      That Girl yes.. that’s what assimilation is. She moved to America then stopped speaking to her mom in Norwegian and chose English over her own language. Normally if you keep speaking another language at home, and English at school and work you can be perfectly bilingual and no be assimilated.

    • @whatever5922
      @whatever5922 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      M A no... that’s not what assimilation is. It’s assimilating to culture but that doesn’t mean you have to forget your first language

    • @M4rteevee
      @M4rteevee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      cellophaneboy language is culture tho... so when you forget a language and adopt another one and speak that one instead, you’ve become assimilated. For example, Italian Americans who’ve lived in the US for a couple generations and that can’t speak Italian anymore are assimilated. They’re more American than Italian, they’re almost pretty much the same as the majority white English speaking Americans

      alana terrel mmm but it was broken Somali, maybe you’re right I’m not sure. But considering the fact that I was at school for the majority of the day (and at my babysitters after school) makes it hard for me to understand how you could lose a language you learned first. I always thought that when you learn a language at a very young age it’s more difficult to forget, especially if you have parents at home that are still speaking the language

    • @sensitivebabe
      @sensitivebabe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      purplefire5 stuff like this is also very situational and your environment heavily contributes to this. Kids can be very impressional (not every kid), especially if they are getting bullied by other kids for being different.
      I’m first gen Nigerian-American, so my situation is different than hers, but I still can relate. My parents 80 percent of the time spoke our native language at home, with our family, etc. When I was younger I used to be able to understand them perfectly, but not necessarily speak it well. However, because I grew up in a predominantly white town, I was always embarrassed about my culture and language and often did everything I could to be more “American”. Now that I’m an adult, I can’t speak my language at all and I barely understand it when my family speaks it. That’s something that I wish I did differently as a little kid.
      You kind of don’t realise these things as a kid most of the time until you get older.
