Most of the stake holding power relates to the length and surface area of the stake because of frictional forces. So when you put in a stake at an angle, you lose length and thus also holding power. Essentially the longer and wider and/or more shaped the stake, the more holding power it has.
But I get the point with the wind essentially trying to wriggle it up, and yes an angle away would help with that. I guess the point is, use a longer, thicker, and/or more shaped stake, and then angle it a bit away from the tent so that you get the best of both worlds.

struck me as cogent, clear, and concise... appreciated it.

Big stakes for pavilions are taking advantage of the denser earth ~10 inches below normal soil. That is why they need to be straight up and down. The more of that dense earth around the stake the stronger the hold. For anyone wondering.

I love the use of vectors to explain this. I'm an architecture student and want to conduct a research study on the relationship between the mechanics of a tent set up and the tent's surrounding site. I'll be going tree planting for a second year now and I want to be able to apply and conduct studies firsthand. This video was very useful and I'd love to contact you and discuss some more ideas and learn more from you. Hope all is well - Gabriel

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, my health is declining, and I'm not taking on any new commitments of any kind. Perhaps you can pick up where I left off. Good luck!
