    1st year doing potatoes. Planted 3 lbs of purple seed potatoes from tractor supply on May 7, dug up Aug 18. 40.5 lbs! Happy with that.

      Holy cow! Nice harvest! Well done for your first year!
      I haven’t tried yet, but feedback like yours is getting me excited for my attempt next spring!

      @@JennyNobody thanks. I think they've become my 3rd or 4th favorite veg to plant behind tomatoes, peppers and maybe Swiss Chard. Very little effort. Good luck next year.

      omg i have been weeping bc my purple potato plants suddenly look like this!!!
      i thought they needed to flower first before ready to harvest? mine are just yellowing/atrophying after being super lush green. no flowers. ok to harvest? how do know it’s not bacterial issues?

    Thanks, this is going to help me a lot. Just planted store bought potatoes a month ago and they are looking like a little jungle. Turns out they could grow just about anywhere. Even if they’re shriveled up in a bag on top of a fridge.😂

    I just harvested mine on the 30th. Baby reds were done quick. 10 pound yield out of a 2x2 space.

    1st year doing potatoes. The last few weeks I've felt like a failure watching them die one by one. Thankfully they were in bags, so I figured what the heck. Got a solid couple pounds out of two bags. Can't wait to give it another go!

    So if part has died but the other half hasn't, do I just carefully do half my potato pit or wait till everything starts to die away????

    The potato plant knows when to die after a certain number of days. It’s like the plant immune system shuts downs and bacteria and fungi eat the plant. So if you prep the soil before planting and spray the plants to kill the bacteria and fungi would the plant keep growing and give bigger potatoes?

    • @denyshadials5702
      @denyshadials5702 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A potato plant’s cycle and days to harvest is dependent on the variety you planted. Determinate have fewer days til harvest. Indeterminate have longer days til harvest. If you know the variety you planted (as in the name, not just color), research and see what the days are so supposed to be, which would be in the most ideal conditions.
      The size is dependent upon both the amount time they’re in the ground AND the eyes:potato ratio, that’s why there’s so many conversations on chitting potatoes.
      -Allowing all eyes to remain + cutting potatoes results in larger potatoes.
      -Allowing 1-2 eyes to remain on a whole potato results in larger potatoes.
      -Allowing all eyes to remain on whole potatoes results in smaller potatoes.
      A plant affected by fungi as opposed to natural die back is blight and requires you to harvest early to prevent the spread of disease. Look up the symptoms and determine if your tubers were infected as well. Don’t compost or reuse that soil either because blight spores can overwinter.

    My potatos have been in pots for 10 weeks and the leaves are starting to yellow and some are getting dark and spots. I can’t tell if it’s blight or they are dying

    Is there anything we do after we pull up from ground? Like curing or something

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you not going to eat them right away then yes you should let them cure for about a week in a cool DARK spot.

    We have tried several times to grow vegetables but have never succeeded. We live in central Florida and have planted during season but no luck. We have had the seedlings grow and even had a few zucchini’s start to grow, we pruned and fertilized and even used neem oil, and a peroxide solution but still got diseases and pests that ate our plants. I don’t know what to do or how to treat the soil and plants to prevent pests and diseases.

      You may want to add things that hunt the bugs like beneficial insects or row covers.
