【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

This perfectly shows how animals truly do have completely different personalities. One recognized a possible threat and hesitated, the other one just powered through. 🤭
Also shows why some animals survive and some don't lol.

I've seen complete idiots nearly get themselves killed because they're too impatient to wait for traffic passing by and pretty much walk right out in front of passing cars. Darwinism effects every species. Animals unfortunately don't often know any better than to not run out in front of passing cars. But people do. I agree, but I was also frustrated that they let go of the rug so quickly. I wanted them to follow through and flip it completely over. But doing that would have required a little more planning and it doesn't look like they have that level of planning in them.

Hana is brave as always and goes ahead, while Kotaro first has to analyze the situation in his head. He thinks in other dimensions, after all he is not called the professor for nothing. First he has to assess the situation correctly, classify the object and check its composition before he can deal with the fibers in detail up close :-)

Kotaro passed the depth perception test. Hana failed and walked right over it. Kotaro loves the rug so much that he marks it with his scent glands. Look at how he 'wagged' his tail'! so cute!!!
I think Kotaro only reacts like he allways do with something new... with caution and interest. I don't think it is a matter of depth perception.

Otters may not have trichromatic vision like we do (they're more like dogs in that regard) but they can definitely see black-&-white. No doubt in my mind they saw the rug as it was meant to be seen. Kotaro reacted like we expect. 😂

Раньше я смотрела видео с енотами и думала какие они умные и хитрые,но когда я увидела выдр-это что то невероятное! Такой интеллект и воспитание,к тому же похоже что их содержание в доме не наносит такого разгрома как в случае с енотами,которых нельзя оставить без пригляда-только в вольере,а выдры свободно везде бегают,открывают двери и не грызут обои и мебель? Это чудо! Даже кошки могут нашкодить.
