This scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it in my back yard one night. My first thought was that one of my neighbors was screaming, then I thought it was an owl or some type of nighthawk. Never would have guessed it was one of the foxes that live around our house.

Heard it years ago 30 minutes after the sun went down hunting, thought it was a bobcat til I found out it was a fox. Heard it again tonight a lot closer
I remember working a festival and the campsite wasn't ready so we had to camp in the woods. This was all I heard right next to my tent. Never forget that wake up call for sure!
I came hear because of a Mr. Nightmare story, where these bros were all hanging out, camping by a lake shore, where they all heard this sound 4 times, each one closer. They drove out leaving most of their stuff. Glad to know this was probably just the sound. I came looking for this sound, wanna know why it creeped me out so much? Because the person who sent the story to Mr. Nightmare described the sound as “A wild person with no language skills, being gutted alive.”. This video is very reassuring, as it was most likely just a fox.
So riddle me, if I'm walking my dog and I hear this really close, should I worry? I know foxes generally don't mess with people, but does a fox in season mean business? Would a fox run up to a human and attack the dog? What if it's a fox sized dog? I once dropped my headphones that were in my dog treat pouch and when I backtracked either a large fox or a coyote had them in its mouth (unfortunately I'm sure they smelled like kibble)... since then I've had a creature fear like nothing else
Hi, Check out the SaveAFox channel on TH-cam to give a closeup and fun view of red foxes. Certainly, not natural behavior, but it may make you less anxious about them. Foxes avoid humans if they can, unless they are lured by food of some kind (even bird seed can be attractive), but, even then, their response is to run away. They really aren't big enough to take on most adult house cats, let alone a fox-sized dog.. In contrast, cats, small dogs and even foxes have to be concerned about coyotes, although you don't have anything to worry about either and it is very unlikely that they would approach your dog if you are with him There appears to be no increased aggression toward non-foxes during mating season, although fox on fox spats are certainly possible and even more ear piercing. I hope you will be able to look forward to seeing foxes, etc. rather than worrying about them. There really isn't anything to worry about. We see them from near and far all year round. They are very pretty animals. Frankly, statistics show that we have more to worry about from our own dogs than from wild animals.
@@jeffreyshultz133 very accurate info Jeff. I’m an animal control officer and I concur fox aren’t dangerous. Coyote on the other hand will predate on dogs and cats but the biggest threat would be the neighbors dogs. I fill out four or five dog bite reports a day. I can’t remember the last time I investigated a human attacked by a wild animal. I’ve been on the job for twenty five years.

Very chilling sound. I can only imagine how it sounded to people long ago who didn't have the knowledge we have of these animals today. Great video

My mom and I heard this tonight we thought something was dying until our neighbor scared it off.
I thought something was dying too. Until I googled it and found it was a fox scream. Very strange, haunting sound...
