Scattered Black and Whites has got to be the most beautiful song of home, family, remembrance, and longing ever written. If someone asks me what song I wish I'd written, this is it. Thank You guys, Jon Olson Sheboygan Wisconsin
With all the hyperbole at my disposal I don't think I could sum up how much I love song. In the naughties me and my band mates and girlfriend (now wife) used to shout "Scattered Black and Whites" towards the end of every Elbow set we went to. I thought they might play it at the Somerset House gig in 06 or 07 but no joy. We carried on shouting anyway. At Glasto in 2007 in the King and Queens tent we carried on being utter reprobates and shouting colours at the boys. Would you believe it, they played it in the encore. At the time we believed fully that it was down to a bunch or half drunk lads (and one las) shouting. In hindsight it was really just a coincidence but the confluence felt amazing. Whenever the inevitable happens (hopefully in many years to come) I think Elbow playing Scattered Black and Whites in a little tent at Glasto will be one of the moments that flashes before my eyes.
I heard this band for the very first time when the algorithm got it right again. My Sad Captains knocked me right out. The playlist I've had on repeat is a collection of the best "new" music I've heard in a long time. I'm about to enter cancer treatment for the second time in my life. Last time, 2012, I was introduced to Gotye, and found all his music, and listened to him a lot during my treatment and recovery. This time it's Elbow, and their music moves me that much more than the other. It stands to reason, I am more myself than I've ever been, more grounded, joyful, and full of love, and the desire for connection. Elbow brings all that together. Thank you for sharing.
One day I'll write here how reminiscent of my childhood this song is... and how strongly it takes me back there... to 1974... One day... it won't be for while because typing through tears is pretty tricky.
For some reason YT just popped this back up in my feed... but I'm not complaining! One of the best Elbow songs and performances ever. If there was a way to like it again I would.
I come back here from time to time, I shelter here some days. Exactly how I feel about revisiting this beautiful #elbowrooms recording. Thank you Elbow for being my happy place.
Please play "The Everthere" I lost my Mum this week - she drifted away gently in a nursing home in Liverpool. I am trapped in the states and can't go back (Pete, Guy - it's Ian, the Scouser who lives in Reno) - it breaks my heart, but then again, so many are suffering horrible losses and pain right now, my personal disaster is just one of way too many. "The Everthere" sums up my Mum and my Dad, but it perfectly describes how I feel about my wife of 20 years and her unwavering support to help me right now (as she always has). There is a framed print of the lyrics I made for her hanging on our wall - she can't listen to the song because she is in floods of tears after the first verse. Every note of that song is precious to me. Scattered Black and Whites broke my heart all over again - but in a good way. It always brings me to tears when I see you play it live. Thank you for ALL the music over ALL the years. What you are doing on #elbowrooms is helping more people in more ways than you could ever imagine........
Oh, Ian. Words just don't even go there, do they, right now? So, I won't add anything apart from saying that you're all in my thoughts and prayers and I just hope that you're able to get back to the Merseyside ASAP. 🙏😔💗
Ian, (also my Son's name) you absolutely nailed the description of this amazing bands' music. I too lost my mom, 11 years ago now, and this album (and their other), along with Alison Krauss and Union Stations' "Paper Airplanes" was my soundtrack for months. Healing music.
Still come back he from time to time. The song was my first elbow love and these sessions really helped me get through the shutdown. Forever grateful for the joy and delicate embrace all yours songs have given me over the years. Anxiously awaiting your Toronto return. Hope to take my mom who just turned 80!
So I start watching this with laughter as Guy gives a v sign and takes a big swig of tea, then slowly and surely the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, a lump appears in the throat and the eyes are suddenly damp. You remain masters of your craft you lovely chaps!
This is absolutely wonderful. I first saw Elbow play in the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth. (May 2001 I think … wow where did the time go?). I didn’t know their stuff, I remember watching Guy stick plastic spoons in a sequencer for some songs - their performance left me floored. It was astonishing. I walked out a different person. Watching them grow has made me proud in a weird way. IMHO this is one of their best songs amongst a plethora of staggeringly good music. They never fail to summon nostalgia and a deep sense of belonging in their songs.
OK.... Perhaps Elbow are the most important band of today. Name another who have such a connection with it's fans and beyond. Who's lyrics resonate so deeply. Each of us with our own reason to which they hit just that bit deeper. I've been returning to these performances over the last few weeks. And streaming on a well know platform... Please release a cd or vinyl
This song always reminds me of my Grandad. He fought in the second world war and rarely talked about it but sometimes would talk of other people he knew in the war. What a wonderful performance of a wonderful song. Thank you.
This song has always reminded me of my Grandad who passed away nearly 20 years away. Wish I had seen this as the same day it was posted my Grandma sadly passed away. Now it means even more to me. I cannot thank Elbow enough for helping me through many times of darkness and grief.
Who would give this a thumbs down?? I can’t give this enough of a thumbs up!!! Grateful to have fallen in love with their music more than 16 years ago!
MY VERY BEST. Please ! never heard that in concert and it was my anthem after I broke up with my ex, and Seldom Seen Kid brought me to my wife of 13 years. Guy, your voice on that track makes me weep every time and connects me to the pain and joy of my life.
Michael Nathanson This is my NUMBER 1 request for them to play as well. As delicate as it is, it commands a chorus that be shouted. Lets load the previous sessions with this request.
Rik Baron YES. There is Something about the song that screams this moment in time, right? The world has gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart 😉 lets keep it going!
This song has been in my heart ever since it came out almost two decades ago. The nostalgic lyrics remind me of the past memories I had or I wish I’d have had. Hearing it live in 2021 fills my heart with incredible warmth and emotions buried long ago. Thank you.
This sooo reminds me of playing Elbow through you-tube whilst caring for my Father (who had no Social Care) in early COVID-19 and shielding. It has a ring as I took leave from Military Service 19 77-2013(and quote “sheltered here some days”), at home with Dad. It’s just B -e -a- utifull as Dad sat in his High backed-chair also!!! Miss him - lost in hospital to the virus 🦠 later that May 2020 getting it under a pacemaker fit after collapsing on me in my care!! and miss him soo much . He enjoyed listening I feel as I played the live recordings of Elbow most days in lockdown.
Amazing to see all the different requests. Shows what fabric song writers these chaps are. Many bands just get the same three or four songs requested but these guys write killer after killer!
This is utterly beautiful. Next, I'd request either The Everthere, for all the elders suffering right now and risking their lives, or New York Morning, as a hope for a city hit so hard lately. Or On Deronda Road, because I'd love to see you all sing together. It'd help people, to see how positive you all are. Thank you for being a ray of light in such a gloomy time of our lives. Lots of love from Italy.

Been climbing trees, I've skinned my knees
My hands are black, the sun is going down
She scruffs my hair in the kitchen steam
She's listening to the dream I weaved today
Crosswords through the bathroom door
While someone sings the theme tune to the news
And my sister buzzes through the room
Leaving perfume in the air
And that's what triggered this
I come back here from time to time
I shelter here somedays
A high-back chair, he sits and stares
A 1000 yards and whistles marching-band
Kneeling by and speaking up
He reaches out, and I take a massive hand
Disjointed tales that flit between
Short trousers and a full dress uniform
And he talks of people ten years gone
Like I've known them all my life
Like scattered black and whites
I come back here from time to time
I shelter here somedays
I come back here from time to time
Shelter here somedays
