    One thing I’ll add to this is that it’s always best to have the optic in hand to find out the exact amount of travel that particular scope has. For example, the 7-35 atacr I have has a mfg claim of only 100moa of travel or roughly 29 mils where mine actually has 37.2 mils or roughly 125.55 moa of travel from top to bottom. My leupold mark 5 has a claimed internal travel of 125 moa which is largely true but due to the rotation indication system in the elevation turret it’s limited to 30.1 mils, the vortex razor I had also was in the 120 moa ballpark claimed but it’s rotation indication system only allowed the elevation turret to go to roughly 27.5 mils. So it’s always best to have the scope on hand to test and verify these things first before making a decision.

    This video is for experienced shooters who truly don't need any help figuring out what MOA their scope rail should be.
    A video is needed for beginners to help determine what MOA is needed.
    A famous man was once quoted in saying if you can't explain something in a very simple way then most likely you don't understand it either. :)
    ps: why would you need a 30 MOA scope base for a 22lr ? anything past 200 yds is pure luck. and by the way the barrel moves upwards not the scope downwards.

    Thank you for saying 102 moa is approx 1.5 degrees, I wasn't sure but using my ballistics calculator I always plugged in .5 degrees for a my 30 moa area419 mount on my 22lr. Quick question, I know this is subjective based on 22lr ammo, I typically figure 30 moa gives me an approx. 240 - 260 yard zero by my calculations, again using 22lr, does this sound about right, thanks again

    Just ordered one for my 452, but before I order my scope rings which height of rings do I need to put out to further distance? Low, medium or high? Clearance of the barrel won't be an issue as I'm currently running low rings and the scope is free from contact of the barrel.

      I’m sure you found the answer to this a year ago, but I’m going to answer for the people who are new. If you’re only shooting 100 yards, you honestly don’t need 30 MOA. you can get away with 0 MOA base even if shooting 22LR. What caliber are you shooting? You need more MOA on your base when you’re shooting long distance. If you’re trying to shoot past 200 yards with 22LR then you should consider a base with MOA 15-30 to get you shooting long distance

    Which rail I should choose if I want to use VORTEX VIPER PST GEN II 5-25X50 FFP EBR-7C MOA? 30 MOA? It is said max elevation 70. So I should choose 30 MOA. But I think what if they already mean the half of 140 elevation? So I could buy 50MOA

    So, Using your formula I should be fine but @ 50yds I need 7-8MOA hold and @ 100 I still need 2-3MOA. I have a CZ-457 V-MTR 22LR and a 30MOA A419 Rail. I'm using a Medium ringset with an Athlon Argos 8-34x56 FFP-SF-MOA, which has 80MOA total. I have the Vertical Turret all the way down and am unable to Zero at either distance. I believe I need a Lower ring, but I think getting Burris sigs and use 20 +/- @ R/F to be able to reach 200-ish yds.
    Does this sound reasonable ?

    • @area419
      @area419  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not 100% familiar on how it works on that optic, but sounds like you may be running into your zero stop

    • @fasteddie1360
      @fasteddie1360 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@area419 No, I removed the 'Stop' so I could dial down. This Athlon only has 80MOA total and I dialed down ca 160-cliks, to the end. I began with 50yds POI about 18-20" high, per a laser bore-sight. I removed the stop and dialed all the way down and still needed 7-8 moa (hold above crosshair) to hit POA @ 50yds AND 2-MOA to hit POA @ 100yds with live-fire per the Christmas-tree. I intend to get the Burris Sig ringset and put -20 in Front and +20 ? in back, if that will still clear the barrel with the 56mm front bell. This is to have 200yds PLUS Zero available. Does this make sense?

    • @wowguy3562
      @wowguy3562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think medium would be a safe bet, if you could buy a cheap set of low rings that may be the ticket to try out, like the 10 dollar range, you didn't mention if you were using a raised / canted scope base, it typically gives you a little more room and I might try the low based on the base

    Would it be correct to say then that for an Arken EP 5. I would need a 50 MOA rail since it has 110 moa for elevation on a Cz 457?

    • @area419
      @area419  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd PROBABLY be ok with that, if the travel is perfectly centered when you zero. If not, you may have trouble with a closer range zero. But again, SHOULD work.

    Another issue is you mount you scope to hight. I see a lot of people using to high of rings. You want to get the scope as low as you can without touching and having a good sight picture. Your eating up your adjust the hight your scope is mounted.

    • @area419
      @area419  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This could account for a couple MOA of elevation adjustment loss, but the issue with optic height (apart from ergonomic concerns) is the greater ability for an off-level rifle to cause misses downrange. This isn't to do with the elevation cant, rather yaw along the bore axis and the idea that there is an exaggerated offset of bore line and optical line.

      You can. This is about adding adjustment range with a scope base for those wanting to shoot further and further
