I would like to say how much I appreciated your video and keep in mind I’m a 30 year ASE certified mechanic but no schooling or teaching can equal being clever like you were in this video. I love my work but am amazed everyday at things I still learn. That lower bolt idea is genius. I’ve fought with that bolt SOOOOO many times and just never thought of that. I appreciate your tip and love the mobile service idea. I look forward to seeing any other ideas and tips you have. I’ve worked 30 years for family at our gas station just south of Boston MA and am going out on my own now so every bit of help is precious. Thank you 👊
Couple tips - 1) remove 4 bolds from the AC compressor and move it aside, that way you don't have to fight with the lower bolt on the alternator. 2) When removing / installing, remove the 2 radiator clips so you can move the radiator back a little to give you more room to remove the alternator and nod damage radiator fins
I did it without using a shorter bolt. I snugged the top bolts on the bracket to hold it in place and put the Long bolt through.Took me five hours to do the job. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this tutorial!! Just did this a little while ago. Dealer wanted almost $1300 for alternator, labor, and recharging the ac. Did this in around 3hrs or so and saved the owner of the car tons of $. I would recommend just draining the coolant though. I made a mess when I disconnected the lower hose and coolant started running out the block.
Great help. I just did it today. You don’t need to take off the o2 censor. But if you have the tool, doesn’t hurt to take it off. Loosen the bolts for the front radiator so you can just move it a bit, so when you move the alternator, you won’t damage the fins. Also, helps to have a 2nd person help you put the new one in.
thank you! just did this crazy ass job and we def couldnt do it without keeping the AC in tact. wrenches, screwdrivers, and patience was all it took. I recommend getting somebody to help, and we pushed that long bolt out instead of using a magnet. Again thank you, i wouldnt have a car without this video. Took us about 5 hours but most of that was figuring it out, if i had to do it again i think we could do it in less than 3.
Just did this. Took about 3.5 hours with a healthy toolbox. Do yourself a favor and: 1. remove that silver bolt/washer contraption thingy (it's a mounting post for the engine cover) at 2:02. It's a 10mm hex. With that and a little tug on that plastic front crossbar, the alternator will come right out, and go in just as smoothly. 2. Drain the radiator. You're going to make a mess anyway pulling those hoses off, and you'll need to refill and burp. No way around it. Just save the hassle. 3. Removing the battery and PCM make taking the fan out easier. Pulled it up and to the right. Did take some wiggling/wrestling. 4. That bolt trick he mentioned is essential. You can also use a screwdriver or punch. 5. Removing the O2 sensor is not necessary. Mines was so seized it felt like it was gonna break. Just leave it alone, go around it. Good luck DIYers!
You figured it out like I would. I'm not taking off all that other stuff. I just need to move the stuff out the way and use something to hold it in place so I cam get to it, extensions, magnets, all that to put the bolts back. You are the man for this!
I changed the alternator removing it from the lower passenger wheel area. I simply lowered the compressor but did not disconnect it. its fun ,but you dont need to remove radiator fluid or any of that stuff. I dont know which method is better but both ways are fun !
Thank you for a very informative video! After watching this I knew this was above my pay grade so rather than spending a day or more trying to replace my alternator I broke down and took it to the dealer! I'm glad I saw your video because it made it clear this was a job I should not attempt. Sometimes video like this can help me decide whether to tackle a job on my own, or leave it to the pros. This is one I am glad I left to the pros!
2009 - 2014 Maxima's ("7th generation")...but really this should apply to all the Altimas/Quests/& Muranos that use the same 3.5L in the same date range, give or take a couple years.
This was the BEST video I used to change an alternator in my 2009 Nissan Maxima!!! Thank you for this video!!! I didnt have to remove the O2 Sensor but everything else was on point!!
That bolt is a pain. Good looking out man. I did the exact same thing with the shorter bolt to align the holes. Then I saw your video about using a magnet. I was gonna try that too and now seeing you did it to and it worked I’ll go for it. I don’t have a lift so it’s a little challenging. But I’ll get it.
I just did this repair. If you're not mechanically inclined, I wouldn't attempt it. I didn't have to remove O2 sensor, but definitely had to remove a ton of stuff just to squeeze it out of the opening. Luckily got long bolt first try. Good luck all my Nissan owners!
Hi I have a 2011 maxima and I broke my pigtail in the process. I forgot which wire goes where. I have a brown yellow and green wire. Please comment back if you remember. Thank you
Excellent video. It is a terrible job to do on the ground. I wouldn't recommend this replacement for a novice because there are a lot of areas to make mistakes. One is if the alternator slips and you didn't cover the radiator, you will be install a new one. You had very steady hands. Also be careful of the AC plug harness around the alternator. It can be annoying and you might damage it . It is better to unplug it so you don't have to work around it. Also use a short bolt to put in the belt side of the alternator hole to help hold it in place while you install the original from the backside.
ExcutedBuildz - Removing The AC Compressor On this car is a lot easier to remove unlike the Alternator all you have to do is. Remove all the compressor bolts, But removing the AC Compressor Lines will be a task. I use a 1/4 in. Swivel ratchet with a 10mm short socket it will be a tight fit. Once the bolts are loose you should be able to loosen both bolts by hand. The AC Compressor will come out with no problem thru the passenger side wheel weld. Also remove the belt tensioner and the 10mm bolt on the front of the engine that holds the oil cooler line. I’ll make a video on removing the AC Compressor soon. Thanks.... Hope this helps....
@@1stfixautoservice388 I couldn’t view the picture in drop box. I have green brown and yellow wires. Not sure if yours is too? But if so from top to bottom what color are they. Thank you
What we’re the symptoms for you to replace the alternator? I think mine is going out on my 2012. I keep having issues starting it and it seems my battery keeps draining too.
Seth Holley it ended up being the terminal clamps on my battery cables. They were in pretty bad shape. I cut them off and replaced them and that solved my issue. Thanks for the reply!
Someone has put 2 O2 spacers on the exhaust manifold....that is gonna make that car run like crap. Those spacers are for the downstream after cat O2 sensor not the upstream
I will never buy a maxima again. I should of stayed with Honda. I had nothing but electric problems front end problems...no more for me, gonna trade it
I ended up keeping my maxima. After it cost a little over 600 for a new starter then about a week ago my passenger door locked up and the door wouldn't open. Not 2 days after the passenger side went the driver side door went. So i said crap. I gotta take it to the dealer cause there was no way i was gonna get in my driver seat through the back doors. Well it cost 1025. Dollars at the Nissan dealer. So all the new parts i put on it and i do love how it drives and its fast. Im gonna keep it. Its my second favorite car i ever owned. My old 1996 Tbird SC is my all time favorite car. I wish ford would make that model.
A word of caution. Protect your radiator. I accidentally bumped the alternator up against it and it sprung a leak. Completely my fault, just be careful!
I am still debating on doing this myself or just paying a shop to change it out . . . your video is making me lean towards just paying a shop
Feeling the same way bro
Me too man

How did you manage to pull the alternator from the bottom. I lowered the ac compressor but I’m having a hard time to squeeze the alternator
Squeez the alternator out?

Tony Miller quick question if you don’t mind man what the the order of the 3 wires color that plug at the top of alternator pls
This vid helped me with a 2016. Got lucky & the long rear bolt lined up immediately
You can leave 02 sensor in I just did it without removing it. Was easy
I saw there is a white wire, brown, and yellow with black stripe...any idea which one is which on the terminal, or anywhere i can find this info?
I been looking for that also the new harness I bought has black, green and red

Wats u consider mechanically inclined in ur eyes?
I wonder if the 2009 works the same way. My friend's mechanic said he dropped the engine and charged $250.
Great video, well made! I always try and cover the radiator with some cardboard box or something...just in case.
Brilliant! Thank you for the tips!
How u do u unplug the alt? Im having a hard time getting to it
what would you charge for this job? How many labor hrs? One place told me the radiator had to be removed...
You the man thank you for taking me threw the install now it my turn
THANK YOU! This is exactly what I was looking for
I need step by step instructions for dummies

A new one from Napa auto parts
I have a 2015 Nissan Sentra and I have to replace the alternator. Does anyone have any idea how to do it?
Good job bro 💯

P.s put some tread lock because that bottom bolt will come and best to not have to do this twice
Great information!
If the alternator is sitting in place the plug is listed as :
C
S
L
I just have to figure out which wires are what
808tuglife The wires should be color coated.
Yes it’s color coated which is brown, yellow and green. I just don’t know which one is common, sense, and lamp

Same model but the generation makes it a complete different car
What we’re the symptoms for you to replace the alternator? I think mine is going out on my 2012. I keep having issues starting it and it seems my battery keeps draining too.

it's a 16mm bolt not 17 bro (on lower Alt. bolt)...or 5/8 if no 16mm on hand.
Thanks for sharing but I don't not trust myself to attempt this
Thank You for Sharing...
I've done several. Still a pain in the ass
