    one thing I do with the midi tracks is set multiple tracks to the same channel and then program variations. you can then solo them or play a few together in which case if it's a mono synth you get all sorts of voice cancelling surprises and with a poly or para ..well you get it

      @@LiamKillen midi loop-back is a neat trick you could do or use digitone to layer more midi tracks to dt and vice versa. personally i got myself an OT to do the mixing and fxs, but it’s kinda tape based so a bit different workflow. for trig based seqencing i think newer devices as dt do a bit better (just some qol and engine improvements).

      So going forward what do you think will be replacing the digitakt?

  • @andrij.demianczuk
    @andrij.demianczuk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So the Digitakt and Octatrack handle effects differently - if you’re using the Octa as a mixer, then effects and parameters carry from one pattern to the next, but machines are independent of parts which is why it’s easy to transition between patterns and have effects either not change or ‘morph’ if you have different pattern lengths for each track. It adds a huge performance aspect to the Octa which I’m just in love with. My go-to setup is always my Digitakt + Octatrack + Synth-of-the-moment.

    • @LiamKillen

      @@LiamKillen IMO, it’s the best device Elektron has put out. The Octa is the one constant in my DAW-less setup because it’s such a powerful performance tool and sampler. Once you work with the different machine types and learn about parts to flip samples it’ll change how you perform live!

    Digitakt currently heart of my dawless set up too. Also utilising the 8 midi tracks to expand it out. 1 track for a Moog minitaur, 1 track for the ju06a, and 6 tracks for the Tr6s. A lot of menu diving though so haven't quite nailed it from a performance point of view. Using it more to create ideas and then jam them into Ableton where I'll then go and refine things after. Really like the look of the midi controller though! Maybe that is what I need to take the step into performance

  • @catsandchords625
    @catsandchords625 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With the Octatrack you can use tracks to run audio through and apply effects to the track so if the pattern coming in changes, it doesn’t matter for the effects because the Octa just sees it as audio coming in.
    Or you can use one of the tracks as a master track and apply effects to that. Same idea but effects would be applied to the whole mix. If you use separate tracks with effects rather than the master you can split out things better so drums can be effected differently than synths, etc, and keep them controlled separately from pattern changes. Octatrack is pretty expensive though so a cheaper option would be to use external effects pedals instead of the Digitakt internal ones. If you went with ones they accept midi you can use one of the Digitakt midi channels to organize presets and automate changes if needed.

    For those intending to produce finished tracks on a completely dawless basis, I suggest you first work in a DAW for a few months/years to find out what you can really do, then go ahead and recreate what you learned in the DAW with your hardware setup. It will help making the right decisions on what hardware to really get.

    • @LiamKillen
      @LiamKillen  ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree actually- unless you just have no interest in working with a DAW / staring at a screen.

    • @Johnmb23
      @Johnmb23 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Totally disagree unless you’re starting with Reason. In the 80’s everything was hardware and learning midi and how to hook things up was done by trial and error (and your friends). Back in the 80/90’s the “DAW” part was called a studio and if you made it to that point you were paying someone else to do it. Making music with limited tracks and sound causes you to learn. Todays DAWs with virtually unlimited tracks spoils people and a new artist going from unlimited tracks, creating with a mouse, and not having to hook up any gear doesn’t translate over to “this is a pain in the ass! This sucks!” 😂

    • @meilstone
      @meilstone 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see what you mean. However, I never had the opportunity to work in a real studio with all the hardware required let alone hooking it all up. So I started out with a free version of Cubase, then went on to Sonar and finally Ableton. It helped me understand how audio signals flow, how send and returns work, how to use compressors and limiters, etc. etc. A DAW environment allowed me to work on a professional level. You can publish tracks using stock/free plugins. However, I became frustrated with CPU-usage and audio/midi latency and finally got some hardware devices. The DAW-experience made it much easier for me to pick and choose the right gear on a budget because I knew pretty much where I wanted to go.

    Ok, first off I know I’m late to this party and I’m not sure what you’ve added to your set up. I subscribed so maybe I’ll be onetime next time 😂. I was watching on my tv and when you said you might want to add a synth along with the issue of filters and patterns not carrying over from one pattern to the next? I felt I needed to come on and add a solution that I believe would be awesome for your set up. I have a digitakt and there is a piece a gear I love to hook up to it that doesn’t get very much love from people out there yet, most of them are clueless as to what this machine really can do. I would suggest the Roland MC 707.. this groove box also works with eight tracks. The digi has 8 midi tracks soooo there’s the first plus. The 707 has an amazing synth engine (Fantom) and it can cover almost all your needs. For each track you can choose between drum machine (either sample or synth based) a synth engine, or a looper. The 707 also has an audio in plus effect return jacks that you can assign each to route through one of the tracks. This gives you the ability to assign an effect too it and then run through the master effects. This would fix your effects issue when switching patterns if you run the digi through the 707. These two machines are made for each other.

    I recently came across what you're saying about the MPC One not great at receiving midi information. For me I found the bug where if separate midi channels send the same note then one would get cancelled. It totally broke my "iPad as a sequencer" workflow (ipad to mpc - record midi data while forwarding to hardware synths - edit after jam for polishing) and now I'm selling it on. Came here for the Digitakt though as I'm currently thinking about putting one in my setup, looks like it can be a good brain for setup.

    so yeah, how do you effeciently program/come up with drops and transitions on a hardware sequencer? the majority of yt videos doesn't ever go further than showing the process of creating hooks, but how to quickly figure out a way to go into/out of a transition on a pattern based hw sequncer... noone just talks about it. I am usually better off adapting existing arrangement to digitakt's song mode than figuring out what goes into which pattern for a successfull transition. Doesn't feel like enhancing creativity, rather fighting some annoying bureaucratic restriction. If you want to try out several transition ideas.. forget about it. There is no out of the box way to flexibly program raisers and breakdowns on digitakt, say, so best you can do is come up with your own kind of kludgy solution (e.g. use another device for these, baking transitions into pattern copies...)

    • @LiamKillen

    REALLY feeling this video and what you’re saying, today.
    Been almost buying an Arturia BeatStep (non-Pro) to be able to manually send single-message CC/PC messages with the pads, in addition to its other few features. Limits!
    But also, stuff like Digitakt, SL MkIII, and Launchpad Pro Mk3 (?) can sequence those sorts of messages, but not always (or ever) be used to manually send those messages, apart from a sequencer running… nothing’s perfect? Embrace the DAW? 😱
    I’m exploring all this for stuff like being able to transpose loopers (via pitch or varispeed) or automate parameters on my effects pedals, for instance (like on Andre LaFosse’s and Hologram Electronics’ YT channels). I’m not even sure what exactly I want to do or am willing to learn; I just see people doing cool stuff with similar gear as that which I have, but I’m not planning on ever leaving the home studio, and some of these people are very much considering live performance. Oy. 😅 I wish I could live near Perfect Circuit and try stuff in person. *not a sponsored comment 😜

      Honestly it starts with just finding a set up you like and committing to trying to achieve that. Chances are you’ll land somewhere completely different but will have a solid idea of what’s possible.

      @@LiamKillen Yeah! Sometimes I plan ahead and also somehow feel my way along in the dark, to see where I want to go, and also where things will take me. I do a lot of Krautrock-ish, in the moment solo jamming, building up layers with loopers. I create musical sounds-with a few short excerpts worthy of sharing on the ‘gram-all while basically, perpetually trying to learn my gear. Like you say, DAWless is perfect for focusing on becoming familiar with our gear.
      I had a setup that included about 50-60 pedals forming signal chains within chains, and I had a problem, which required me to dismantle all that in late 2021. Since then, I’ve been kind of building smaller rigs out of bits of my total assemblage of synths, grooveboxes, keyboards, pedals, iOS devices, guitars, drum machines, mixers, and … occasionally a computer, if only to record the stereo output of everything else. Often times, for fun, it’s just whatever one instrument strikes my fancy, combined with lots of loopers and effects. tl;dr much? 😉

      @@LiamKillen I didn't put a time stamp because the comments you show are on the screen at the very beginning of the video. Even your response feels like you didn't even try to check what I mean't by simply scrubbing through the video, or you'd instantly know what I meant.
      Almost feels like you just replied to sass me for being the only one to care... almost troll like? 🤔
      Guess you just don't know what the word really means, fair enough then.
      I had just found your channel in the last few days, and thought it was really thorough and informative, but you calling some simple criticism to a dramatic/clickbait title "trolling" kind of put me off. Your attitude now reaffirms it. Such a shame.
      Anyway, you'll just write this off as another "troll" I guess, so nbd. Best of luck with your channel and attitude ☺🫶
