  • This video walks you through the basics required to install the parts pack that comes with the URAL Constant Velocity (CV) driveshaft P/N: IMZ-8.1041-05057. This driveshaft is retrofittable to most 2WD URAL sidecar motorcycles. This video is for entertainment purposes ONLY and is not intended to be instructional. URAL Motorcycles recommends any service or repair be performed by an authorized URAL dealer or service center.

    "This video is for entertainment purposes ONLY and is not intended to be instructional"......this statement, unfortunately, is spot on. I am the owner of a 2019 GU and purchased the new CV shaft from Ural. After seeing this video I was convinced the switch would be straightforward. David had mentioned (in another video) that removal of the old shaft might be difficult, but it did not prove problematic. The big issue, which is NOT mentioned (in either video) is the process of reinstalling the new shaft into the sidecar hub. It is VERY tight and will not simply slip in. Rather, a tool (bought or fabricated) must be used to pull the shaft into the hub the last 1/2 inch or so. It is not possible to do this manually. I found this out the hard way. I enjoy these "how to" videos and the fact that Ural (Dave) take the time and effort to produce them. In this case, however, I think it would have been nice to arm viewers (potential buyers) with all the facts in order to make a more informed purchase decision. Rant done.

    Although this end we would need to see,
    What were more interested in seeing is a full “how to” video of doing the Sidecar side install, for us having to do this at home.!!
    While you all have these “lists of Dealers & service centers” around the country, state to state, what WE have found realistically is you can cut abut 3/4 of those out. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

    I'd be interested in seeing a CV shaft for the final drive to the rear wheel. 👍

      Same. Make a package with both improved shafts and an improvement to the donut (either permanent part or easier swap), and I'd wait in line for a set.

    Thanks David..I have a 2022 and my CV Driveshaft is on order for Australia. Time saved through less maintenance, reliability and smoother operation is invaluable. Many thanks..Just not looking forward to beating out the original drive from the sc hub.😆😆🙏🙏

    I've owned 2 harley's for twenty years and I never worked on them but a Ural is simple machine. I think I could do my own repairs on a Ural which I love the idea.

    Great enhancement to make a good rig even better. A great "How To" video would be Setting Sag/Shock Preload. The Owner's manual (2020) only states "as appropriate" (3-8). What is "appropriate"? Thank you for the great How to videos, and for considering this request! Cheers.

    Hey Dave, Love the videos. Need to change the subject. Think I have a clutch rod bearing that is dry and making noise. Had a service center look at it (Bombar;s Beemers) and he agreed. Makes a slight humming noise when idling in neutral. Goes away when you engage the clutch. Anyway to grease this bearing without pulling the final drive? Ready to pull the clutch arm but is hard to get to.

    Hey, maybe it's a stupid question. But could someone explain to me what the advantage would be to retrofit this new CV design driveshaft instead of my old 2020 sportsman 2WD driveshaft? Thanks in advance! :)

    • @davidwaynegeorge2292
      @davidwaynegeorge2292 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not a stupid question. First CV style joints are stronger than a cardan style u-joint, particularly if you are fond of off road riding with your URAL. Second is periodic maintenance, you don't have to grease the CV joint like a cardan u-joint. Simply check to see that the rubber boots are in tact and the clamps are tight and the grease packed within the boots is not getting out and dirt and/or moisture is not getting in. Third, the rotation vibration is reduced. This would be more evident in smooth riding conditions however a well maintained and serviced cardan u-joint driveshaft can provide years of reliable, smooth operation. If any of the above advantages meet a need for your riding style the CV driveshaft would be a excellent upgrade. If these advantages are lower priority for your riding style, wait to purchase the new CV style until your driveline needs rebuilding or replaced. Hope that helped and made sense.

      @@davidwaynegeorge2292 Thank you so much for the information David, now I understand it perfectly. I am indeed going to wait to rebuild or replace it. At the moment my mechanic mentioned that I can still ride around for a couple of years (15.000 km max) or it will need to be rebuild. Then instead of rebuilding, I could perfectly place this instead.
      I like to do offroading, but will use my Ural more in the future on my farm for my animals. I have 2 cows and one donkey that I would like to maintain (bring food, water, barn supplies,...) on my Ural. I will attach the towbar early spring. What do you think would be the maximum towing capacity? Thanks in advance!

      Hello James, should fit all selectable 2WD models back to 2003. Your sportsman I would have to double check. Some early imports may have been different. I’ll look and get back to you.

    So why aren't the CV driveshafts "pre-prepped" with these steps?

    • @davidwaynegeorge2292
      @davidwaynegeorge2292 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Matt, these come to our Redmond, WA. location direct from the supplier as a sub assembly instead of going to the Kazakhstan factory to be completed into a full assembly and then ship to us here in the US. We source the small items from other vendors and include the parts so nothing needs to be transferred from the old driveshaft. As we do not assemble anything at the Redmond warehouse more parts may come like this in the future as we find creative solutions to ensure the flow of parts isn’t interrupted given the logistical challenges URAL and other manufacturers are facing currently.

      @@davidwaynegeorge2292 Ok sir.... that makes total sense. Thx for answering. So I have watched your removal video so can I assume the new CV shaft is a simple bolt on (after pieces put on).... I have a 21 GU and even though it is 80% on road I would think the CV unit will still make on road vibrations less? Also interested in ordering the side car fender rack but it is out of stock. Is there a way of ordering both and then when the rack comes in they both ship. Being in Canada I would rather ship once. Cheers!

    • @davidwaynegeorge2292
      @davidwaynegeorge2292 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattdynes809 unfortunately there is no way at this time for us to backorder the sidecar fender rack and ship all the items at one time through our online shop. I do understand the value in ordering simultaneously for the savings on shipping, all I can advise is to enter your email in the "Notify me when this product is available" section in the parts detail and purchase both when they are back in stock. We are anticipating a better in stock position as we get a little further into 2023. We supply to the dealer level and retail both so the same logistics challenges I mentioned above have effected our stock levels on many of the cool items that everyone wants.
      As for the reduced vibration question, YES it will reduce rotational vibration and it is better felt on road anyway so it will be noticeable AT FIRST! I changed the driveshaft to the new style on one of the shop bikes. Was amazed at the difference, after some time riding with the new driveshaft I forgot how the old one felt and my appreciation for the reduced vibration of the new style became my new everyday normal LOL!
