Obviously, brutality is something to be avoided, but it's a sport where the whole intent is to hit each other with metal sticks. It's gonna hurt sometimes, and that's just part of the game. Of course, I'm sure the fencer knows that and is just frustrated with the situation (understandable, looking at the score), but it's a really good response nonetheless.
I remember when I was starting out I faced one of our strongest guys and he whipped me across the shoulder and back, hit my back hand and bruised my shoulder, it felt “great” plus I had a sunburn on that shoulder from a hike the previous day
Oh man...right after the blade change I was sparring with a guy who broke his S2000 against me and then pulled his only remaining blade -- a PRE-S2000. He attacks my 4, I make the parry, bit the blade whips around and NAILS my left nipple....YEOWTCH!!!!!
Years ago, there was a bout between one of the Crompton brothers (Adam, I think?) and Mike Momtselidze (I'm not going to assume I spelled his name correctly). Adam was chasing Mike down the strip, barreling down. Mike tried to stop cut and Adam whacks him over the head. Adam's blade is bent ALONG the EDGE at 30 degrees or so. The blade literally wrapped around Mike's mask and I'm sure he felt it all along his spine. Adam got the touch, both went back to the on guard lines like nothing happened.
I fenced with both of these guys and even trained regularly with Mike at one point. Great fencers. Hitting hard happened and still happens. We always went home with our bodies covered in welts.

Patrice is the king of turning his back after getting a touch and getting wiped in the back. Also, Szabo has to be the ultimate switch.

I still tell the story about when you renewed your A at PCCs in Vegas, Eric. UGLIEST set of flicks to ever score a touch!
