We have unlimited texting and calling even here in India. We even have unlimited internet also. Internet calling is better than voice calling so people use WhatsApp more here in India.

The popularity of WhatsApp is not due to the limitation of plans. Apart from English one could chat in more than 5-6 vernacular languages and do video calling and could forward the messages one received to others (thanks to misuse, it's now limited to max 5 forwards now). Compared with any other messenger apps WhatsApp is versatile. The business version of WhatsApp also quite popular in India.
Whatsapp is used cause, most Indian's don't use iPhones or iOS devices, so for them to communicate by Voice call and Video Calls, they use Whatsapp which is quite similar to Facetime... and the fact that it's free and only requires wifi or mobile data makes is easier as the unlimited sms and call was recently launched in India.
Discovering the fact that people in USA do not use whatsapp has made me feel such a relief in my heart coz everybody here is so addicted to whatsapp and I like texting way more than stupid whatsapp with profile pictures, status and god knows what all truck load of things in the future I hate whatsapp why can't we simply text to each other !!!!

People actually use whatsapp way more than any other social app. Also in the same fashion TikTok is gaining more popularity in the creative space.
