THAT is how you play a ballad, phenomenal performance from especially Roy, but also the lead alto, and the whole group. They really showed how good this can sound.

Written by Benny Golson in 1957. He played in Milwaukee this past Friday and his website says next date is Blue Note Tokyo 4/30 - 5/5/16. He is 87 years old - go Benny!
Support Jazz in the USA! This beautiful version was in 2007 in Germany. The talent is still out there. You could hear music like this within driving distance of where you live or you can pay money for recordings. These people aren't trying to get rich - just make a decent living. Keep the music alive!

I recognize his voice and brand through his instrument anywhere He was blessed to bless many. RIP You are greatly missed.

I too feel a bit melancholoy whenever I play this ballad. I often wonder what Brownie would have been able to acclomplish if he would have been blessed with a long life such as Clark Terry. Roy Hargrove is a very lyrical musician whose ideas are enhanced by flawless technique and gorgeous tone. None better on the planet !! Honor, respect, reverence for Clifford.

@kalpubinc I was last Friday to a concert of Roy and I can confirm what you say so elegantly. Roy is a great gentleman of trumpet. He delivers such an emotion when he plays that you just have to close your eyes and you travel through the universe. Technique of some trumpeters is spectacular (Arturo and a lot of others) but it's cold. After hearing Roy, you are floating in the air, trying to rebuilt in your mind the sounds of the dream you just have lived (sorry for my english, I'm french...)

I agree with ashrafilm. Blacks in this country made major accomplishments towards the development of what we now call jazz. I was fortunate to have an "old" jazz teacher when I studied music in B'klyn. He always stressed our influence and the history of Jazz - it's roots and time signatures from Africa and its American roots in New Orleans. Also, he said how Hip Hop has a negative image, Jazz had the same negative connotations in its early development. Jazz was mainly played by Blacks.

Listen to Lee Morgan's version of it, both off of his album and live with Art Blakey et al. Lee knew Clifford and was mentored by him so his interpretation has personal experiences in it and I find it more touching for that reason. I love Freddie too, but I love Lee just as much at the same time. Both play this song incredibly beautifullly.

I agree with you for the most part, BigBoyDarrell. But less make sure we're comparing apples to apples rather than apples to oranges. Here, Hargrove is playing "I Remember Clifford," on cornet which has a fuller sound than a trumpet. Ditto for Sandoval, although most trumpeter virtuosos play both interchangeably. I actually came here today -4-7-12 - to listen to my favorite trumpeter's rendition of the song, Freddie Hubbard, on his b'day but the video had technical issues. Just saying.

Your translation is not right, I'm sorry.
    Flügel means wing or flank.
And horn is just a general term for wind instruments, like in French horn or English horn.
But it was in fact used in the military in the old days. It was a signal for the different flanks of an army.

@BigBoyDarrell All of the player you mentioned are fabulous no doubt. I think that we are talking about 2 different animals here. Arturo has more technique and range than any player on the planet. He can also play Night in Tunisia then play the Hummel concerto the next night. His versitility is unmatched. His improve is not the quality of Bobby Shew, Guido Basso of Miles. For you to say you don't like him? Come on, his playing is fabulous on every level. That is why I questioned you.

  • @fiddlercrab3

@ashrafilm Yeah but Zoot Sims is one funky white boy! (among dozens of others.)
I see your point, but you forget the most important part: we are all children of Africa, far enough back (it's not just a metaphor; it's science). The trick is reaching far enough back into your genetic past to embrace the spirit of the Motherland and say it with music. The problems arise when you reject these roots and try to play jazz without acknowledging them.
JazzPianist said it best, though: nobody "owns" it.
