Well done ... I was just surfing TH-cam when your excellent vid popped up. I now have a solution for nexts years greenhouse at our summer res. Of coarse we should all have a cheers to Bucky
I am planning on building a greenhouse and am unsure on whether to build a poly tunnel, stick-built with window panes, or a grow dome. I like the geodesic dome structures and can see potential in utilizing the vertical space for tall vining plants. I like the idea of having an area in the greenhouse to sit at a table while dinning on salads and drinking wine.
I'm part way through building mine. Quite fast once you've built the jigs, I've spent a week on it so far and built all the pentagon triangles. I expect it will take 3 weeks in total for it to be complete. I'm doing the 6m GD27 using 3"x2" treated timber. It's good fun and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the space for one. A bit laborious but not hard at all, anyone could build one.
I like that you don’t use hubs to hold this together. I’m building one with the same idea. It makes sense to me that the hubs are the weakest part of the structure. When you join the sides, It is a stronger design. Great job!
I got me one of those done and it was worth every single penny!! Every single time I get in is like a new experience, my pets love to sleep inside. And acup of coffee in the morning tastes like heaven
Everyone that sits in my dome says that it gives them a very tranquil feeling. It is extremely relaxing just to sit there and drink your morning cup of coffee. Mine is a 16' 5/8ths dome made with 1/2" electrical conduit with no cover. Freddy you are right, they are worth all the time and effort you put into one.
Well done! I imagine you may even be able to replace damaged triangular sections of the poly if that becomes necessary, but I believe your prediction is correct - you'll enjoy that dome for years to come, naysayers can go build their own.
The poly is wrapped around the edge of the triangle and stapled so you`ll have to remove the triangle before you can remove the staples ;) This construction method is also prone to leak where adjacent triangles meet and also at the vertices. Tape is appled over the joints as a fix but its not a reliable long term solution to what is really a design issue...
Nice dome! I built a 40 foot dome but covered it with Polyurethane rigid foam board and Densdeck on top of that so panel making was a bit more involved. I want to make one like yours for a greenhouse tho. I like the design and my first question about the film looks like its already been answered. Nice work!
Good day!! It's been 5 years since you created your dom. Great Video. Inspiration for us.. could you please share the experience you had ...how the Dom is holding

I hope this will help you with your project as it is amazing to make, wish you all the success.

AMAZING piece of work. Any leaks yet? Surely just overlapping and stapling the poly on each triange and running a bead of silicone down it won't keep the water out over time?

Hi there, in the coming couple of weeks I will post a new video commenting on the details you’re asking about. I receive a lot of questions about it so I will address them very soon. Plus a few observations of my experience having the Dome. Thank you for your patience and watching the video.
That is a great looking dome and the whole process is wonderfully illustrated here. The only thing that's got me wondering is how difficult it would be to replace ripped plastic coverings in one of those triangle frames. Hope I'm wrong, but I'm thinking "bloody difficult!".
To redo the plastic is virtually impossible. One has to come up with a different solution. One of these day I’ll make a video of my intermediate solution. Thank you for watching.
Very inspiring, I've wanted to build a dome for many years. Does the plastic sheeting rip often? I would think snow and heavy winds would cause them to break? Would you recommend har/rigid plastic sheets?
Hi There, thank you very much for watching my video. My Dome is up now I think for it's third year and the first plastic is still on. I live at the end of a windy corridor coming from the seaside and the wind can be seriously violent, but the dome nor the poly has moved an inch. As long as you put enough time in fixing it properly as recommended by Paul Robinson in his videos...Also there's poly in different thicknesses and UV resistance. It's worth looking into that as well. Regarding snow we only had maybe once or twice for a couple of days the fun of snow, so I have not much experience on that issue. For that short time and maybe 1" thick. Hope this reply helps you to have a go at it, it's really rewarding when the project is finished and you can have the benefit and use of it. F
i undestood the triangle base, but how did you calculate the angle of cuts 1:54 (for make pentagons/exagons) and finally the dome witout fail?? its 17º/2?

Great Job, looks nice. Just one comment. By using silicone between the frames you made it harder to take the frames apart for replacing the poly film. I'm wondering if the joints wouldn't be watertight enough without the silicone?
Hiya, thank you very much for looking at our video. Sorry for the delayed reply. The plastic in itself is preventing for a real watertight finish. However I have come up with a complete different solution that suits me very much and that has proven to work to a T. One of these days I will make a follow up video about it. Have a nice day. F
Hiya, I'm sure it has it's merits. I was attracted by Paul's (Robinson) design because it did not need any kind of hub system. However Geodesic domes are becoming so popular that better hub systems are being developed. I think it's a lot down to our own preferences and interest. Thank you very much for watching the video by the way. F

Very nice job, Freddy. I'm afraid that plastic is going to get brittle in a couple of years, though, unless it is UV resistant.
Hiya, yes it is UV resistant. I bought special greenhouse poly 5y UV resitant. Thank you for the nice comment. F
How long does that plastic last? I'm sure it goes much longer in Britain than anywhere with real sun.
@@deanwashburn7452 Hi there, thank you for watching the video. It lasted me about 5y. After that it started to rip and the flashing came undone.
What do you think of the star plate kit?
Hiya, I'm sure it has it's merits. I was attracted by Paul's (Robinson) design because it did not need any kind of hub system. However Geodesic domes are becoming so popular that better hub systems are being developed. I think it's a lot down to our own preferences and interest. Thank you very much for watching the video by the way. F
Question what is the slanted angle
What is the degree
Hi there, thank you very much for watching the video. One of the clauses in buying the plan for the dome is not to forward the details. However I would recommend to go the Geo-Dome.co.Uk and purchase the plan. It’s really not expensive. Good luck with your build. F
