St. Lucia’s Day is a holiday celebrated in Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. It IS celebrated in a few other countries as well.

IT is sometimes called Santa Lucia’s Day or Saint Lucy’s Day.

St. Lucia’s Day is ON December 13th.

In Scandinavian countries, St. Lucia’s Day is a festival OF lights.
AND
Candles bring light AND hope during the darkest time of year.
SO
SO very long ago, a girl named Lucia wore a wreath made of candles. Lucia used the candles to see in the dark. She helped people by candlelight.

On St. Lucia’s Day, A girl dresses like St. Lucia. St. Lucia wears A white gown, A red sash and A wreath made of candles.
SHE
SHE leads a line. Other children carry candles, too. The children sing songs and walk.
THE
Some boys wear hats. THE boys are called star boys.
AT
AT home, the oldest daughter dresses like Lucia. She carries a tray with coffee and treats.
AND
People eat special saffron buns AND ginger cookies.
IN
St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated IN different ways IN other countries. IN Italy, people eat a wheat berry dish called cuccia. IN places like Croatia and Hungary, people plant wheat.
TO
On St. Lucia’s Day, people remember TO be kind and TO make the world a better place.
