Portland's finally getting some attention!
I was hoping to see some details on how they use the data to improve the city. This video doesn't seem to add anything to its own preview version.

The argument that Strava has 50% commuters, therefore all economic classes are (mostly) represented is a falacy. Smartphone penetration levels are far from 100% of the population and they show a disparity between the rich and the poor. Since Strava needs this device to allow the loging of rides, their is an initial economic barrier to the use of the product that the very poor cannot pass.
Well having a bike is a barrier to entry. Actually wanting to ride a bike is a barrier to entry. Living in a city is a barrier to entry. Being a human is a barrier to entry. You do not need 100% of the people using the thing to get good data. No one has perfect data but Strava data is way better then no data. Also making an inference to that old tired wealth disparity argument is unnecessary.
This is a fair point and it is one that is touched on in such a more meaningful way in The Verge Detours episode set in Kansas City about Google Fiber. Just because the bike app technology is there does not mean there is also a representative sample of those who might be biking and also might have smartphones and also might be interested in tracking their bike routes for commutes more so than health and fitness purposes. Giving the Strava exec voice at the end about so-called mythbusting is super disappointing. It is a fair point: who is going to benefit most? Is it the woman who works for ODoT, her friends and users of Strava? Probably. Are there those who will be hurt by it. YES. By dedicating the resources to the "Good" by way of the argument "Let's not let the 'Perfect' be the enemy of the 'Good'" is just such a tremendously irresponsible thing for a public servant to say.

I just want to point out the fact that your infrastructure is worthless , it is old and dilapidated and anything but safe . but come to the Netherlands and see how to build roads, cycle paths , railways , bridges, stations .
a look at this : America is so great and modern? I still think not so do something about it .

Why would you use use Strava for commuting? You are not going to get much KOMs on your trusted steel city racer :)
Why not look at all cell phones to get bike data? I understand that Google buys anonymized location data of cell phones in order to populate its traffic conditions on Google Maps. It seems relatively simple to construct behavior profiles (acceleration, speed, location) to identify which phones are being carried by bikes and use that data instead of using a subset of people that use a particular app. Can someone check my logic on that?
If 50% are commuters then why don't you have any challenges for the people that do not go on 150+ mile rides or do not climb mountains?
I used to ride bikes a lot when I was a kid, then I grew up and got a car.
