Nice first experience in the carribean, but then we went to the Dominican the following month , we understood that we would not go back at Kawama because it's expensive for what it is. Still a nice 1st experience but that's everything. Hope you had good vacations.
A friend was robbed while we were off resort in Dominican Republic 30 years ago. We've spent nearly a year in Mexico during the 70's. It could be dangerous off resort, then. Cuba is the safest place we've ever been, including Canada. For a few dollars more you may get a better room and food in those other locations but not always so it's a trade off that works for us.

I tip $1 for meals and once a day at the different bars I may go to. An insulated drink holder is almost a necessity in the tropics. Sometimes at lunch I fill one with ice cream and mix it later with the pina colada I get from a bar to make it even better. The best bank rate exchange is at 32nd street. 5% better. If you're not buying souvenirs and cigars you could perhaps tip with American and not go to the bank. The U.S. dollar is only worth 90 cents Cuban convertible dollar but the Canadian dollar is only 72 cents so they prefer US. We change about $500 Canadian for our two week trips as we buy a few cigars.

No argument about the condition of the grounds. But if you go to a last minute site and click All South and Lowest Price this place is going to be close to the top. That's how we ended up there. A 5 star costs more with less charm and the tourists as well as staff are less friendly. And they have the same beach, pool, sun and a little better food and booze.
You don't go to Cuba for luxury, you go for last minute. I just booked leaving tomorrow and it cost 2500$ for 6 people for 7 days. You can't really go wrong for that price
