It just doesn't get any better than this. No one has the pitch, tone and inflection and phrasing of Maria. She is in a class by herself and this song is classic--the best version that will ever be sung.
Been a fan since "Midnight at the Oasis" right up to Tuba Skinny; she's sung in many genres and with an array of great musicians. Why the hell is she not in the Musicians Hall of Fame goddamn it?
I've loved her singing since "I'm a Woman" with Kweskin. I don't think I've heard Sebastian do this country blues style before (with a hint of N.O. jazz) and I really like it!
A knock out by Maria Muldaur. (Never heard of her; what cave have I been in?) What an interpretation. Who-eee, c'mon, Mama. Sebastian's tasty guitar licks are a generous bonus. Loved his Lovin' Spoonfuls. Thanks for this post.
Fabulous Maria! I'm convinced that "There's nuthin' you can't sing"...it's gotta' be a Gene Soul Thing! Woooohooo....now write that down, it rhymes - love how you bring our own gifts out. Yes, that's when you know that you have "connected"...Thank you.
Richland Woman Blues was on the B side of Midnight At The Oasis-incidentally. Maria first met her husband Geoff in the Jim Kweskin Jug Band originally.
I'm glad to discover this woman there is so much more to her than midnight at the oasis . The cd collection of her music is now growing fast. So much better than the stuff you here and see on the X factor
What you hear & see on the X Factor TV show is verging towards the progressive/AOR and is enough to make Saturday night TV viewers drowsier than before.
He has his guitar tuned a half step low, so it comes out as the key of B, though if you could see his left hand, it would appear that he's playing in C. The basic progression is F - C - G - C
@patrick9648 -- Im' not certain whether you IGNORED or whether you DID NOT KNOW the significance of Highway 61 in American music, especially for Delta blues and country blues.
i agree. lovely version. what cord progression is he playing here ? looked it up on a couple sites and they're in a different key. can't quite work it out.
Agree, I like the Jim Kweskin version a bit more. Think the sublime guitar playing might also be better in that version (not that there is anything wrong with John Sebastian compared with the rest of us).

This is 1 of my top 10 favorite albums. Her voice just makes you feel so good!
I saw Maria sing this many years ago at The Ash Grove in L.A.!! She was, and still is amazing!!
A totally unique and unmatched voice. This is her very best. An incredible gift.
Amazing singin' by Maria and pickin' by John!
No one in the world can sing this exquisitely.
Just wonderful. I love Mississippi John and this maria's song is also winner.

Loved this duo! Great after so many years to hear them play together!
God damn I love
Maria Muldaur.
Mississippi John Hurt too.

Saw her live in SF and Cotati years ago, great shows

this is the greatest thing I've ever heard
for the record this is just a song that Maria always dedicated to me when we were on the road.
*****
That of coarse was not the original."Mississippi" John Hurt.did it originally.
I love Maria!

My favorite was her version of "Any Old Time", for the same reasons.
Saw her live in VT many years ago, she opened for Stephen Stills. Love her.
This makes me really happy. I got nothin' else
Nice to hear her singing again.

how could 15 people not like this ??
too awesome - I heard this on KRVM this afternoon - came home and searched for it. ^^
Probably my favorite Maria tune. A sentimental favorite, anyway.
this is music !
"Red rooster says, "Cock-a-doodle-do" Richland woman says, "any dude will do". What a great line.
Excellent¡¡¡¡
très belle voix
merci
"Midnight On The Oasis" lady. Played fiddle and sang in the Kweskin jug band in the 60's.
Kinda knew that already.

I really dig her voice.

WOW MISS.MULDAUR SWEEEEEEEEET :)))
@bcxcheersx8 yes, I think it was Deirdre la Porte, on Stoneground's 'Family Album'. A gem. I've still got the vinyl disc but it's a bit knackered.
Nice arrangement. Original recording remake of the John Hurt song.
I didn't know it was Sebastian on guitar but it does fit.
why did i just now discover this absolutley amazing talanted women!!!!! This is so fuckin awesome!!!:-)
Why you sweet little thing - Pappa is a hurryin luuuve !!
@Willtypo Actually Annie Sampson sang it on the Family Album...cool album
My Chauffeur
I like all of her singing with the Kweskin Jug Band better than her later singing.

I like the Jim Kweskin Jug Band version a little better. Maria was on that pne too.
Richland, Mississippi?

Who's in THIS one???
The accompaniment on the Kweskin version was done by the great Bill Keith, using a muted banjo.
This is so sweet I got a toothache.
Anybody remember her ?
Oh yeah. Maria D'Amato before she linked with super-talented Kweskin Band member Geoff Muldaur (Y)
Yup!
Sweet!
"my turkey red bloomers...."
Comic relief as a mesmerizing contract clause.
Who played guitar on this?
Dunno but the boy sure can pick.
Don't you just love it - 'my turkey red bloomers" - ha ha ha & all
@snapperjohn1000 try going to u tube, member"i play banjo now" or the original by Mississippi John Hurt.
saiko-
A shot of good booze, got my like any day!
I believe the key is C. He may be capoed, but he's playing in a C position. It's too low for e.
