Excellent deal for the Bruins. You get a legit top D-man that can do a little bit of everything and a bottom 6 forward that’s extremely tough to play against. Two things you absolutely need in the playoffs nowadays and all you really lose is an underperforming Smith. Great move.
It’s not about where the pick lies, it’s about drafting smart and the right player. If Washington does hit on that pick and Boston wins the cup, it’s a win win for both teams nonetheless.

As an older man in poor health, I don't mind this trade because I am not concerned with the future of the Bruins. I expect this is the last season for the next decade, that Boston will be in the Stanley Cup conversation. May as well go all-in as far as I'm concerned. Draft picks aren't a big deal since Sweeney seems to be rather inept at the draft table.

Next season, they are on the hook for the bonus money for Bergeron and Krejci for this season, still haven't guaranteed Pastrnak returns, and if he does, it will be with a huge cap hit, and they still don't know who their top two centers will be. In two years, of the only forwards they have currently signed for that year, three of them are in their 30's. Hope you're right and I'm wrong, but I am not holding out much hope :(

I would say Clifton will be the odd man out. Forbort has been too good on the PK to take out and I’d be surprised if they scratch Grizzy.

IRL, Sweeney has to worry about cap space and contracts 'n stuff. I certainly don't keep track of these things, but I would say this is probably it.
Keep in mind they're valuable rentals, essentially, both are free to walk.

Put Hathaway on the second line with Krechi and Pasta. That line gets dominated often and has no one willing to lay the body every night
