    The driver had the best job in town - nearly brought the station down with that growl and smoke.

    I'm so glad you turned back as I was hoping you were going to show us all the Clag that was left in the station.

    I like the Negative comments best!! I see more class 37 dragging knackered Moden trains some of which less than 5 years old, these were build to serve, and they really have hence the reluctance of operators to scrap them. Nothing raises the hairs on your back more than a Class 37, one of the few Diesels to have a soul much like the old steamy's ❤

      Old first generation diesels just GO when you give em the lot. No electronics working out if this is ok, the relays do their thing the amps romp up and they just feck off. You could whack a 56 wide open and it would stay at 500 amps for quite a few seconds where a crompton would just spin right up to 2000 odd and the speed would increase instantly.

      Indeed but there are only 3 carriages and 2 class 37 locos so hardly surprising.

    Jeez, those class 37's can wake up the dead. I've had those loco's pass me at a couple of stations, and the sense of power and the noise as it passes is amazing.

      We used to get the double headers pulling the china clay up through oxenholme and proceeding up shap....the sound was glorious when they were on full power.

    hrm... nothing beats the acrid diesel fog that lingers in your hair, mouth, and clothes. Also me...... there is nothing that sounds quite the same - it's music in an engine - love the 37

    I wonder what the oil consumption is on those engines? I know that some of DH Gypsy aero engines burn about 1 to 11/2 litres per hour and don't leave a blue smoke trail, clag, like that!

    A good old girl! You’d never get that torque from a petrol (if they made them) or electric trains, it has to be diesel.

    • @aetch77
      @aetch77 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The class 37s are diesel *electric*. That means the diesel engine drives a generator to produce electricity. This electricity is then used to power motors on the bogeys which drive the wheels. This is the same for the vast majority of diesel locomotives on the mainline.

    A bit smoky for a 37! burning oil like a 2 stroke, doing quite a good Deltic impression there.

    • @petermalanchuk8210
      @petermalanchuk8210 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, @TheFilwud, thanks for your comment. I believe the two (2) Napier-Deltic prime movers in these locomotives are 2 stroke cycle design. But whooo doggie, are they smokers. While it's not good to inhale, I still like the aroma of diesel exhaust. My first two vehicles were diesel, a new 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with the 5.7 liter diesel and a new 1982 GMC C-3500 one ton pickup truck with the new Chevy 6.2 liter V8 diesel. I got very good mpg numbers in both. The Olds 5.7 liter diesel was actually a new Olds 455 CID HO (High Output) racing block gas engine, which was de-bored and de-stroked to 350 CID, with the webbing still left in the block, not a bad engine, as long as one used a good SE/SF -CC/CD heavy duty truck engine lube oil like Shell Totella T 15W40 and changed the oil frequently, as the 5.7 liter diesels could not take dirty oil. The Chevy 6.2 liter diesel was an excellent engine, both used the Stanadyne Roosa Master DB1 or DB2 injection pump. I read that many times, when the 5.7 liter diesels were junked, but blocks still intact and usable, many would reconvert the engines back to gasoline burners and use them in drag racing cars.

      @@petermalanchuk8210No, they are four strokes. One Engine per Loco. An English Electric 12CSVT. About 1750HP each. The smoke is due to Piston cooling when the Loco is stationary such as a Station stop. Moving off again and the Power Handle is applied heating up the Pistons which burn off the oil from idling which creates Smoke, an excess of unburnt Fuel with Engine oil.
