I used to watch the original series in the 90s. And yes - you did miss something fun. There are episodes of the 90s American Gladiators, and the "rip-off" show - Knights and Warriors. Also look for the original Strong Man competitions (the ones held in some Pacific paradise, that had them deadlifting 400kg of gold coins, or walking with a citroen body, Flintstones style). Some other obscure (nowadays) 90s game shows: Fort Boyard Pago Pago (had lots of diving, and the "sirens" were basically tits-out, imagine how that worked for 15 year old me.
That happened a couple times in the Older AG show....I remember a big SOB dragging gladiators in the old football style competition they had. Practically carrying them with him haha. Couldnt remember what season or episode though....Also rempmber a guy called "Two Scoops" on the old show who had video of him running and jumping over cars....He wasnt a giant but his athletic ability was far superior to the Gladiators and he made them look foolish.
The very first episode ever back in i think 1990. It was the pilot episode so it was a bit different with less gladiators. But the two guys were big, pro fullback and the other contestant was in the NHL. And the fullback trucked one of the gladiators nasty. Then on the football one he trucked another gladiator. After that the contestants usually were not as big as those two contestants. The gladiators also upgraded to a bigger size. I think only 1 of them, the bigger one stayed for a while.
