The intention of this gathering was to celebrate and honor Emma Smith. The date chosen for this was Emma Smith's birthday, the 10th of July, 2024. Emma's life holds lessons, experience and knowledge needful for all women facing today's challenges and any woman who seeks to understand her wisdom, will find her. We need to remember ourselves to The Elect Lady Emma as much as we remember ourselves to Joseph, her beloved companion. Emma connects us to our Mother Sarah, as Joseph connects us to Our Father Abraham.
Brigham Young said of Emma, "To my certain knowledge, Emma Smith is one of the damnedest liars I know of on this earth; yet there is no good thing I would refuse to do for her, if she would only be a righteous woman; but she will continue in her wickedness. Not six months before the death of Joseph, he called his wife Emma into a secret council, and there he told her the truth, and called upon her to deny it if she could. He told her that the judgments of God would come upon her forthwith if she did not repent. He told her of the time she undertook to poison him, and he told her that she was a child of hell, and literally the most wicked woman on this earth, that there was not one more wicked than she. He told her where she got the poison, and how she put it in a cup of coffee; said he, ‘You got that poison from so and so, and I drank it, but you could not kill me.’ When it entered his stomach he went to the door and threw it off. He spoke to her in that council in a very severe manner, and she never said one word in reply. I have witnesses of this scene all around, who can testify that I am now telling the truth. Twice she undertook to kill him. [Utah Historical Quarterly, vol. 48, Winter 1980, 82] October 1868 General Conference, also found at The Complete Discourses of Brigham Young, Vol. 4, p. 2378."
This gathering is a symbolic rejection of Brigham Young's damnation of Emma. Brigham's incorrect and damning narrative has been perpetuated among those churches and groups who come from the Restoration through Joseph Smith. Most believe Emma lost her faith and left the church, rather, the opposite is true.
Brigham accused Emma of attempted murder and then accused Emma of being responsible for Joseph's death. Brigham viewed Emma as a threat to his kingdom because she was a woman of covenantal 'fair beauty' and wisdom and she saw right through him; and because Joseph loved Emma. Brigham's jealousy perpetuated his lies of Emma as being an apostate and an opponent of the church, thereby turning hearts cold towards Emma and her young children in the very extremity of her grief, when she needed a loving, safe, supportive community.
