  • Nkoma Senior Secondary School in Mbale City, Eastern Uganda, has refuted claims that it banned the Scripture Union club and forced Christian students to convert to Islam.
According to Shipanga Michael, Head of Department for Christian Religion Education (CRE), and Osillo Augustine, a member of the Disciplinary Committee and CRE teacher, the school regulated lunch hours to prevent phone theft and truancy. Students now have lunch, and the mosque, which was previously open all day, is now only open at 1 pm for prayer. They witnessed the mosque being closed.
Mulabi Patrick, Patron of Scripture Union at Nkoma SS, and Mafabi Beatrice, a nutrition teacher, confirmed that the school hasn't banned Scripture Union. The Board adjusted lunch hours to help students focus on their studies, which hasn't affected the club.
Hajji Soudi Muhamad Masalu, Chairman of the PTA, clarified that all students, regardless of their religious affiliations, are free to contest for any post, but the Head Girl and Head Boy positions should be held by Muslims, given the school's Muslim foundation, just like in Christian schools where the heads are typically Christians.
The school headteacher, Mr. Kawanguzi Abubakar, labeled the rumors as baseless and misleading. Added that they value diversity and inclusivity, and our students are free to practice their faith without fear. The Scripture Union club is integral to our community, and we have no intention of banning it.
The headteacher urged students, parents, and the public to disregard fake news on social media and focus on the school's progress, evident in its excellent results.
