Using detractors as a marketing scheme is so obvious. Every time he begs for tips, he says, "Come on, let's make my haters seethe by hitting the King's coffer." He's letting the false fame go to his head, even attacking Sarah, one of his most loyal supporters. Losing her would be a massive blow to the pigverse. I'm all for it; let's see how he retcons this saga and justifies losing his most loyal supporters.

Even well adjusted people sometimes have a hard time understanding how others perceive them. Because Phil has zero self awareness he completely misreads how most people will respond to his behavior. He also believes that he is extremely adept at manipulating and deceiving people. The truth of course is that Phil is not very good at either.

Exactly. He was never about the "facts", positivity or wanting to be a joe average guy at the bottom. He's a very emotional person who quickly jumps to conclusions, loves the negativity, and wants to be at the top looking down on others.

It isn't merely positivity. Phail only cares that other streamers are showing him positivity. His dents and their opinions are unimportant to him.
What Phil is doing towards his detractors is a big nothing burger. Instead of proving them wrong, instead he tries (and fails at) using the same tactics his detractors are doing. If Phil really wanted to beat his detractors, he would work to prove them wrong. The only problem is that is he can't! Don't know how far back this "Sarah" goes as a member of Phil's audience, but they are the person Phil shat and insulted for daring to suggest he restart the router in order to connect his new PC to the internet. Which, as anyone will remember, turned out to be exactly what he should have done. The apology he gave after that was not only half assed, but it had all the creepy overtones of an abuser telling the battered spouse that he is really sorry, but she shouldn't have made me angry, she knows how he gets sometimes.
This actually has some sequels and "Sarah" was seemingly not satisfied with the apology (wonder why). Worse, the whole thing made Phil look like an idiot and a complete asshole simultaneously, and Phil doesn't forget and bears grudges. So there's that element at play here.
Also of note, the following day, a sock account of Kirk kept directing some really sexist things at "Sarah" and Phil managed to ignore him all stream. Phil is very petty, and certainly not above this kind of power play on his chat, on top of the whole Elliot Rodgers thing he's got going on right now.

Thinking about it, what's going on with DSP kinda reminds me a bit of a phrase I heard: "The only thing meaner than the top dog, is an underdog that's just plain had enough."
This is both right and wrong, in a way and to an extent. It's wrong in that an underdog is usually someone you root and cheer for, and that definitely isn't DSP. He's way to angry, bitter, and toxic to fit that description.
But it's right in that he's had enough. He's feeling emboldened by this situation and he's taking full advantage. The issue is that what he's claiming is "seeking justice," everyone sees for what is really is: revenge. He's making excuses to justify seeking revenge and in the process, is trying to disguise it as "justice" because "these people wronged me first!"
He's exposing how much of a bad person he really is by acting this way, so I guess Phil is right when he says people are seeing the real him. He just doesn't realize what that really means because his view of himself clashes with reality.
