    Hey guys! I’m not a big fan of 20 minute videos but I wanted to try just about everything on these plates. Plus I had a couple mishaps 😂. I know some of you prefer longer videos so this one is for you! Thank you for watching.

    My uncle served in Iraq and Afghanistan in the early 2000's. He always talks about how he took a rifle round to the chest and made it. His plate stopped it, but he said it felt like someone kicked him in the chest with a running start. It cracked his sternum and broke some ribs, but obviously, he made it. A lot of people underestimate how much force a bullet can produce.

    I took a 7.62 to the chest in Iraq. Knocked me on my ass and fractured my sternum. Luckily, it was from about 300 meters, so the thing had slowed a bit. I was sore for a while and needed a new plate, but finished that firefight on my feet.

    Those results are why I would use nothing less than level IV or metal plates. That extra couple of pounds of plate is going to protect from broken bones too. If I need to wear body armor, it's going to be the good stuff. Level III is still going to get you hurt in the long run. I'd rather still be in the fight than writhing in pain from severely broken ribs. So, I'd like to see the comparison of metal plates and level IV, vs level III. I doubt there'd be much body damage if at all with the higher rated plates.

    • @MB-jg4tr
      @MB-jg4tr ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep always go level IV. I steer clear from steel, bullet frags will shred you. Even with a good coating or spall sleeve, those won't hold up after a few hits, they shred along the edges as the fragments slide along the steel, so the ruggedness of steel really doesn't hold up unless you have multiple spall sleeves on hand to change up. Plus they're heavy. Ceramic/polyethylene will stop larger threats. There's a reason they don't issue steel plates anymore.

    • @kenofken9458
      @kenofken9458 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The problem with that reasoning is that whatever your armor is, your NIJ level is always zero if you aren't wearing it, and with Level IV, unless you live in an actual war zone or have the luxury of knowing when danger will come ie serving a warrant, you will never, ever be wearing the stuff when sh*t goes down. Never.
      It's just not practical in any sense of the word to be wearing Level IV day in and out. It's heavy. It's not concealable, at all, and in any urban or settled area, you will have non-stop law enforcement encounters if you go around in public with the stuff. Doesn't matter if it's legal or not. You will have problems.
      Another issue people don't seem to fully appreciate is that plates cover a really, really small area of your body. Critical areas to be sure, but far less than what a good IIIA soft vest covers.
      It's not a bad idea for anyone or everyone to own a set of ceramic plates, but the only armor that will save you in the vast majority of scenarios is the armor you have on before trouble starts, and that should be tailored to the realistic threats you face. For most civilians most of the time, that means handgun rounds.

    • @GirlSmotheredToDeath
      @GirlSmotheredToDeath ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kenofken9458Great points! I think by not standing out and blending into the environment is the best idea. In a civil unrest, the ability to blend in is safer because a tactical vest will only get you in trouble. The advantage of being slightly harder to kill by a rifle is easily outweighed by not being a target in the first place, and that's why i wear a 3A concealable vest.

  • @majkiboy86
    @majkiboy86 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Cool content as always. You said that it is a level III plate so it should stop hits from 308 and 7.62-54R. Level IV would be for 30-06 M2. Not a big deal since you talked about level IV after that i think that was already on your mind.

    • @kenofken9458
      @kenofken9458 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and now. A pretty common configuration is to have a IIIA soft vest with a hard plate in the pocket. That gives an otherwise pistol rated armor rifle stopping capability. It also creates a degree of stab and blunt force protection.
      At the same time, if that hard plate gets defeated by a rifle round, the soft armor will almost certainly not stop it.

    The .44 out of a carbine will likely have a higher velocity due to the longer barrel length. Not sure that is a valid test - the 3A armor is rated for most pistol calibers fired from a PISTOL.

    • @kenofken9458
      @kenofken9458 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the NIJ standard is 1,340 fps for .44 magnum. In carbines, it can reach 1,600 or even north of 1,700 fps and that's where soft armor technology starts to reach beyond the limit of what it can do.
      It's kind of pointless to test armor way beyond its rating, especially in one-off tests, because the results tell you nothing useful from a statistical perspective.

    I wonder what would happen if you put a thin steel armor plate behind the ceramic plate. Would the energy of the back face deformation be spread out to the entire steel plate and stop or at least greatly reduce, any internal injuries? Same with a soft armor plate behind the hard ceramic?

    • @woodsghost9088
      @woodsghost9088 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically: "yes"
      A thin steel plate would help as a backer behind ceramic.
      A foam backer behind the ceramic would be helpful.

      @@woodsghost9088so u are basically saying a hard outer layer to stop penetration then a soft inner layer to absorb shock and trauma

    • @woodsghost9088
      @woodsghost9088 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@techphile3262 good question. Sorry I must not have been clear.
      A hard ceramic face disrupts the bullet and helps break it up into smaller pieces which have less power to punch through things.
      A thin steel backer would distribute force as the ceramic face breaks up and results in back force deformation.
      Having a foam backer will eat up some back face deformation. It's basically a comfortable spacer between your body and the armor.
      Having something like Kevlar behind a ceramic face, or polyethylene, will capture the fragments from a bullet or ceramic bits as the bullet hits the ceramic face and both (a portion of) the ceramic and the bullet are destroyed. The polyethylene would be a solid material which eats up frag. The Kevlar fibers would give but reduce the back face deformation and act as something of a spacer, like foam.
      Let me know if there are further questions.

    One of my pet peeves is when I go into a place that sells ammo, optics, guns, accessories or whatever is when the guy working in that section has no fucking idea what he’s talking about. You try to have a conversation with them and they just don’t know what the hell you’re talking about and they can’t even give you an educated opinion.

I understand using two sides of the (very expensive) ballistic dummy ($hout out to them) a$ well as the plate and soft armor (again shout out to Premier) . It was snowing but don't be lazy. Kinetic energy is half mass times velocity squared. So bullet weight matters even though velocity does matter more. But a slower bullet can do more damage than a faster bullet if it’s weight is significantly more.

    Soft body armor, such as the Premier Tee shirt, is level IIIA. It is meant to stop hand gun rounds, not rifle rounds. For non LEO wearers, you will most likely encounter a 9 mm hand gun and if it hits you in the plate, you will survive.

    This video seems somewhat biased. If you actually watch the trial, they go into great detail on the exact condition of his face. Which would be impossible if he was shot in this manner. His head did not explode the same way. You should do another video showing a shot from 2-3 ft away, which the prosecution was claiming happened.
