Paint It Black - Rolling Stones 8. Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel 9. Eight Miles High - The Byrds 10. Try a Little Tenderness - Otis Redding

This is an awesome comment section. I am genuinely impressed with all of these lists. Personally I don't think I could dedicate the time I would need to make these song lists to my satisfaction but I'm getting a kick checking out what other people come up with.
Yeah I think you are right....I'm luckily on hols as I teach otherwise my research time would be much less....I have shortened the process from this week ....will pick just 5 fave outstanding songs from 5 different albums and 5 from UK top 100....if I like less in the 100 I will sneak in another album song....oh and I won't have more than one song by each artist in top 10....but will in complete mentions list....need to cut the time down by half (from around 4 hours to 2) when back at work...but it's great. Like doing an intense refresher music course....no experience required....but it does help when they choose artists familiar with.....👍👋🎶🎧....also costly...my wife is complaining about the daily deliveries ☺️💸💸💸💸💸👀👀👀👀🗣️🗯️lol.
My Favorite Singles, of 1966: “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” - Nancy Sinatra “Last Train to Clarksville” - The Monkees “Homeward Bound” - Simon & Garfunkel “Good Vibrations” - The Beach Boys “Look Through My Window” - The Mamas and the Papas Album Picks + (some singles/previously or in the future will be released): “California Dreamin’” - The Mamas and the Papas “God Only Knows” - The Beach Boys “My Little Red Book” - Love “Doctor Robert” - The Beatles “My Baby Cried All Night Long” - Lee Hazlewood Worst single: “I’m Your Puppet” - James & Bobby Purify
Ah. Nice to see Dr. Robert there. Greatest short bridge in history? Opps. Chorus actually, the "well, well, well". Amazing.Forget they repeated it. I guess the doctor will see me now . .
The guilty undertaker sighs The lonesome organ grinder cries The silver saxophones say I should refuse you The cracked bells and washed-out horns Blow into my face with scorn But it's not that way I wasn't born to lose you Maybe my favourite opening verse from any song ever. Good on Kram for including it.
1966 was an excellent year for pop. Not only the best year so far in this series, but I probably consider it the deepest year of the 1960s in terms of great singles. All these are Hot 100 charting singles: 1. Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? - The Rolling Stones (#9). My favorite early Stones song, and one I think is maybe a bit underrated due to it being a non-album single. The bass and drums really shine on this, and the horns are awesome. I also dig Mick's dark, cryptic lyrics ("You take your choice at this time, the brave old world or the slide to the depths of decline.") 2. These Boots are Made for Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra (#1). Another great tune where the bass and horns are the star of the show. The grammatically questionable lyrics are also classic ("You keep lyin' when you ought to be truthin'"). 3. Solitary Man - Neil Diamond (#55). Easily one of the more underrated artists of the '60s. Forget Brian Wilson. If you want to hear some A+ songs with great vocal performances and immaculate production, Neil Diamond's Bang Records singles are where it's at. Every part on this sucker is perfect. Never has a trombone sounded so cool. 4. 7 And 7 Is - Love (#33). It's still crazy to me that this song came out and was a hit in 1966. It's a great proto-punk, garage psych-rock freak out. The best choppy tremolo guitar riff until the Smiths' "How Soon is Now?", and I love how it just shifts into the dreamy '50s-style guitar outro. 5. Sloop John B - The Beach Boys (#3). Not a band I'm that crazy about, but I think this really shows off Brian Wilson's best skillset - being an inventive arranger. Easily my favorite Beach Boys song, and probably the only one I'd say I love. I think it's probably the glockenspiel. Plus, since it's a cover, they don't have a chance to ruin it with bad lyrics. Five more from the usual suspects: 6. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Bob Dylan (#2) 7. Sunshine Superman - Donovan (#1) 8. Eight Miles High - The Byrds (#14) 9. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones (#1) 10. Paperback Writer - The Beatles (#1) Hardly any overlap with the listography crew. Kramzer had a couple of my top 10, Jason had one.
"Boots" was released as a single in December of '65 in the US, but didn't chart until January of '66. I probably wouldn't have thought to include "Hey Joe" in '66. It was released as a single in the U.K. in December of '66, but not until May of 1967 in the US. Joe must've been a British person in his past life, or he was just really excited to include a song with his name in the title.
Just remembered from albums lists you def liked your deep cuts....and you use that list you mentioned to navigate...never checked it out but glad to see I put a couple of your choices in my main pile for this year...i was amazed by the Nancy Sinatra song as i was expecting it to cheese me off... But much like Bang Bang....it's ace....👍
God Only Knows is also my favorite track of 1966 and of all time. It’s gained even a stronger emotional connection with me due to recent events. My best friend had a wedding in June. His sick mother flew out to see him and danced with him to that song. It brought tears to my eyes watching that moment captured in time. She sadly passed away the following month. He tells me he can’t listen to the song without breaking down now. It’s such a powerful piece of music.
Chart 1. Ain’t too proud to beg :( Temptations) 2..Paperback Writer ( Beatles) 3.Sun ain’t gonna shine anymore ( Walker Brothers) 4.Hey Joe : ( Jimi Hendrix Experience) 5. You’re gonna miss me : ( 13th Floor Elevators) Non-chart I’ll be your mirror ( Velvet Underground) Visions of Johanna :( Bob Dylan) Footprints :( Wayne Shorter) Don’t talk ( Put your head on my shoulder ) : ( Beach Boys) And your bird can sing ( Beatles ) Worst song : no milk today ( Herman’s hermits)
1. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys 2. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles 3. The Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel 4. Sloop John B - The Beach Boys 5. Sunday Afternoon - The Kinks
One of the greatest years ever: Top songs: "Paperback Writer / Rain" - the Beatles "Walk Away Renée" - The Left Banke "Bus Stop" - The Hollies "Eight Miles High" - the Byrds "Tomorrow Never Knows"...hell, pretty much everything on REVOLVER - the Beatles "I'm A Believer" - the Monkees "You Keep Me Hangin' On" - the Supremes Deeper tracks: "I Don't Think You Know Me" - the Monkees (w/Micky singing) "I've Got A Way of My Own" - the Hollies "I Saw Her Again" - the Mamas And the Papas "Ferris Wheel" - Donovan "Out of Time" - Rolling Stones "N.S.U." - Cream "This Is Where I Belong" - the Kinks "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" the Rest: "Just Like Me" - Paul Revere & the Raiders "Kicks" - Paul Revere & the Raiders "Psychotic Reaction" - the Count Five "Good Vibrations" - the Beach Boys "I Feel Free" - Cream "Don't Bring Me Down" - the Animals "Shapes of Things" / "You're A Better Man Than I" - the Yardbirds "19th Nervous Breakdown" - the Rolling Stones "Mother's Little Helper" - the Rolling Stones "Paint It Black" - the Rolling Stones "Beck's Bolero" - Jeff Beck "Just Like A Woman" - Bob Dylan "Visions of Johanna" - Bob Dylan "Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again" - Bob Dylan
@@oppothumbs1 Its the most ambitious and inventive pop song of all time, and made largely by one person, and by the greatest vocal group in all of music. When I finish listening to it I am speechless still. I feel like applauding. Its like something from another planet. Maybe try listening to the extended version from the Smile Sessions.
Though I'd agree that God Only Knows should be in your list (along with most on the channel) your list is nicely diverse....I am def with your implication by their absence on the blind overstatements about Pet Sounds by many.....it's in that area (like Steely Dans best) where the great sounds and perfect structures in fact makes repeat listening of the album a bit of a struggle. Not to detract from its undoubted 10/10 score I do switch off from it when listening. I don't with for example Surf's Up though🤘got a bit more earthiness and fun in that album....
My mini-tradition: JKJ choices are ineligible for my list: Hot 100: 01. Sunshine Superman - Donovan 02. Eight Miles High - The Byrds 03. I Saw Her Again - Mamas & Papas 04. Daydream - Lovin' Spoonful 05. Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks Wild Card: 06. Got to Get You Into My Life - The Beatles 07. I Am Waiting - The Rolling Stones 08. Sunday Morning - Velvet Underground 09. Orange Skies - Love 10. Suzanne - Judy Collins Basement Tapes (released decades later): 11. Hang On to Your Ego - The Beach Boys 12. Museum - Donovan (first and better 1966 version) 13. Stranger in a Strange Land - Blackburn & Snow (rumored to be written by David Crosby.) 14. Windy - Ruthann Friedman (written about a male friend, in David Crosby's basement.) 15. Waltz for Lumumba - The Spencer Davis Group (1966 release instrumental jam)
Beatles vs Stones. Never more apparent than in 1966. My initial list contained 5 Stones songs, 3 Beatles and 2 Donovan. After repeated plays, this is how it shakes out: Top 100 Charts: 1. Paint it Black - Rolling Stones 2. Sunshine Superman - Donovan 3. 19th Nervous Breakdown - Rolling Stones 4. Last Train to Clarksville - Monkees 5. These Boots are Made for Walkin' - Nancy Sinatra Wildcards 1. Tomorrow Never Knows - Beatles 2. Mother's Little Helper - Rolling Stones 3. Substitute - The Who 4. Season of the Witch - Donovan 5. Rainy Day Women #12 and 35 - Bob Dylan Song of the Year: Tomorrow Never Knows Paint it Black cheated a little. I could not separate the single from the incredible live performance the Stones did in the Steel Wheels tour. It was an unexpected highlight of the show for me, which forever elevated the song in my rankings.
1966 was Beatles vs Beach Boys. The Stones were never on that level. The Beach Boys made 14 masterpieces this year - all of which are better than the songs youve listed here - and youve selected none of them. And TNK as song of the year - really though? Its a scruffy, pretentious mess.
@@dj71162 This may come as a shock to you, but there are validly held opinions other than your own. I could have listed my top 50 songs and not a single Beach Boys song would have been included. I don't care for them. Never have, never will. I would rather listen to paint drying.
@@markgatica12 You havent proven any point because you never had one in the first place. You just started crying becuase I said you had bad taste and now are saying erratic insults towards me.
One of the greatest year when it comes to good songs/singles. Hello, I´m here again for the songs of the year. I only pick my top10, because I don´t know nothing about American Billboard Charts: 1. BEACH BOYS - Good Vibrations 2. STEVIE WONDER - Uptight 3. BEATLES - Paperback Writer 4. BEACH BOYS - Wouldn´t It Be Nice 5. BEACH BOYS - God Only Knows 6. SUPREMES - You Can´t Hurry Love 7. NANCY SINATRA - This Boots Are Made For Walking 8. BEATLES - Taxman 9. JIMI HENDRIX - Hey Joe 10. FRANK SINATRA - Strangers In The Night. Very good year. Greetings from Canary Islands
The Listography guys' suggestion 1965 may have been the best year for songs, completely blown out of the water for 1966... A fantastic year for songs overall, hits and otherwise (22 songs in my own top 1,000). I am just picking one song per artist just to spread it out. Still lots of great songs missed out. Hits: 5. River deep, mountain high - Ike and Tina Turner 4. Paint it black - The Rolling Stones 3. Bus Stop - The Hollies 2. Solitary man - Neil Diamond Wildcards: 5. Gimme some lovin' - The Spencer Davis Group 4. Good to me - Otis Redding 3. For no one - The Beatles (had several other great songs this year like Eleanor Rigby, Tomorrow never knows...) 2. It'll never happen again - Tim Hardin (could have picked several from his great debut album) 1. For Emily, whenever I may find her - Simon & Garfunkel (again could have picked several others) SOTY: God Only Knows (of course, one of my top 10 songs ever)
1. For Emily... - Simon and Garfunkel 2. Sunny Afternoon - Kinks 3. Paperback Writer / Rain - Beatles (sorry for cheating, but I had to include both) 4. Substitute - The Who 5. Black Waterside - Bert Jansch
Ridiculously good year! My top songs from 1966: 1. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows 2. Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna 3. Marlena Shaw - Let's Wade in The Water 4. The Beatles - For No One 5. The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning 6. Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) 7. James Carr - Pouring Some Water on a Drowning Man 8. The Rolling Stones - Out Of Times 9. The Who - Substitute 10. The Kinks - I'm Not Like Everybody Else I really really want to do an honorable mentions list, but even the cut for that list would be too much of a struggle anyway or it will be too long. :(
1. The Walkers Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gona Shine Anymore - 2. Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound Of Silence / Scarborough Fair - Canticle - 3. Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe - 4. The Beatles - Rain / Tomorrow Never Knows - 5. Ike & Tina Turner - River Deep, Mountain High - 6. The Beach Boys - God Only Knows / Good Vibrations - 7. The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love / My World Is Empty Without You Babe - 8. Neil Diamond - Solitary Man - 9. Fred Neil - Everybody's Talkin' - 10. The Kinks - Lazing On A Sunny Afternoon - 11. The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black / As Tears Go By - 12. The Easy Beats - Friday On My Mind - 13. Herman Hermits - No Milk Today - 14. Donovan - Sunshine Superman - 15. Manfred Mann - Pretty Flamingo - 16. Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin' - 17. The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City / Day-dream - 18. The Hollies - Bus - Stop - 19. The Byrds - Eight Miles High - 20. The Monkees - I'm A Believer / Last Train To Clarksville -
I could literally name at least 8 Beach Boys songs better than those from this year - Wouldn't It Be Nice, You Still Believe in Me, Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder), Sloop John B, God Only Knows, I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, Caroline No and Good Vibrations.
Depending on the day, any of these could be my #1 1) "Summer in the City" - Lovin Spoonful 2) "Good Vibrations" - Beach Boys 3) "Reach Out" - The 4 Tops 4) "That's Life" - Frank Sinatra 5) "Paint It Black" - Rolling Stones 6) "These Boots Were Made For Walkin" - Nancy Sinatra 7) "California Dreamin" - Mamas and Papas 8) "Keep Me Hangin On" - The Supremes 9) "Sound of Silence" - Simon & Garfunkel 10) "Wouldn't It Be Nice" - Beach Boys Worst Song - The Men in My Little Girl's Life - Mike Douglas
HM - Chris Farlowe - Under My Thumb (at least a hint at the Stones...), Temptations - (I Know) I'm Losing You, Johnny Rivers - Secret Agent Man, Eddie Floyd - Knock on Wood, Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City 5. Love - Seven and Seven Is (2:15 teeange frustration, no chorus, ending in an explosion, garage rock in a nutshell, covered by everybody who lived in that tradition - and even some that did not...) 4. Monkees - I'm a Believer (written by Neil Diamond, the best version of it was released in 1974 as a single by no other than Robert Wyatt - that version even entered the UK charts...) 3. Sam & Dave - Hold On I'm Coming (As a young girl I wondered if it meant what I thought it meant...anyway, written by Isaac Hayes, backed by Booker T & the MGs and horns from the Mar-Keys, this was Stax at its best.) 2. 13th Floor Elevators - You’re Gonna Miss Me (Roky Erickson's debut, weird but brilliant like everything he recorded, vocals inspired by Little Richard, an amplified jug and garage rock 'n roll, or in one word - psychedelic.) 1. James Brown - It's a Man's World (...but it wouldn't be nothing, nothing/Without a woman or a girl.)
So glad to see someone else with "7 And 7 Is" on their list. Such a great tune. Sam & Dave and the 13th Floor Elevators were on my shortlist but just missed.
@@edgustafson I am cheating (bending the rules...) as I skip all the Stones, Who, Dylan, Kinks that would dominate a top 20, no need for me to mention that I love and love them, and instead go to the other songs that meant and still mean a lot to me.
@@roxannewalsh I love the story about Top Of The Pops not wanting Wyatt to appear in his wheelchair, but eventually relenting. His Rock Bottom is a constant in my ever shifting top 20. I haven't made my list yet, but I will also be bending the rules for the same reasons as you. And I'll probably include 13th Floor Elevators and Love.
One can agree or disagree with individual picks of albums or songs in every video... but one thing is clear: ALL of you picking "God Only Knows" (including making it your favorite song of all-time for some of you), cements your place in history as: HAVING GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC. Thanks for doing this. Great as usual! ...and yeah: "Secret Agent Man" and "These Boots Are Made For Walking" are so amazing. I'd have to have "Good Vibrations," "Sloop John B," and "You Still Believe In Me" (Beach Boys) on the list... along with "Tomorrow Never Knows," (Beatles) and "A Poem On The Underground Wall" (Simon & Garfunkel)... Close: ""A Simple Desultory Philippic (or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission)" (Simon & Garfunkel), "Eight Miles High" (The Byrds), "Paint It Black" (Rolling Stones), 19th Nervous Breakdown (Rolling Stones), Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles), California Dreaming (Mamas and the Papas), "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (Beach Boys)

Tricky years for me as I’m not a big Beatles or Beach Boys fan. Don’t get me wrong, I get it, the love, admiration and respect that they garner from the music world, but, I was, I am and will always be a Stones nut. Great to see them make numerous appearances across this video and for me it’s going to be “Paint it Black”
From listening to the 1966 playlist, I can tell I'm maybe a little less into baroque pop than everybody was at this time, and very into what John Lennon was doing. My 5 favorites from the playlist: 1. The Beatles- Tomorrow Never Knows 2. Ike & Tina Turner- River Deep, Mountain High 3. The Beatles- Rain 4. The Mamas & the Papas- California Dreamin' 5. The Beatles- She Said She Said
10. Don't Look Away - The Who 9. I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles 8. Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones 7. Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks 6. Whiskey Man - The Who 5. Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stone 4. Wouldn't It Be Nice - The Beach Boys 3. Spoonful - Cream 2. For No One - The Beatles 1. Rosy Won't You Please Come Home - The Kinks
If I were including non-Hot 100 tracks, I would've included it. Probably my favorite Dylan song. Beautiful lyrics, and the song itself is just gorgeous. It's a must listen for people who only think Dylan is a "lyrics guy".
My favorite Dylan song and definitely my favorite song of this year, although I don’t know if Waterloo Sunset is ‘66 or ‘67 off hand. I think that might be the greatest song ever
I think from here until the early 70s is my favourite run for music. I'm counting like 100 songs at this point that I would want to give a shoutout to. We're just on the cusp of psychedelia now, and I quite like how it's just bubbling under the surface in a lot of the big songs around this time. Billboard Songs 1. *Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones #1* (The most innovative of their big songs, and among my personal favourites. Gateway song for me to 60s music.) 2. *Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys #1* (One of the most iconic progressive pop songs of all-time. In truth the modular style has never been my preference, but it's undeniable here.) 3. *Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles #11* (More brilliant songwriting from Paul, and the incredible strings!) 4. *I Want You by Bob Dylan (#20)* (Maybe the most poppy Dylan would ever get in his prime, and I love it!) 5. *Wouldn't It Be Nice by The Beach Boys #8* (Top class melody, vocals, production. The sunshine pop/coming-of age aspects really help bridge the gap between what preceded and the rest of Pet Sounds.) Wildcard Songs 1. *WINNER: God Only Knows by The Beach Boys (#39)* (The guys already have the praise on this covered. For me it's all about that swirling fade which could go for minutes longer and I wouldn't mind one bit.) 2. *Under My Thumb by The Rolling Stones* (Surely pushing up against that line with the lyrics, but I'm partial to take it as a character narrative. Cannot resist the marimba. One of their best album cuts.) 3. *Let's Go Away for Awhile by The Beach Boys* (A short journey, but you really get to take in all the beautiful details of the production on this Pet Sounds instrumental.) 4. *Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground & Nico* (A short twinkling lullaby. Eschews going as far down their experiment path while also sounding nothing quite like anything else at the time, which is right up my alley.) 5. *7 and 7 Is by Love (#33)* (Heavy, unrelenting, and just over two minutes! Garage psych with shades of punk and surf rock too.) WORST: The Ballad of the Green Berets by SSgt Barry Sadley #1 Plodding, lame, ridiculously uninteresting, and the biggest seller of the year. To think this held both the Beatles and Rolling Stones off the top spot. At least the Mike Douglas song, another one I considered, kind of sounds like it belongs in some kind of musical of the time. It could have been worse had Johnny Rebel's white supremacist singles charted.
@@painless465 It was released as a single in December '66 prior to the album, and never charted. Since '67 is already loaded with wildcards, figured it fits best here!
for me 1966 is yet another year of prime Nuggets goodness.. I think we've hit the motherlode here. I think my 11-20 might be stronger than my top 10 of just a couple of years before. As previously these all made the UK Top 50 this year: God Only Knows - The Beach Boys Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles It's a Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown* Eight Miles High - The Byrds Reach Out I'll be There - The 4 Tops California Dreaming - The Mamas and the Papas Paint it, Black - The Rolling Stones** When a Man Loves a Woman _ Percy Sledge River Deep Mountain High - Ike and Tina Turner * Proof that I'm prepared to overlook rather dated lyrical sentiments when the music is fantastic ** Proof that I'm prepared to overlook very bad grammar when the music is fantastic River Deep Mountain High may have only got to number 88 on the Hot 100 but it was number 3 in the UK and got to number 1 in Spain. Generalisimo Francisco Franco's thoughts on the latter are not on record but I know he is still dead.
66 is a big year for my development as a musician because of Freak Out! by the Mothers of Invention. it's also the beginning of my favorite period of the Who. interesting to hear Jason remark how he hates the psychedelic phase of pop music. this is a pretty rich year for psych groups that I still love today. 5. "Mother's Little Helper" - Rolling Stones (those twin 12-strings that sounded like sitar!) 4. "Who Are the Brain Police?" - Mothers of Invention (deeply disturbing, the way I like it!) 3. "Season of the Witch" - Donovan (great song! so many bands covered it in the 60s) 2. "7 and 7 Is" - Love (the energy level of that track is seismic!) 1. "Disguises" - The Who (I've learned to play this and "Happy Jack" on guitar because they're awesome songs) some of the psych groups I love debuted this year like 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Love...this was also the beginning of Jefferson Airplane, and an important psych single by the Byrds ("8 Miles High")

There was so much I ended up leaving off especially trying to stick to one song per artist but nothing wrong with having lots of great songs to listen to while making the list! Many on your lists were serious contenders that just missed ("Reach Out I'll Be There", "Paint It, Black", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" or really any song off Pet Sounds honestly, "California Dreaming"). Anyway, here's my list. Hot 100: - Love - 7 and 7 Is - The Byrds - Eight Miles High - Stevie Wonder - Uptight (Everything's Alright) - The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love Wildcard: -Otis Redding - Just One More Day - The Ugly Ducklings - Nothin' - The Beatles - For No One - The Rolling Stones - As Tears Go By - Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Comin' Worst: Gonna go with the obvious one too ("The Ballad of the Green Berets"), checked out a bunch of other crappy songs but nothing was as bad as that. My #1 is also "God Only Knows". What else is there to say?
My favourites of 1966: 01) God Only Knows - Beach Boys 02) Goin' Back - Dusty Springfield 03) Caroline No - Beach Boys 04) The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore - Walker Brothers 05) Sugar Town - Nancy Sinatra 06) Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - Beach Boys 07) What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - Jimmy Ruffin 08) Wouldn't It Be Nice - Beach Boys 09) That's Not Me - Beach Boys 10) California Dreamin' - The Mamas & The Papas

charted songs : The Mamas And The Papas - I Saw Her Again Gary Lewis & The Playboys - Where will the words come from The Four Seasons - Working my way back to you The Cyrkle - Please Don’t Ever Leave Me Frankie Valli - The Proud One wildcards : The Beach Boys - I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times (favorite song) Billy Vaughn - Things Go Better (with Coke) The Beatles - I’m Only Sleeping Herman’s Hermits - East West The Sunrays - A Little Dog And His Boy album by a ‘new’ act : The Association - And Then Along Comes… least favorite song : The New Vaudeville Band - Winchester Cathedral (for having won the Grammy award)
With all the great 1966 songs, a parody of the beginning of the 20th century, almost only instrumental, "winchester cathedral", was awarded by the Grammy jury committee !
One of the best years ever. The golden trilogy of albums came out this year with Blonde on Blonde, Revolver, and Pet Sounds and it’s just as good for singles, but as Jason said, those golden artists are too good to ignore. 1. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles 2. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys 3. I Want You - Bob Dylan 4. Here, There, and Everywhere - The Beatles 5. The Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel
Oh yes....I am hoping they do a Scott walker discography too...have nearly all his solo and collaborative albums....funnily none of his walker Bros stuff though I also rate some of those songs....🤘👍
@@threestringsomg Same here! I'm mostly into the Scott Walker solo stuff, both early, and recent, though I do really love the album Nite Flights by The Walker Brothers, because it ROCKS.
Am I boring? Maybe, but these are my honest Top 10 songs of 1966. Overall, probably the strongest year of the 60s. Charting songs: 5. The Beach Boys - Sloop John B 4. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations 3. The Beach Boys - Wouldn’t it be Nice 2. Brian Wilson - Caroline, No [Better than the album version, because it doesn’t feature the strange ending with the train.] Wildcards: 5. The Beach Boys - You Still Believe in Me [Listen to the vocals only version of this. Fantastic.] 4. The Beach Boys - Let’s go away for a while [Probably the last instrumental that will be on any of my SOTY lists. As I said before, imo the best instrumental song ever made.] 3. The Beach Boys - I’m Waiting for the Day 2. The Beach Boys - Here Today [I wonder if ‘Eye of the Tiger’ was inspired by this song’s bridge.] 1. The Beach Boys - I Just Wasn’t Made for these Times [Sometimes, I feel very sad as well.] SONG OF THE YEAR 1966: The Beach Boys - God Only Knows [Not my favorite song of all time, but long as there are stars above us…okay just kidding. Top 10 song of all time for me.] If you think I completely ignored other artists, here’s some songs that are also great from 1966, but didn’t make the cut: The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby [This song has a special feel to it.] The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows [Such a futuristic song. I love it.] The Beatles - Rain The Mothers of Invention - Motherly Love The Mothers of Invention - Wowie Zowie The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black The Who - Boris the Spider [Really strange song, but also really good.]
@@Sir_Eyeball not much evidence of it....there's loads of songs that are all timers in 67 not just the few obvious ones...66 I meant...and 67....,lol and 68....69.....70.....etc...Sheesh that's alot of digging to do...
As far as the Beach Boys - I love the Your Charting Songs but I dislike the Wildcards. I don't get those songs at all. I once read why they were great but I stopped reading and listened again and I continued to be right.
5. The Beatles - I'm Only Sleeping 4. Simon & Garfunkel - April, Come She Will 3. Bob Dylan - Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again 2. Bob Dylan - Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands 1. Bob Dylan - I Want You When your number one album of all time is in the year there's not gonna be a lot of space for others to sneak in. Yet the white wash was avoided. All Along The Watchtower will feature next year but then it's gonna be a bit of a Dylan drought moving forward.
'Bang Bang' Nancy Sinatra 'Season of the Witch' Donovan 'California Dreamin' Mamas and Papas 'No milk today' Herman's Hermits 'God only knows' Beach Boys 'What becomes of the brokenhearted?' Jimmy Ruffin 'Bus stop' Hollies 'Last train to Clarksville' Monkees 'River deep mountain high' Tina Turner 'Green green grass of home' Tom Jones
i love the 60s, great show, thanks listography! Hot 100: 1 Frank Sinatra - Strangers In The Nights 2 Righteous Brothers - (You're My) Soul & Inspiration 3 Lou Christie - Lightnin' Strikes 4 The Capitols - Cool Jerk 5 The Supremes - You Keep Me Hangin' On Deep Cuts: 1 Frank Sinatra - That's Life 2 Lee Hazlewood - Sand 3 Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning 4 Jacques Dutronc - Les Cactus 5 He Cried - The Shangri-Las Honorable mention: The Temptations - Get Ready & I'm Losing You
For The Beach Boys I'm most moved by Don't Talk Put Your Head On My Shoulder. I wish critics had hyped it more over the years. And for The Beatles it's hard to ignore Eleanor Rigby. I feel it's a song that stood out while also having a decent melody and lyrics.
My #1... God Only Knows - The Beach Boys... (Close between this & For No One - The Beatles) This will be my final Beach Boys entry... The Worst... They're Coming To Take Me Away - Napoleon XIV Hot 100... Paint It, Black - The Rolling Stones For No One - The Beatles Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles It's A Man's World - James Brown Wildcards... Sunshine Superman - Donovan (I never tire of listening to this) I'm Waiting For The Man - Velvet Underground Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks Rain - The Beatles The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) - Simon & Garfunkel
1966 - probably my favorite year for charting songs! And the Wildcards are becoming extremely difficult to narrow down as the age of great rock albums is upon us. I had to expand to 10 of each and even that was very tough. 10. Sounds Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel 9. Just Like Me - Paul Revere & The Raiders 8. Have You Seen Your Mother - Rolling Stones 7. Sunshine Superman - Donovan 6. Well Respected Man - Kinks 5. Shapes Of Things - Yardbirds 4. God Only Knows - Beach Boys 3. Time Won’t Let Me - Outsiders 2. Gloria - Shadows Of Knight 1. Paperback Writer/Rain - Beatles WILDCARDS 10. East-West - Paul Butterfield Blues Band 9. Orange Skies - Love 8. It’s No Secret - Jefferson Airplane 7. Sit Down I Think I Love You - Buffalo Springfield 6. Trouble Every Day - Mothers Of Invention 5. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again - Bob Dylan 4. The Trip - Donovan 3. Cheryl’s Going Home - Blues Project 2. I Feel Free - Cream 1. Tomorrow Never Knows - Beatles WORST SONG Ballad Of The Green Beret - Sgt. Barry Sadler DISHONORABLE MENTION I Love Onions - Susan Christie (would be another veggie song for Jason but it didn’t make the Top 40)
Hahah. I wanted to pick either I Love Onions or The Eggplant That Ate Chicago to keep the veggie theme going. Juanita Banana by The Peels or I’m a Nut by LeRoy Pullins would’ve sufficed, but alas, none made the Top 40. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic Keeping the Fruit/Vegetable theme going should've been more important than adhering to the Top 40 rule. Heck, Joe picked a song that wasn't released until 1967 for his list.
I agree with Joe about Hendrix being underrated as a vocalist. Apparently he hated his voice but I always thought he sounded cool. Songs I would add- Over Under Sideways Down( The Yardbirds) great stinging riff by my favourite guitarist Jeff Beck, Mother's Little Helper (Rolling Stones) but for best of the year Tommorow Never Knows (The Beatles) a groundbreaker that I would say is far more influential than anything else recorded this year.
Way too much good stuff,,, Hot 100 - 1. When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge (my #1 song of the year) 2. Last Train To Clarksville - The Monkees 3. Paint It, Black - The Rolling Stones 4. Devil With A Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly - Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels 5. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - The Monkees Wildcards - 1. You Keep Me Hangin' On - The Supremes 2. Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers 3. Tell It Like It Is - Aaron Neville 4. Femme Fatale - The Velvet Underground and Nico 5. Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stones 11. Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett 12. Drive Mr Car - The Beatles 13. Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations 14. Gimme Some Lovin' - The Spencer Davis Group 15. Reach Out, I'll Be There - The Four Tops 16. I'm A Believer - The Monkees 17. Good Lovin' - The Young Rascals 18. Taxman - The Beatles 19. Poor Side Of Town - Johnny Rivers 20. You Can't Hurry Love - The Supremes 21. You Got My Mind Messed Up - James Carr And, with all due respect to Kram, Lil' Red Riding Hood is a very cool song,, good stuff
Hi, here is MY top ten 1. Paint It Black 2. Sunny Afternoon 3. God Only Knows 4. Eight Miles High 5. Rain 6. Sound of Silence 7. Shapes Of Things 8. Eleanor Rigby 9. Just Like A Woman 10. Stop Stop Stop
'the pattern of my life and the puzzle that is meeeeee'....I went for Patterns K (just love the serious plucking and poetry of it) good call. The album is soooo great.
California Dreamin' is pleasant and obviously made a big impact in America (did well in Canada too), critics love it. Nice mellow sound, the brief break is functional enough. Feels a bit repetitive. But I think there's a strong argument that Monday Monday is actually much better. The melody extends nicely and there's a good livelier section that offers a striking contrast. Overall it's more of a journey.
Prince seemed to favor "Monday Monday" on his "1999" as a kind of aural footprint, like he did with another 1966 hit, Neil Hefti's "Batman Theme," on "Batdance." On 1999, the famous opening riff follows "Monday Monday" closely. It's an open question whether its intentional homage or not.
For me Jimmy and a surprising few others are good competition for the Beatles and Co next year and beyond....looking forwards to the next deep dive....
I totally thought the "We Lose Joe" part of the previous video title meant that Joe was quitting the show. I'm very happy to see that was not the case. Don't break up the band, guys.
In order of preference : Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones She Said She Said by the Beatles For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield Substitute by the Who Summer in the City by the Loving' Spoonful Sunshine Superman by Donovan I Am a Rock by Simon & Garfunkel Gimme Some Loving by the Spencer Davis Group Kicks by Paul Revere & the Raiders What Becomes of the Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin Honourable Mentions : Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix & the Experience Happy Jack by the Who Sloop John B by the Beach Boys Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys God Only Knows by the Beach Boys Devil With a Blue Dress On by Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels Sweet Talking' Guy by the Chiffons Red Rubber Ball by Circle Ain't Too Proud to Beg by the Temptations Land of 1000 Dances by Wilson Pickett Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett Cheers !

My most disappointing Google search ever was looking up what was #1 on the day I was born and finding “Ballad of the Green Berets.” For Kram, Brian Jones on marimba on “Under My Thumb.” I love almost all these 30 songs. Still surprised that no one even mentioned “I Fought the Law,” the epitome of a great rock and roll single. Replace Joe’s 4 Tops song with The Bobby Fuller 4.

@@TastesLikeMusic that's true. I just think the a Cappella section of Sloop John B is better, and plenty of songs that are completely brilliant all the way through.
An incredible year in which I couldn't even fit a single song from my favorite album of all time. 1) The Beach Boys - "God Only Knows" - Wanted to put this #2, but I just couldn't do that to you all. 2) The Byrds - "Eight Miles High" - Months after "Turn x3," they completely transfigured their sound. Amazing songwriting from Gene, visionary Coltrane-Ravi influence from Dave, amazingly disorienting guitar work from McGuinn, fantastic drumming from the Brian Jones look-alike, and then there's that bass-line. And those ghostly harmonies. Y'all are extreme haters that this wasn't in your lists. One of the most ground-breaking singles of all time. 3) The Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations" - An incredible musical achievement. 4) The Walker Brothers - "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" - Cheers to Bob Gaudio, but this version is beyond definitive. Immortal. 5) The Yardbirds - "Happenings Ten Years' Time Ago" - Another visionary single. The high point of the all-too-brief Beck-Page period. 6) The Four Tops - "Reach Out I'll Be There" - So galvanizing. 7) The Beatles - "Rain" - That guitar sound, that melody, that bass playing, that drumming... 8) The Beach Boys - “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” - Had to edit my list to include this, perhaps Brian’s best arrangement ever. Apologies to Stevie for knocking him out of the top 10... 9) The Association - "Cherish" - I get that people hate this, but it's a fantastic record. 10) The Beatles - "Paperback Writer" - The best Beatles guitar sound in '66, and that's saying something. Honorable mentions - Virtually everything from Revolver, "Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” by Stevie Wonder, “It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" by Them, The Leaves' "Hey Joe," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle."

Beatles, Stones, Dylan, etc...couldn't live with out 'em, but but they get enough love. Boatload of tunes that set the pattern for much of what I still listen to today. Some charted, some didn't. Often covered, never bettered, one of the most perfect soul ballads of all time.
I could reasonably put nothing but Beatles and Dylan and Beach Boys songs on my list, and that wouldn't be fun, so, to give myself a challenge, I have come up with a top ten in which no artist can appear more than once (thus, perversely, no "God Only Knows"!). 10 "California Dreamin'," The Mamas and the Papas 9 "Summer Wind," Frank Sinatra 8 "Wild Is the Wind," Nina Simone 7 "When a Man Loves a Woman," Percy Sledge 6 "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," Bob Dylan 5 "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," The Temptations 4 "Summer in the City," The Lovin' Spoonful 3 "Walk Away Renee," The Left Banke 2 "Caroline, No," The Beach Boys 1 "And Your Bird Can Sing," The Beatles
Good call ..I'm doing something similar each year...one song for an artist in top 10...oh and I also really loved Percy Sledge when listening this week...what a man

April Come She Will - Simon & Garfunkel Beck's Bolero - Jeff Beck California Dreamin’ - The Mamas and the Papas It's A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Ennio Morricone The list is sort of a mix between what charted and what was on albums. I trust my fellow Listographopers on what they have written so I stole some of it. Have a nice weekend everyone!

But it's definitely one of the best songs of all time. 1) "Here, There and Everywhere" (The Beatles) 2) "Eleanor Rigby" (The Beatles) 3) "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (The Beach Boys) 4) "Sloop John B" (The Beach Boys) 5) "Caroline, No" (The Beach Boys) 6) "God Only Knows" (The Beach Boys) 7) "California Dreamin'" (The Mamas and the Papas) 8) "You Can't Hurry Love" (The Supremes) 9) "Monday, Monday" (The Mamas and the Papas) 10) "You're Gonna Miss Me" (The 13th Floor Elevators)
lmao that was a quick poll for 66. I actually like Little Red Riding Hood (it's a fun, catchy tune) but I can't stand Ballad of the Green Berets, it feels way too much like propaganda and the song itself is just awful My top 10 (no order, but my god this is a hard year to narrow down lol): The Four Tops- Standing in the Shadows of Love The Beatles- Paperback Writer Bob Dylan- Visions of Johanna Simon and Garfunkel- I Am a Rock The Rolling Stones- Lady Jane The Kinks- A Well Respected Man The Beach Boys- Don't Talk Put Your Head on My Shoulders The Who- Happy Jack Love- 7 and 7 Is The Cyrkle- Red Rubber Ball
Wedding Bell Blues by the Bronx teenage genius Laura Nyro. A brilliantly structured song as it has no chorus yet was No.1 for the 5th Dimension cover in November, 1969. Also Nyro's And When I Die, the cover by Blood Sweat and Tears No.2 in November 1969. Three Nyro songs were in the top 10 at that time, the third being Eli's Comin covered by Three Dog Night.
Kramzer: the Stones did sort of do their own version of "Little Red Riding Hood". It was " Stray Cat Blues." Also, remember that nobody really bought "Ballad of the Green Berets" for musical reasons. They bought it for political or cultural reasons.
@@billslocum9819 You're right. "Green Berets" was more along the lines of a novelty record. Something people bought for the words and message instead of the music. Similar to "We Are the World" or the John Lennon tribute records in the 80's.
Really enjoy the playlist for listening to all the selections. My only criticism would be too heavy on Stones, Beatles and Beach Boys. I'd slim those picks down and insert equally good songs by Kinks, Hollies and Lovin Spoonful. There is one song on the list I never understood its popularity. That would be "River Deep, Mountain High". By the time this song came out, the Specter wall of sound was losing steam and this just doesn't seem like a recording that matches his earlier recordings.
I think the point is to list your FAVORITE songs - not a representive sampling of what was great for any particular year. There are plenty of music journals you can turn to for such lists. This should be something different.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Well, all these lists are subjective unless based on actual chart performance and sales. Its hard to argue with the quality of songs on each of their lists. With such a short list it would be difficult to pick a bad song. I'm just surprised at how much they included 3rd or 4th best songs from those groups above songs from other artists.
@@ijeff2005 Sometimes you can address that issue by putting more songs on an honorable mention list. That's what I do. For me it just depends on how I am reacting to the song right now. For 66 I notice that each of my chart top 5 and wildcard top 5 lists have all different artists, yet The Rolling Stones and Simon and Garfunkel appear on both lists. An obvious indication that both bands were really connecting with me.
@@NaughtyVampireGod I also wonder if my perspective is different because I lived during 1966 and heard all these songs fresh when they were first released. Hence, a song like "Kicks" had a greater impact on me than "Lady Jane" or "Under My Thumb". This doesn't mean Paul Revere and the Raiders is even close to being at the level of the Rolling Stones looking back at 50 years of history. Those 2 RS songs wouldn't even be in my top 20 favorite Stones songs. I'm pretty sure the Listography guys weren't alive back in 1966. I continue to be amazed at the depth of their music knowledge and the thoughtfulness that goes into their analysis. Very refreshing. I also like that they don't just focus on a specific music genre like heavy metal, prog, etc. They just focus on great music.
@@ijeff2005 Possibly age is a factor but not decisive, imo. As long as you actively search for music that you enjoy, when/where you were born really should not be a major factor. I wasn't around in 66, but it's one of my favorite years. I discovered Paul Revere and the Raiders after the fact, but they were a top 10 band for me on one of my earliest lists. Even today (for 1966) I have two of their songs as HM on my charts list and one on the wildcard list, in the #3 position: Kicks, Hungry, and Good Thing, respectively. The Boys, whatever their ages (safe to say they were not here in 1966), are active explorers of good music - that's obvious. Era doesn't really matter it seems.
The year of the greatest single ever - Good Vibrations - Been number one every year on my Festive 50. The sounds of silence was a worthy runner-up.
1. Summer in the City - Lovin Spoonful
2. Season of the Witch - Donovan

5. I Want You - Bob Dylan
6. God Only Knows - Beach Boys

You insulted him a little bit. You got a little out of order yourself.
Yes, "Summer in the City"! Check out the Pilobolus silhouette video for this if haven't seen it.
We got 5 similar picks counting my HMs. Cool.
65-67 are VERY tough because it was a literal explosion of GREAT music:
1) Rain - Beatles
2) Tomorrow Never Knows - Beatles
3) And Your Bird Can Sing - Beatles
4) Eight Miles High - Byrds
5) Scarborough Fair - Simon & Garfunkel
6) Lady Jane - Stones
7) Time - Pozo Seco Singers
8) Wild Mountain Thyme - Byrds
9) Paint it Black - Stones
10) Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
Honorable Mention: Paperback Writer, God Only Knows, Sunshine Superman, Time Won't Let Me, Bus Top, Summer In The City, Wipe Out, You Baby, Early Morning Rain, Sunny Afternoon....and on and on.
I had forgotten "Time" by the Pozo Seco Singers.. stunning.
for some fun Listologists check out Rundgren's 'Rain' on his 'Faithful' album
My Favorite Singles, of 1966:
“These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” - Nancy Sinatra
“Last Train to Clarksville” - The Monkees
“Homeward Bound” - Simon & Garfunkel
“Good Vibrations” - The Beach Boys
“Look Through My Window” - The Mamas and the Papas

“My Little Red Book” - Love
“Doctor Robert” - The Beatles
“My Baby Cried All Night Long” - Lee Hazlewood
Worst single:
“I’m Your Puppet” - James & Bobby Purify
Ah. Nice to see Dr. Robert there. Greatest short bridge in history? Opps. Chorus actually, the "well, well, well". Amazing.Forget they repeated it. I guess the doctor will see me now . .
@ tom klensk jr good to see look thru my window. That is my number1.im had 3 mamas and papas in my top 10
The guilty undertaker sighs
The lonesome organ grinder cries
The silver saxophones say I should refuse you
The cracked bells and washed-out horns
Blow into my face with scorn
But it's not that way
I wasn't born to lose you
Maybe my favourite opening verse from any song ever. Good on Kram for including it.
1966 was an excellent year for pop. Not only the best year so far in this series, but I probably consider it the deepest year of the 1960s in terms of great singles. All these are Hot 100 charting singles:
1. Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? - The Rolling Stones (#9). My favorite early Stones song, and one I think is maybe a bit underrated due to it being a non-album single. The bass and drums really shine on this, and the horns are awesome. I also dig Mick's dark, cryptic lyrics ("You take your choice at this time, the brave old world or the slide to the depths of decline.")
Five more from the usual suspects:
6. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 - Bob Dylan (#2)
7. Sunshine Superman - Donovan (#1)
8. Eight Miles High - The Byrds (#14)
9. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones (#1)
10. Paperback Writer - The Beatles (#1)
Hardly any overlap with the listography crew. Kramzer had a couple of my top 10, Jason had one.
I had Nancy Sinatra already for 1965 like so often in those years between countries, just like Kram's Hey Joe this year that I have for 1967...
Great choice with Solitary Man. I love it. And it's a fun song to play on guitar as well.
Solid list.
Tomorrow never knows is still inspiring pop and rock songs to this day....superb end to Revolver👍😎

You went outside the box some as I did and I love your list 'cept I don't like the song "Good Vibrations".
"Pretty much everything on Revolver"
Literally every song on Pet Sounds is better than on Revolver and you havent selected any of them.
My mini-tradition: JKJ choices are ineligible for my list:

01. Sunshine Superman - Donovan
02. Eight Miles High - The Byrds
03. I Saw Her Again - Mamas & Papas
04. Daydream - Lovin' Spoonful
05. Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
Wild Card:
06. Got to Get You Into My Life - The Beatles
07. I Am Waiting - The Rolling Stones
08. Sunday Morning - Velvet Underground
09. Orange Skies - Love
10. Suzanne - Judy Collins
Basement Tapes (released decades later):
11. Hang On to Your Ego - The Beach Boys
12. Museum - Donovan (first and better 1966 version)
13. Stranger in a Strange Land - Blackburn & Snow (rumored to be written by David Crosby.)
14. Windy - Ruthann Friedman (written about a male friend, in David Crosby's basement.)
15. Waltz for Lumumba - The Spencer Davis Group (1966 release instrumental jam)
Beatles vs Stones. Never more apparent than in 1966. My initial list contained 5 Stones songs, 3 Beatles and 2 Donovan. After repeated plays, this is how it shakes out:
Top 100 Charts:
1. Paint it Black - Rolling Stones
2. Sunshine Superman - Donovan

Song of the Year: Tomorrow Never Knows
Paint it Black cheated a little.

Hits:
5. River deep, mountain high - Ike and Tina Turner

3. Bus Stop - The Hollies
2. Solitary man - Neil Diamond

When a Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge
Lady Jane - Rolling Stones
God Only Knows - Beach Boys
Check out Jimmy LaFave's cover of Walk Away Renee.
My 5 favorites from the playlist:
1. The Beatles- Tomorrow Never Knows
2. Ike & Tina Turner- River Deep, Mountain High
3. The Beatles- Rain
4. The Mamas & the Papas- California Dreamin'
5. The Beatles- She Said She Said
10. Don't Look Away - The Who
9. I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles
8. Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones
7. Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
6. Whiskey Man - The Who
5. Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stone
4. Wouldn't It Be Nice - The Beach Boys
3. Spoonful - Cream
2. For No One - The Beatles
1. Rosy Won't You Please Come Home - The Kinks
I wonder which song is going to win Best Song of the Year this week? It's going to be a nail biter!
Nobody in the video or the comments has mentioned Dylan's "Visions Of Johanna," so I thought I'd throw it out there. It'd be in my top 10 for sure.
If I were including non-Hot 100 tracks, I would've included it. Probably my favorite Dylan song. Beautiful lyrics, and the song itself is just gorgeous. It's a must listen for people who only think Dylan is a "lyrics guy".
See the comment right below yours, Whammy. :)
My favorite Dylan song and definitely my favorite song of this year, although I don’t know if Waterloo Sunset is ‘66 or ‘67 off hand. I think that might be the greatest song ever
@@painless465 got Waterloo Sunset lined up for next year....like many i imagine...
I think from here until the early 70s is my favourite run for music. I'm counting like 100 songs at this point that I would want to give a shoutout to. We're just on the cusp of psychedelia now, and I quite like how it's just bubbling under the surface in a lot of the big songs around this time.
Billboard Songs
1. *Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones #1* (The most innovative of their big songs, and among my personal favourites. Gateway song for me to 60s music.)
2. *Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys #1* (One of the most iconic progressive pop songs of all-time. In truth the modular style has never been my preference, but it's undeniable here.)
3. *Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles #11* (More brilliant songwriting from Paul, and the incredible strings!)
4. *I Want You by Bob Dylan (#20)* (Maybe the most poppy Dylan would ever get in his prime, and I love it!)
5. *Wouldn't It Be Nice by The Beach Boys #8* (Top class melody, vocals, production. The sunshine pop/coming-of age aspects really help bridge the gap between what preceded and the rest of Pet Sounds.)
Wildcard Songs
1. *WINNER: God Only Knows by The Beach Boys (#39)* (The guys already have the praise on this covered. For me it's all about that swirling fade which could go for minutes longer and I wouldn't mind one bit.)
2. *Under My Thumb by The Rolling Stones* (Surely pushing up against that line with the lyrics, but I'm partial to take it as a character narrative. Cannot resist the marimba. One of their best album cuts.)
3. *Let's Go Away for Awhile by The Beach Boys* (A short journey, but you really get to take in all the beautiful details of the production on this Pet Sounds instrumental.)
4. *Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground & Nico* (A short twinkling lullaby. Eschews going as far down their experiment path while also sounding nothing quite like anything else at the time, which is right up my alley.)
5. *7 and 7 Is by Love (#33)* (Heavy, unrelenting, and just over two minutes! Garage psych with shades of punk and surf rock too.)
WORST: The Ballad of the Green Berets by SSgt Barry Sadley #1
Plodding, lame, ridiculously uninteresting, and the biggest seller of the year. To think this held both the Beatles and Rolling Stones off the top spot. At least the Mike Douglas song, another one I considered, kind of sounds like it belongs in some kind of musical of the time. It could have been worse had Johnny Rebel's white supremacist singles charted.
If I could relive any decade of music it would be January 1st 1964 to December 31st 1973. No other 10 year run can compare, imo.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Pretty hard to argue with that!
Great list!
My favorite years for music is probably late 70s to early 80s.
Isn’t Sunday Morning’67? That song is just about perfect
@@painless465 It was released as a single in December '66 prior to the album, and never charted. Since '67 is already loaded with wildcards, figured it fits best here!
for me 1966 is yet another year of prime Nuggets goodness..
Don’t Look Back - The Remains
You’re Gonna Miss Me - Roky Erickson
Psychotic Reaction - The Count Five
Talk, Talk - The Music Machine
7 and 7 is - Love

Totally forgot about April Come She Will, absolutely love that song.
My Top 10 for 1966
1)God Only Knows - Beach Boys
2)I Just Wasn't Made For These Times - Beach Boys
3)Wouldn't It Be Nice - Beach Boys
4)Caroline No - Beach Boys

9)I Fought The Law - Bobby Fuller Four
10)Ninety Nine & A Half Won't Do - Wilson Pickett
I think we've hit the motherlode here. I think my 11-20 might be stronger than my top 10 of just a couple of years before. As previously these all made the UK Top 50 this year:
God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
It's a Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown*
Eight Miles High - The Byrds
Reach Out I'll be There - The 4 Tops
California Dreaming - The Mamas and the Papas
Paint it, Black - The Rolling Stones**
When a Man Loves a Woman _ Percy Sledge
River Deep Mountain High - Ike and Tina Turner
* Proof that I'm prepared to overlook rather dated lyrical sentiments when the music is fantastic
** Proof that I'm prepared to overlook very bad grammar when the music is fantastic
River Deep Mountain High may have only got to number 88 on the Hot 100 but it was number 3 in the UK and got to number 1 in Spain. Generalisimo Francisco Franco's thoughts on the latter are not on record but I know he is still dead.
Alllllll great songs. - Joe
66 is a big year for my development as a musician because of Freak Out! by the Mothers of Invention. it's also the beginning of my favorite period of the Who. interesting to hear Jason remark how he hates the psychedelic phase of pop music. this is a pretty rich year for psych groups that I still love today.
5. "Mother's Little Helper" - Rolling Stones (those twin 12-strings that sounded like sitar!)
4. "Who Are the Brain Police?" - Mothers of Invention (deeply disturbing, the way I like it!)
3. "Season of the Witch" - Donovan (great song! so many bands covered it in the 60s)
2. "7 and 7 Is" - Love (the energy level of that track is seismic!)
1. "Disguises" - The Who (I've learned to play this and "Happy Jack" on guitar because they're awesome songs)
some of the psych groups I love debuted this year like 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Love...this was also the beginning of Jefferson Airplane, and an important psych single by the Byrds ("8 Miles High")
Who are the Brain Police is great!
1. Song Of The Year: Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
2. Visions Of Johanna - Bob Dylan
3. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
4. Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
5. California Dreaming - The Mamas & The Papas
6. Bus Stop - The Hollies
7. Everybody's Talkin' - Fred Neil
8. I Want You - Bob Dylan
9. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
10. Sounds Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
11. Rain - The Beatles
12. Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones
Very nice list :)

5. I Take What I Want - Sam & Dave
Worst - They're Coming To Take Me Away/Napoleon XIV
Song of the Year - Rain/The Beatles
There was so much I ended up leaving off especially trying to stick to one song per artist but nothing wrong with having lots of great songs to listen to while making the list! Many on your lists were serious contenders that just missed ("Reach Out I'll Be There", "Paint It, Black", "Wouldn't It Be Nice" or really any song off Pet Sounds honestly, "California Dreaming"). Anyway, here's my list.
Hot 100:
- Love - 7 and 7 Is
- The Byrds - Eight Miles High
- Stevie Wonder - Uptight (Everything's Alright)
- The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love
Wildcard:
-Otis Redding - Just One More Day
- The Ugly Ducklings - Nothin'
- The Beatles - For No One
- The Rolling Stones - As Tears Go By
- Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Comin'
Worst: Gonna go with the obvious one too ("The Ballad of the Green Berets"), checked out a bunch of other crappy songs but nothing was as bad as that.
My #1 is also "God Only Knows". What else is there to say?
You Can't Hurry Love is great but I think I like the Phil Collins version more, love the energy.
I’ll deal with this comment in a few weeks. -Jason

The Sunrays - A Little Dog And His Boy
album by a ‘new’ act :
The Association - And Then Along Comes…
least favorite song :
The New Vaudeville Band - Winchester Cathedral (for having won the Grammy award)
nice to see that the grammies were nailin' it even back then . . a winning streak that took them all way to Milli Vanilli - and beyond
1. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
2. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
3. I Want You - Bob Dylan
4. Here, There, and Everywhere - The Beatles
5. The Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel
Yes! The Walker Brothers' The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore!! #1 in the UK, buckaroos!!! Hoping y'all continue to explore the career of Scott Walker.
Charting songs:
5. The Beach Boys - Sloop John B
4. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
3. The Beach Boys - Wouldn’t it be Nice
2. Brian Wilson - Caroline, No [Better than the album version, because it doesn’t feature the strange ending with the train.]
Wildcards:
5. The Beach Boys - You Still Believe in Me [Listen to the vocals only version of this. Fantastic.]
4. The Beach Boys - Let’s go away for a while [Probably the last instrumental that will be on any of my SOTY lists. As I said before, imo the best instrumental song ever made.]
3. The Beach Boys - I’m Waiting for the Day
2. The Beach Boys - Here Today [I wonder if ‘Eye of the Tiger’ was inspired by this song’s bridge.]
1. The Beach Boys - I Just Wasn’t Made for these Times [Sometimes, I feel very sad as well.]
SONG OF THE YEAR 1966: The Beach Boys - God Only Knows [Not my favorite song of all time, but long as there are stars above us…okay just kidding. Top 10 song of all time for me.]
If you think I completely ignored other artists, here’s some songs that are also great from 1966, but didn’t make the cut:
The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby [This song has a special feel to it.]
The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows [Such a futuristic song. I love it.]
The Beatles - Rain
The Mothers of Invention - Motherly Love
The Mothers of Invention - Wowie Zowie
The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
The Who - Boris the Spider [Really strange song, but also really good.]
Nah. Not boring. Gotta pick it like you hear it.
Gotta say it's not boring....just not very well researched....🤷♂️though I did enjoy my listen of Freak Out last night amongst many many others....👍
@@threestringsomg I don't think that you now how much research I did ;)
@@Sir_Eyeball not much evidence of it....there's loads of songs that are all timers in 67 not just the few obvious ones...66 I meant...and 67....,lol and 68....69.....70.....etc...Sheesh that's alot of digging to do...
As far as the Beach Boys - I love the Your Charting Songs but I dislike the Wildcards. I don't get those songs at all. I once read why they were great but I stopped reading and listened again and I continued to be right.
5. The Beatles - I'm Only Sleeping
4. Simon & Garfunkel - April, Come She Will
3. Bob Dylan - Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again
2. Bob Dylan - Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands
1. Bob Dylan - I Want You
When your number one album of all time is in the year there's not gonna be a lot of space for others to sneak in. Yet the white wash was avoided. All Along The Watchtower will feature next year but then it's gonna be a bit of a Dylan drought moving forward.
Bumped Visions of Johanna for April, Come She Will and switched Beatles tracks from Here, There and Everywhere to I'm Only Sleeping.
'Bang Bang' Nancy Sinatra
'Season of the Witch' Donovan
'California Dreamin' Mamas and Papas
'No milk today' Herman's Hermits
'God only knows' Beach Boys
'What becomes of the brokenhearted?' Jimmy Ruffin
'Bus stop' Hollies
'Last train to Clarksville' Monkees
'River deep mountain high' Tina Turner
'Green green grass of home' Tom Jones
Season of the Witch was on my short list for song of the year.

I Love Onions - Susan Christie
(would be another veggie song for Jason but it didn’t make
the Top 40)
Agree w/you on "Tomorrow Never Knows." That's gotta be a top 10 song for the year.
For sure, "Tomorrow Never Knows" sounds like nothing else in 1966. That's like a good 25-30 years ahead of its time.

1. Paint It Black
2. Sunny Afternoon
3. God Only Knows
4. Eight Miles High
5. Rain
6. Sound of Silence
7. Shapes Of Things
8. Eleanor Rigby
9. Just Like A Woman
It's an open question whether its intentional homage or not.
look thru my window was my 1 in 66
For me Jimmy and a surprising few others are good competition for the Beatles and Co next year and beyond....looking forwards to the next deep dive....
I totally thought the "We Lose Joe" part of the previous video title meant that Joe was quitting the show. I'm very happy to see that was not the case. Don't break up the band, guys.

My most disappointing Google search ever was looking up what was #1 on the day I was born and finding “Ballad of the Green Berets.”
For Kram, Brian Jones on marimba on “Under My Thumb.”
I love almost all these 30 songs. Still surprised that no one even mentioned “I Fought the Law,” the epitome of a great rock and roll single. Replace Joe’s 4 Tops song with The Bobby Fuller 4.

If the entire song God Only Knows had the brilliance of its last 50 seconds you guys would be right. But there's those first 2 minutes to wait through.
The best things in life come to those who wait 2 minutes until the end of God Only Knows. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic that's true. I just think the a Cappella section of Sloop John B is better, and plenty of songs that are completely brilliant all the way through.
Sloop John B is probably my least favorite on the whole album. But to each their own. - Joe
Joe enjoying Pet Sounds so much, he’s cosplaying as Mike Love c.1966. Love it!
Tomorrow never knows by far blows everything out of the water,
I think "I Am Waiting" is the brightest hidden gem on Aftermath.
I agree. The montage in Rushmore accompanied by “I Am Waiting” is probably my favorite one from all of WA’s movies.
1. Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
2. The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore - The Walker Brothers
3. You Still Believe In Me - The Beach Boys
4. Substitute - The Who

6. I Am A Rock - Simon & Garfunkel
7. Bus Stop - The Hollies
8. Little Girl - The Syndicate of Sound

1. Sloop John B
2. Caroline, No
Bonus Simon & Garfunkel:
1. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her
2. April Come She Will
Bonus Who:
1. Happy Jack
2. A Quick One, While He's Away - the end portion was used perfectly in my 3rd favorite movie ever, "Rushmore".
Nice call with "Psycho." I can't say the same for "The Dangling Conversation," though. "Psycho" has better lyrics. I'm not kidding.
@@harmonium8198 Better vocals, too. Haha
Beatles, Stones, Dylan, etc...couldn't live with out 'em, but but they get enough love. Boatload of tunes that set the pattern for much of what I still listen to today. Some charted, some didn't. And in no order. 96 Tears-? and the Mysterians I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night-Electric Prunes Splash1-13th Floor Elevators Dirty Water-The Standells Don't Look Back-The Remains Seven and Seven Is-Love I Hate You-The Monks Four Women-Nina Simone Psychotic Reaction-Count Five I'm Not Like Everybody Else-The Kinks I'll Be Your Mirror-The Velvet Underground (1966 b-side of All Tomorrows Parties single edit) Mr. Farmer-The Seeds Decoration Day-John Lee Hooker Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi-Jacques Dutronc Over, Under, Sideways, Down-The Yardbirds I hope that someone, for 1967, mentions Dark End Of The Street-James Carr. Often covered, never bettered, one of the most perfect soul ballads of all time.
Kram's facial expressions kill me!
I could reasonably put nothing but Beatles and Dylan and Beach Boys songs on my list, and that wouldn't be fun, so, to give myself a challenge, I have come up with a top ten in which no artist can appear more than once (thus, perversely, no "God Only Knows"!).
10 "California Dreamin'," The Mamas and the Papas
9 "Summer Wind," Frank Sinatra
8 "Wild Is the Wind," Nina Simone
7 "When a Man Loves a Woman," Percy Sledge
6 "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," Bob Dylan
5 "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," The Temptations
4 "Summer in the City," The Lovin' Spoonful
3 "Walk Away Renee," The Left Banke
2 "Caroline, No," The Beach Boys
1 "And Your Bird Can Sing," The Beatles
That Percy Sledge song is lightning in a bottle.
Good call ..I'm doing something similar each year...one song for an artist in top 10...oh and I also really loved Percy Sledge when listening this week...what a man
My list!
April Come She Will - Simon & Garfunkel
Beck's Bolero - Jeff Beck
California Dreamin’ - The Mamas and the Papas
It's A Man's Man's Man's World - James Brown
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Ennio Morricone
The list is sort of a mix between what charted and what was on albums. I trust my fellow Listographopers on what they have written so I stole some of it. Have a nice weekend everyone!

SONG OF THE YEAR : BEACH BOYS Wouldn't It Be Nice
A Quick One, While He's Away by The Who is easily my fave for the year.
yeah, a great mini-opera . . . that's why I kind of raise an eyebrow when people are like queen invented the mini-opera with bohemian rhapsody
I'll be honest, I love God Only Knows, but it's my fourth favourite song on the album. I like Wouldn't It Be Nice, Caroline, No, and Sloop John B a bit more. But it's definitely one of the best songs of all time.
1) "Here, There and Everywhere" (The Beatles)
2) "Eleanor Rigby" (The Beatles)
3) "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (The Beach Boys)
4) "Sloop John B" (The Beach Boys)
5) "Caroline, No" (The Beach Boys)
6) "God Only Knows" (The Beach Boys)
7) "California Dreamin'" (The Mamas and the Papas)
8) "You Can't Hurry Love" (The Supremes)
9) "Monday, Monday" (The Mamas and the Papas)
10) "You're Gonna Miss Me" (The 13th Floor Elevators)
lmao that was a quick poll for 66. I actually like Little Red Riding Hood (it's a fun, catchy tune) but I can't stand Ballad of the Green Berets, it feels way too much like propaganda and the song itself is just awful
My top 10 (no order, but my god this is a hard year to narrow down lol):
The Four Tops- Standing in the Shadows of Love
The Beatles- Paperback Writer
Bob Dylan- Visions of Johanna
Simon and Garfunkel- I Am a Rock
The Rolling Stones- Lady Jane
The Kinks- A Well Respected Man
The Beach Boys- Don't Talk Put Your Head on My Shoulders
The Who- Happy Jack
Love- 7 and 7 Is
The Cyrkle- Red Rubber Ball
Red Rubber Ball is great. Wanted to get it on my list, but you know...The Beatles. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic i made it a rule to limit one song per artist or else it would all be Beatles and Bob Dylan lol
🤯gimmie some lovin Joe for picking the same song!🤣🤣🤣...it's awesome
Wedding Bell Blues by the Bronx teenage genius Laura Nyro. A brilliantly structured song as it has no chorus yet was No.1 for the 5th Dimension cover in November, 1969. Also Nyro's And When I Die, the cover by Blood Sweat and Tears No.2 in November 1969. Three Nyro songs were in the top 10 at that time, the third being Eli's Comin covered by Three Dog Night.
the numbers for the guys jumping up daily. hit the subscribe button . pound it.
Kramzer: the Stones did sort of do their own version of "Little Red Riding Hood". It was " Stray Cat Blues."
Also, remember that nobody really bought "Ballad of the Green Berets" for musical reasons. They bought it for political or cultural reasons.
"Ballad" was counter-counterculture programming, absolutely right.
@@billslocum9819 You're right. "Green Berets" was more along the lines of a novelty record. Something people bought for the words and message instead of the music. Similar to "We Are the World" or the John Lennon tribute records in the 80's.
Spider and the Fly is very much in that vein too.
