I’ve been listening to Schubert’s quartets chronologically, starting with No 1. They’re all good, but with No 4 they are becoming really good, with that finale pointing to even greater things. It’s the first movement in the set that I think is truly magnificent - so far.
I'm in love with Schubert's symphonies, piano music and Lieder, and recently I've been listening to his chamber music. Have to say, his string quartets have been an absolute joy to listen to. Thank you for putting all the quartets together.
You should listen no 14. "The Death and Maiden" def. greatest quartet ever written! Also Mahler did arr. for orchestra, amazing piece, on of the most beautiful classical work ever written. Schubert is a raw talent, he should have a more prominent place in the world of classical music, he is a better composer than Mozart, he died so young at 31 and he wrote outstanding works of more than 1500 pieces, 960 of which were completed. It is beyond imagination what he would have written more if he could have lived 20-30 years longer. Talent on the level of Bach and Beethoven!
The country dance finale is one of the most joyful pieces of music I've heard anywhere and harmonic and tempo changes make it more fascinating. This is Schubert at his most inspired and beautifully performed by the Melos Quartet. Thank you for posting this.

The early quartets are too often dismissed by people. They are at least as much worthy of study as Haydn or Mozart’s late quartets, or Beethoven’s early ones. This one is sublime!
JANUARY OF 2021: This is a good comment section for American citizens..Schubert lived as a teenager after the revolution and smiled while he wrote his music in Vienna!..
Would it be even better for Austrian citizens, or Australian citizens? If Schubert had been a kangaroo would he have composed more for the kazoo, or would he have just lived in a zoo?
13:30 first violin part seems easy but is actually very difficult. It’s a fourth position (but more like third as it is in the key of B flat major) doublestop of two E flats an octave apart. However the difficulty isn’t in the shift from first to third, it’s getting the sound out on the E string (little problem on the A) as you have to put fortissimo on the double stop. It is very easy for a scratchy or uneven sound to be created. However paradoxically the E string is a very delicate string which can sound squeaky with too much pressure (pressure is needed for fortissimo).
I have to play IV Allegro as a violist for a camp I am doing but I was just wondering for the half note with slashes through them do you count them as it equaling 4 eight notes? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
Very impressed by this. Clearly a natural quartet composer. Not all master musicians can claim that.

The adagio in the first movement is just wonderful.

I'm trying to listen all of his string quartets by looking at the score. Your channel is so helpful.

If you're talking about what happens i.e. at 1:53, they're actualy *6* eight notes, since a tuplet is implied. :)
