I just restrung both sides of my 2002 330ci. Your video helped me save a ton of money from the garage and a lot of my time! I didn't even buy the kit. I purchased 2mm of black dyneema cord for $8, and threaded both sides from top to bottom as you showed. I used knots and heat sealed the end of the cords. Thank you so much for the video!
Mechanic has asked for 230€ for repairing this (40€ for the original BMW rope alone). Bought the rope on ebay for 3 bucks and with this tutorial, things are back in place. This would've been a case of robbery. Thanks a lot!
Wow, you just saved my summer. I've been putting up without a functioning convertible because of a broken string all spring, and now I just fixed it with parts from around the house. Thanks for such a helpful video.
appreciate the quick video, I replaced my string with light paracord cut 29" long and just tied knots at the ends with about 3/4" tails. fits perfectly.
Perfect. My passenger side (UK - US driver equivalent) has been snapped for a couple of months now. This will go a long way in helping me reroute the new tie string as I had no idea the other side ran a different path. Thanks for sharing!
You forgot to mention that if you're replacing it with a kit and it's brand new bat wings you got to remove the screws that hold the soft top to the rear and pry the soft top off so that you can get to the one spring that holds the string to the mechanisms
vacbmw yes but they sent me a steel cable with stoppers on that I couldn’t get through the little holes so I just used the little light string in my bathroom lol. Works a treat.
I bought the bmw kit, which had stoppers on that didnt fit through the holes. Or have the correct endi fittings. So i cut the toilet light switch rope off and followed these instructions and fix3d it in five minutes. God dammit
I don't believe the strings come the same length. But since you have a spring in the system, you can set your own preload tension. You just want it snug enough to hold the flap in place. So, once your string is fully routed, close the top and pull the string taught and push the plastic flap into position and just estimate the approximate location to Crip the metal ring. I believe they include a couple extra metal rings in the kit if you don't get it right on the first try. I've done them before. It seems worse than it really is. You just have to watch the video as you route the strings and it's not that bad. To just watch the video and think you're going to memorize it and route the strings without having to reference the video.... ....not gonna happen. 😊

You really should have planned this out BEFORE releasing the video. It was too time consuming to figure out where all routes went.

Quick question how do I get my convertible top to stop half way up. Will it ruin anything ?
Arnie Cann When youre holding the top down button, let go when you see the top in the position you need it at, it shouldn't be bad for it.
