Your mall has more stores open than in my area right now. It is so hard to get new stores in the malls because they want outrageous prices for renting the stores out. It has been this way for years and years now. Not just because of the pandemic.

Hello Valeria & Alex, I recognised some of the shops one of which was called Cozy Home and I have some of their warm bed linen on my bed currently. Your mall has more shops open than in the mall where I used to work where some shops never opened at all and they are still empty now, 7 years after the mall was built.
I must be old fashioned, malls here and there seem to be filled with fancy stuff most people do not need or can afford. I much prefer to shop at a small place locally owned for foods, hardware and such. We order clothes on line, rarely something does not fit. Best to you both.
Some things are the same everywhere. Alex doesn’t look too enthusiastic about going shopping with the wife! Lol. We are really all the same. I wish we could understand that and stop all the wars and violence against each other. It would truly be a wonderful world!

Walking around a mall is always great for burning some calories and healthier than just sitting at home. Which can be tempting if a person doesn’t get out of the house.
Yesterday I visited a popular cosmetics store Podruzhka and was absolutely shocked by the variety of choice from Asian, Belorussian and Russians brands. I even didn't notice whether there were still some Western brands on shelves because I examined the huge choice of new brands with the open mouth and sparkling eyes. I think we didn't lose anything with the Western brands manifestations and exits. Their place will be soon occupied by others and they won't have chance to return.
Interesting so many store names use Latin letters, even in some cases I saw, to spell out Russian words.. Also that mall looks to be healthier than the local malls where I live, but this is also near a big city.
Well, many Russians may well understand English. Most of them studied English in educational institutions. The problem is that when you haven't used it for 10-20 years, you forget. For example, I understand simple spoken English, I can watch videos in English, but I absolutely cannot speak it. That is, I will not be able to compose even a simple phrase. P.s. I think a more accurate translation would be arts and craft store, because it seems to be a business more similar to Hobby Lobby, and less similar to Home Depot. While there often is significant overlap, generally DIY store tends to mean hardware store. Think construction, not crocheting.
I can proudly say that we do not have any products in our stores that are from Russia. No one wanted to buy them and they were always of poor quality. 🇫🇮

I can read Wikipedia and look at the dictionary, and that's not explained anywhere I've seen. But now I know. Thank you so much. From a non-Russian perspective, it seems quaint how many of these Latin/English letters are reused for something different in the Russian alphabet, but only some of the time. Like, I know that д can look like a lowercase g in cursive, but now I also know that if it's typeset, it might look like a q. I wonder if some of these conventions emerged due to early printers literally reusing existing type. I suppose it helps that other than this, there isn't a letter Q in the Russian alphabet. No. There are not many shop lifters . Police will come and criminals are prosecuted according to the law . Typically there can be problems with kids and elderly people who might steal . If they are caught first time , usually they are allowed to go with warnings . Maybe next time they will be just not allowed to the store . Or there will be special attention to them. Attitude to shoplifting is negative . Cause it is basically damaging shop assistants . And shop assistants are regular people from the same community . It is like stealing from your sister or mom .
The intent of the sanctions is to affect the ruling class. Unfortunately, the ruling class has many options and the common people usually bare the brunt of the pain. The bigger question: how do Russians define modernity?
