DVLA wouldn’t give details out due to data protection rules. I reckon they’re just unhappy with not having the V5 and got this bloke to call and basically chase it in a weird way.
Yes they can & do for a fee i'm pretty sure (It's on the DVLA website) or there's another way to know who's on the insurance of the car (Maybe for free) but you gotta have a good legal reason for it.
I agree with the others on hear. It sounds like a 'know it all' relation, who was told that the buyer was a little worried that they have not had the V5 through yet, so said ''leave it to me, I'll sort it out for you''. I wouldn't worry too much.
@fatwalletboy2 They are probably concerned their family member bought a car and still doesn’t have the v5 in their name. When done online new v5's arrive within 5 days. DVLA have to be notified immediately of registered keeper changes and it is an offence with a fine for not doing it so dealers holding on before actioning it are technically in the wrong. The V5 is a very important document in vehicle ownership (even your insurance validity can be dependent on it), in fact even the DVLAs guide to buying vehicles they suggest buyers should make sure the V5 is correct and present before buying a vehicle so bizzare why a car dealer would suggest its not important and just an invoice is.
@SmokeyExhaust A V5 registration certificate only applies to who is responsible for taxing said vehicle (company vehicles are not in drivers names, the V5 of company vehicles is in the name of the section of company responsible for taxing the vehicles) 😉👍
@motorsportsfan Not quite. The V5 is the keeper of the vehicle who is responsible for taxing, being liable for fines and a traceable individual/company the law or DVLA can trace in case of issues. For a private individual, you have to declare on your insurance you are or will be the registered keeper, so failing to be on top of that could invalidate your insurance. Consider this; A newly bought vehicle of which the driver knocks over and kills a child or anyone else (could be one of your own family) soon after and fails to stop/drives off, the registration details haven't been updated to DVLA for a few weeks. The Police would normally get the details of the keeper from DVLA systems immediately but if its still 'in trade' then this bow becomes a resource intensive task for the Police searching for the correct keeper/driver (the vehicle could have passed through multiple traders also adding delays tracing as the 'in trade' would only be the first trader notified to DVLA). Meanwhile the family of the fatality (family could be you) is left for weeks without answers to who is responsible. Same goes for other hit n runs. So the V5 is not only about who is responsible for taxing, the responsibility goes way beyond that. People get too complacent that the V5 is generally of low importance until they are faced with situations where not holding it in a higher regard causes themselves some stress.
I suspect it was a family member wanting to check on the process as maybe they haven't brought or sold a vehicle for some time and they are worried about not having the V5 already . . . Family are experts at everything when it comes to other peoples business don't forget !! The joys of dealing with the public 🤣🤣🤣
Hey up chop, i got into bikes 8 years ago in my mid 40's, best thing i ever done, my only regret is i didnt do it 20 years ago! Good luck with the cbt and i am so happy you have returned to the original format of daily updates!
💯 correct I've had problems with a car I bought off a dealer and no way will dvla give u any info they just ask your name and if it doesn't match the v5 that's it.
Don’t buy anymore motorbikes. My friend had 12 bikes and was showing a guy around his collection one day. This guy said to him “John, Why have you got 12 motorbikes? You’ve only got one backside…..
You can tax the car on the v5, 2/c part, they don't even ask your details, they'll just take payment, problem is if you hold the v5 back the customer is actually taxing the car for the last owner, as it's not in their name, when the transfers done maybe 3, 4 weeks later dvla may cancel the tax and refund the previous owner, you've then got no tax. I had a similar issue, car ended up getting clamped for no tax, legally you need to tax it and do the transfer as soon as new customer hits the road, if you do it on line v5 turns up in 3 working days, that's why they're windy about it, saying invoice is proof of ownership is OK but it won't save you. Basically do it at the sale, witholding v5 just coz your worried it might come back isn't the dvla, s or new punters fault. You want it off your hands St away anyway, incase they run up tickets, that many do. I ended up in court on a car, basically they went tru a speed camera 20 mins after I sold it, I ended up with the fine and points, do it on line st away. I've had bailiffs round for tickets.
As an aside James, you mentioned on Joe's channel about buying motability cars being risk free. However, my wife's last 3 motability cars hardly got serviced, because they've cut back on it so much and wouldn't allow jobs to be done. Her Scirocco with 43k on it only had one oil change in 3 inspections and took a week to authorise new wiper blades! Be wary of them.👍
Our current car (Mazda CX5) was motability. All services were done to spec at a Mazda dealer. Car was immaculate outside, inside not so much, but that was down to poor prep by the dealer (Carshop - never again). Luck of the draw I guess.
They did contact the DVLA and was told the car was stilled listed under Trade, which is why they contacted James. They are probably unnecessarily worried that the V5 hasn't been sorted out yet and that the car was apparently still listed as For Sale on the website.
Nice to see you the other day james, loved the Ital , bought back many memories of when i owned 1 back in the 80's . Soggy suspension & a crunchie gearbox I recall , sold the dam thing for £20 to 2 guys from Bristol for spares . Got my Dacia back , hopefully no more worrying warnig lights 🤞 i hate travelling that north Devon link road 🙄.
Think it’s just a family member surreptitiously on behalf of owner/buyer trying to themselves find out if the buyer has been had over, after all they don’t know you from Adam, and so have little trust. They’re obviously impatient for the V5 having forked out the near £10k and are worried about it because the sale has gone through a third party and not directly with yourself. You could tell them till you’re blue in the face that it’s actually the receipt that proves ownership and it wouldn’t make a jot of difference. I think once they get that V5 you’ll not hear from them again.
Yup. They just don’t understand a distant sale and holding the V5. There’s no scam, they’re just nervous. Either issue the V5 when times up or email the original buyer explain the law. Agree the date you’ll issue the V5.
Dvla wouldn't give names but they will say if it's held in trade, I've called them to find if I can tax a car if I've bought one without a v5, they're fairly helpful, I make sure it's in customer's name ASAP as I've had tickets come thru, hanging on for a couple of weeks is dodgy bud, I've had to appear in court a few times to swear a statuary Dec.
Always like hearing g about motor trade scams think its about tr you told us some more stories about chancers wanting to scam money back from people who have sold cars 😊
Very suspect! DVLA wouldn't give details out as this would break data protection rules. I guess this is a family member or friend of the owner, trying to see where the V5 is. Nice to see your classics inside. Have a good weekend James.
They can & do for a fee i'm pretty sure or there's another way to know who's on the insurance of the car (Maybe for free) but you gotta have a good legal reason for it. (It's on the DVLA website)
Yes they can & they do it for a fee i'm pretty sure (It's on the DVLA website) or there's another way to know who's on the insurance of the car (Maybe for free) but you gotta have a good legal reason for it.
With reasonable/demonstrable cause you can...BUT it has to be done via a form that is posted in to them..... They also won't turn it around very quickly because, as we know, nothing on paper goes through the DVLA very quickly! This sounds, smells, feels and looks like bollox. Gotta some clumsy way of chasing up the v5 "delay". Just block their number and move on 😊
The DVLA does give out ownership details for a fee but only to those who are registered with them and who have a legitimate reason for requiring the information. That is how the cowboy parking companies obtain your details when they wish to send you a ‘Parking Charge Notice.’ This shouldn’t be allowed because it clearly breaks Data Protection Law but somehow the DVLA is permitted to do it.
Most of the experts are hanging on by their fingernails or worse at the moment, the biggest dealer chain is in the process of collapsing after closing the doors last week.
Glad your going in a bit lower on p ex bids, so I am pleased, maybe actually ask them what they wanted to do a deal and depending on margin you may have had a deal, I'd not be keen on a tt tho bud with poor history. Offering that tatty polo for 4k shows some balls bud, but if they're having it, they're having it, excellent. On the v5 thing sounds like they're checking up on the v5, strictly speaking you should do the change St away, but I can see why you don't. I refunded one today, they bought it, mil light came on, went out and refunded, luckily v5 hadn't been sent off.
best of luck with your bike test! was so much easier when i did mine back in the 80s and so much cheaper lol nothing better tho after a bad day than going for a ride and opening it up!! im a two stroke Fan myself my ex hated that she wanted atleast 4 lol
If it looks like a scam and walks like a scam it's probably a scam. Plenty of cars out there. I'd walk away from anything that got my spidey senses tingling.
Would it not have been easier for you to have phoned the purchaser ? Good luck with the CBT, I'm 74 and sold my Honda 50 when I was 19 in 1969 and haven;t been on a motorbke since but my licence would allow me to ride ANY motorbike, not that I would though
Again its the dvla being in the 1900s. As soon as you pay the money for the car it should be signed over electronically. If they can do tax like that the v5 should be stored online too and a hard copy could be mailed out at a later date. Tho saying that it took them 3 months to send my last one through pethetic place. Great video i dont envy you having to deal with all this stress tho look on the bright side mr mokka hasnt called and the suns out. Lol
I’ve done a lot of digging on this and yes a car dealer should provide the v5c or slip when selling a vehicle because in the eyes of the law if they were pulled by the police they would ask to see that because anyone can print off a bill of sale with forgery and the research I’ve done says it should always be provided by anyone selling a car(including a dealer)at point of sale.
Hello from Ireland again, James. Great job, selling that Alfa to Joe. I like that Fiat convertable in the garage. How much is that James. Barrichello or something I think it's called lol. Don't quote me lol. Be Careful with these fools. Thanks bro 🙏 👌👌👏👏👏👏 I Buy and Sell Motorbikes James lol
I doubt dvla would give out any details, working for ambulance service and leader at local church, I am always thinking gdpr and careful information giving out.
Whatever is happening, it wont affect you. You followed process, got your money. Bonus for you if they do sell it as youre no longer liable for warranty
Remember bud your limited to a lower power bike when you pass, A2 compliant I think, you can do a course of a guy following you around both of you on 500s, I did my test decades ago so not certain tho.
Something is up there; the DVLA will not tell you even if a car is in the trade, due to GDPR & why would they tell a random member of the public, the status of a car..... But another thing the caller said got me suspicious, was that "they had seen a blue auto I10 driving around with low mileage" - why would you reg check a car that is not for sale ? The only way to check mileage on a car would be the DVLA MOT Check, but why would you? the fact the person is the same surname makes me suspicious too & I'd be tempted to speak to the person you sold it to & say you've had calls asking about it etc
Sounds to me like the original purchaser was trying to find out if you had actually signed the V5 over. Maybe they were worried that you were holding back on doing it? Re data protection, as long you did not give out any personal details and just outlined the V5 procedure you were following then I don't see any issue.
"I've seen this car and I want to buy it , but I believe the seller (me) needs to have the V5 document to be able to sell it to me, but I haven't got it yet, because I bought it as a off you, and you need to wait 14 days as a cooling off period."
Welcome to the addiction that is motorbikes mate. Remember the correct formula for how many you should have is n+1 where n is the number of bikes you have just now
Sounds to me that they are trying to push you to register the car in their name asap, and this phone call is just checking that the log book has been changed to them.bit strange though.
Watching your channel is like an excursion into a world of hilarious adventures and incredible jokes. Continue to delight us with your wit and creativity!🌮⚽️🎲
Is £300 less than AT recommended yes. And a simple search on Autotrader for 2010 Polos between 80 and 90k does in fact show that's the case. But don't let facts get in the way old boy lol
Can’t believe your selling battered polo for £4000 and begrudge giving £2700 for a 2018 fiat 500 that is pretty well mint , cam belt only cost £300 to do trade price
They are going to try and get you under gdpr. Wouldn’t be surprised if you get a call from original purchaser threatening to take you to info commissioner and they want £ not too…☮️
Purchased fuel filter for my tx4 from ebay and wouldn't provide invoice due to DPR unless i provided account details to prove that is my account so can't see dvla give out any information about a car .hes blatantly lying as its a family member trying to find out about v5
Good luck on the cbt bud, I've been riding since the 80s.Ive dealt in bikes quite a bit and it's hard work, bikers are very mean, I've lost on loads, but had fun, bought a mash 400 scrambler the other mth, 69 plate, 880 miles, as new, finance repo, motd it, new battery, I'd got 2k in it, there 4k new, just got 1595 for it, took 4 adverts and to cap it all he's now complaining, I'd just get them for yourself tbh bud, if your interested Aston barclay get motor novo repos in at various branches, tbh they're in week after week, take some selling. If you've got spare cash tho bikes don't take much storage. Cheap scooters sell OK bud.
If you do end up speaking to the guy again it might be worth asking him much he wanted to pay for the car - his answer/hesitation could speak volumes...
I 3rd party who called you is mental! "i saw a car in my local area and stopped to to ask if I could buy it" " i contacted the DVLA and they said it was a traders car" Sounds like drama and give that person no more information. contact your customer and inform them of all this asap! Doesn't sound like a scam as you have already been paid and the car is theirs!
Sounds like a scam, who stops an average car and asks to buy it off them, very convenient! Must be the owner asking somebody else to do so you’ll get the v5 done.
Wow hard to believe a 14 year old polo is £4k. I'm glad i never plan to ever buy a car. Mother in law was taking about a 10 year old Mazda Cx5 for £12.5k. I said thats 10 years old its going to be giving you problems before long at that age.
@@ChopsGarageyou can mate I'm in Sunderland plenty on marketplace between 1000 and 1500 take a look might be worth the drive up probably all have dodgy mots lol but still cheap
@@michaeltaylor1553 sorry mate you can't. I just did a search using Sunderland positive , with 35 miles 2010 to 2021 80 to 90k can the cars are 3795 and 4295. I don't make this stuff up. You cannot buy 2010 Polos with 80 to 90k for as little as you say in your area.
Same surnames? Yeah theyre up to summat.thats all just so weird. Ive often seen cars i like on the street but never approached the owner and asked if they would sell it plus I doubt they'd miraculously have my surname too!!! (or stalked the car until the owner finally returns......see wgat I did there?) To ask if I can buy it and then have the front to say can you prove you own it or have you got a V5.....amazed he didnt also ask what the owners sexual orientation was while he waa there (if he was there....unlikely) That just sounds like a croc of shit story to me...... Also this mystery fella has also gone to the trouble of finding out the mileage as he said it was low plus he said it was an auto.......the guys either mental or is in on some new scam against you that we havent sussed out yet.......also hes called you. What are the chsnces of stopping some random in the town then approaching the exact same dealer YOU that happened to selm the car in the first place !
But aren’t you breaching customer confidentiality even discussing a vehicle that’s nothing to do with him, he surely should just talk to legal owner… but sounds to me he’s just a busy body family member trying to chase up V5 logbook 🤔
Alternatively a sales receipt issued by a scam artist is NOT proof of ownership, not that you are in any way shape or form James but I just thought the statement needed qualifying.
DVLA wouldn’t give details out due to data protection rules. I reckon they’re just unhappy with not having the V5 and got this bloke to call and basically chase it in a weird way.

If you mot certain 100% drop it.
Our Government MoT Centre can book me in - earliest date is November 22nd - you guys are so lucky.
I used to own an MG Roadster, had to sell it when wife got pregnant.
There's no scam, it's just the new owner checking the v5 has been sorted.
Dramatic way to do it eh
Is there any update on this story?
I doubt dvla would give out any details, working for ambulance service and leader at local church, I am always thinking gdpr and careful information giving out.
Whatever is happening, it wont affect you. You followed process, got your money. Bonus for you if they do sell it as youre no longer liable for warranty
Oh yes. Bonus
Strange eh
@@ChopsGarage Do you think it's as simple as the actual owner wants to know where there V5 is but doesn't want to directly ask you?
Sounds to me like the original purchaser was trying to find out if you had actually signed the V5 over. Maybe they were worried that you were holding back on doing it? Re data protection, as long you did not give out any personal details and just outlined the V5 procedure you were following then I don't see any issue.
Probably innocent. You said it was for someone’s granddaughter. The grandad is just fretting and asked a relative who watches too much Columbo.
"I've seen this car and I want to buy it , but I believe the seller (me) needs to have the V5 document to be able to sell it to me, but I haven't got it yet, because I bought it as a off you, and you need to wait 14 days as a cooling off period."
Good luck on the CBT. Keep practicing the slow speed stuff. Any idiot can go quick.
Cheers
Welcome to the addiction that is motorbikes mate. Remember the correct formula for how many you should have is n+1 where n is the number of bikes you have just now
Lol!!
Kindest regards James 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Sounds to me that they are trying to push you to register the car in their name asap, and this phone call is just checking that the log book has been changed to them.bit strange though.
Sounds very suspicious.

4k for an old 10 plate polo? 🤦🏼♂️😂😂😂
Is £300 less than AT recommended yes. And a simple search on Autotrader for 2010 Polos between 80 and 90k does in fact show that's the case. But don't let facts get in the way old boy lol
Not seen the red Jag before??
Good video James 🚘🚙🚗👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thanks 👍
Can't you ask Phil at Moores to look into it as he knows the family?
Interested that you aren’t putting the new owner as the registered keeper - so how are you (or they) taxing it if it’s still in trade?
£3995 for the polo after a mop and touch up 😮
Can’t believe your selling battered polo for £4000 and begrudge giving £2700 for a 2018 fiat 500 that is pretty well mint , cam belt only cost £300 to do trade price
They are going to try and get you under gdpr. Wouldn’t be surprised if you get a call from original purchaser threatening to take you to info commissioner and they want £ not too…☮️
Could very well be someone just digging for information.
Purchased fuel filter for my tx4 from ebay and wouldn't provide invoice due to DPR unless i provided account details to prove that is my account so can't see dvla give out any information about a car .hes blatantly lying as its a family member trying to find out about v5
Love the video's James
Scooters can be fun
@@ChopsGarage yes bud, passed my test back in the day on a lambretta
If you do end up speaking to the guy again it might be worth asking him much he wanted to pay for the car - his answer/hesitation could speak volumes...
I 3rd party who called you is mental! "i saw a car in my local area and stopped to to ask if I could buy it" " i contacted the DVLA and they said it was a traders car" Sounds like drama and give that person no more information. contact your customer and inform them of all this asap! Doesn't sound like a scam as you have already been paid and the car is theirs!
Weird eh
I wouldn't have got involved with this bloke? I would have just informed your buying customer about the enquiry from this guy.
Only thing better than 1 bike is 2 bikes then only thing better that 2 bikes is 3 ect
Sounds like a scam, who stops an average car and asks to buy it off them, very convenient! Must be the owner asking somebody else to do so you’ll get the v5 done.
This sounds like money laundering this was very common in the past to was money clean
nice bike
Blimey the amount of people down your way writing off there cars.
Narrow lanes with 15yr olds in tractors carry slurry buggies
Why did you even speak to him about a car you’ve sold and you have no interest in? It’s none of his business.
Don’t bother painting that Polo, she’ll be back in 6 months for another car after she writes it off!
Oh dear
Wow hard to believe a 14 year old polo is £4k. I'm glad i never plan to ever buy a car. Mother in law was taking about a 10 year old Mazda Cx5 for £12.5k. I said thats 10 years old its going to be giving you problems before long at that age.
You can get a polo that year up here in the nort east for about a grand
😂😂😂 no you can't , sorry not a chance
@@michaeltaylor1553 not a legal one.
You cannot give anyone information AT ALL about your customer or discuss the sale to a third party unless you want to risk a big GDPR fine
There is a level of information you can give without breaching gdpr
Yeah weird
No scam, just a family member calling you with a bs story about wanting to buy the car so you would register in their name early, it worked, you did.
Guess so
But aren’t you breaching customer confidentiality even discussing a vehicle that’s nothing to do with him, he surely should just talk to legal owner… but sounds to me he’s just a busy body family member trying to chase up V5 logbook 🤔
Alternatively a sales receipt issued by a scam artist is NOT proof of ownership, not that you are in any way shape or form James but I just thought the statement needed qualifying.
Same can be said of any invoice , receipt of vat document such as a V5 really
@@ChopsGarage Yes I agree.
The car is a pill and want rid.
Young guy thinking he is looking out for own interests. Not really knowing the process or regulations.
DVLA and you both breaking data protection act!
Chops hasn't identified a person so no breach. A trader isn't a person so no breach by the DVLA of personal details.
Lol , how am I ,I've used no name lol
