talk behind a speaker just like drive trus.
Yayyyy it’s Carson!!! ✨
Interesting to hear their stoties. Thank you for working!
yoo that's Carson from So Not Worth it glad she made it
Oh its Carson! I recognize her from Megan's videos
It's Carson! I remember watching her Vlogs and videos with Megan Bowen. It was great seeing Carson speak about acting in South Korea. Good Luck Carson in all your future endeavors.
I feel like it would be way harder for black american foreign actors to be casted
but the biggest foreign non asian celeb is black.
@peter hiew your racism is showing, the subject was South Korea and you strayed intentionally to nullify her opinion

Clicked on this video cause I saw Carson in it, so nice to see her in an asian boss video! And it was interesting to hear their points of view on acting in korea as a foreigner, it's not really something many people think off. Nice video and nice people~
omg i rlly remeber that girl. FROM REVENGE NOTE SEASON 1 . i just watched it and i remembered
I definitely love this channel the most
I'm ridiculously excited when I'm watching a drama and see a foreign actor with more than a single, mumbled line or the "We are a group of foreign businesspeople.
Here after so not worth it trailer!!! More diversity coming to Korea!!!!
I see Carson, I watch.
In short, real acting = it’s not about you, it’s about the story and you’re just a little piece to help tell it:)
So I do hope people will be casted for skills and passion over looks. In kdrama there’s a lot of good looking korean actors but a lot of horrible acting ..horrible horrible acting too. So it isn’t fair to be so harsh to these two peeps in the video...
So when I see the supporting small actors slowly start getting recognition(aka the character that we’re casted to be ugly etc)...it give hope that things are turning around-looks are still important but it’s slowly changing... for the better I hope:)
And also would be nice to be able to buy food lol
popcorn pop unfortunately, looks is a large part of it. “Crazy rich Asian” the main character isn’t even an actor. And he did fine. He did a better job in my opinion than the lead female character who is an actor.
5:41 its the girl from When the Camellia Blooms
Mina Blade she acted with ji Chang wook in k2 also
The question I have now is why Carson was not satisfied with this video🤔
Isn't she? Where did she say that?
Myria83 her Instagram story
Jaz Emily Oh I must’ve missed it. What’d she say?
@@alskarmode she posted "And the week just keep getting worse. Definitely the LAST time I ever do a TH-cam style interview about my career in Korea. A few years back BBC also contacted me to do an interview about my career in Korea and it was done very....untastefully...
In this case it's not as bad but I have definitely made up my mind I will not be doing anymore of them in the future. If you are going to do a video and interview someone about their career I suggest you actually do some research on them and know something about them before you interview them and publish a video about them."
k. eithlee I feel bad for her. She’s just trying to make a living doing something she loves and she has to deal with a bunch or sanctimonious ass holes on the internet trying to make her feel bad about it
No offence, the lady speaks the truth.
Everything you mentioned are industries that do value intelligence and innovation (technology) but that is one small slice of the Korean pie.
omg isnt Carson that lucky girl who got to kiss Ji Chang Wook in K2!! OMG i remember seeing her in so many dramas like kill me heal me, K2, legend of the blue sea!!
Carson!! She is a great actress
Foreigners need to learn to “act” and train like Korean actors. Lesson 1 - STAND AND STARE!
Τhey also have to forget their english....they have to speak them even more broken than koreans do....

I also find it ironic that Koreans seem to think that foreigners can't act like... have you seen kdramas? The acting in 99% of them is unbelievably bad, Korean actors included 😂😂😂
nope its intetional. they prefer over exaggerating instead of being too realistic like hollywood. seems like you need to do some research 😂
@@user-c3jdf9lylzse never said it wasn't intentional. That doesn't make it good acting though 🤷🏻♀️
@@smobworld oh I can relate 🤣😂
i find it funny that the actor guy is exactly the type of guy i usually see as the boyfriend of asian girls here in germany. every guy in my korean classes (and previously in my japanese classes) was this type of guy. also asian girls i know all have boyfriends who look like him, too.
Especially since nowadays a lot of foreigners move to South Korea.

wow he worked so hard and doing homework. Wish him all the best and may you hard works pay off.
Uh it's the same in America; Asian actors in general are always looked down and are only there for support role. How is this even a surprise.
OMG no wonder I recognize her she's in that new drama 'When The Camellia Blooms' I love the drama already
Who’s here before 1000 views??
but in terms of casting people as actors who are not trained actors, its the same with "teachers". every foreigner can be english teacher without being trained as a teacher.
so there is a problem with how foreigners are seen regarding their education in general!
I’m a black girl…i could already see the mistreatment that would happen if i would become an actor in Korea.

idk why they want to be foreign actors/tress in the first place. seriously, netflix, iflix, all those american, british dramas are getting better every year. whilst korean showbiz is just about mukbang or boy/girlband.
So you don't watch Korean TV? Just Korean TH-cam? You left out the gamers on yt

Dude, it's your "comp card" and your IMDB page that is the go to in Hollywood. Carson is so refreshing on SNWI, although her pronunciations sometimes sounds like she's going to hock a loogie.
I really enjoy Carson Allen's friendship and her videos with TH-camr, Megan Bowen (now Megan Moon). The two ladies are charming and wonderful.
He's in Space Sweepers! 😃
