    Glad you know about nohu spines. They can get a lot bigger, but I never pass them up!! Hopefully now you know how ono nohu are and you put them high on your favorite fish list!!! I fillet them and cut into cubes then deep fry in hot oil with flower and egg wash or Tempura batter. Then serve on a plate of steamed Chinese cabbage and vegetables, then drizzle Chinese sweet and sour sauce all over and broke da mouth!! Ok you asked me, so, with big ulua, first of all make sure you get a ciguatera toxin testing kit to make sure it doesn't have it!!!!!!!! In the old days Never had ciguatera, but after it became more prevalent in big ulua, I stopped eating them. But, here's one recipe I was taught;: fillet and cut into steaks the ulua. Salt and pepper the steaks to taste, then get a big Pyrex dish and a stick of butter and rub the inside of the Pyrex with it so no stick. Squeeze fresh lemon juice on the fish, then get fresh tomatoes sweet maui onion, tomatoe sauce or paste, fresh or canned to your preference obviously fresh ingredients is better. Then fresh garlic cloves and green onion. You can use regular onions if you prefer. I like to cut the tomatoes into wedges and the onions into onion rings . You can put the garlic in as whole pieces of the cloves, or score them with a knife or mince or smash it's to your preference. You can also add mayonnaise to the dish if you like!!! I like to cut the vegetables into pretty good size pieces because your going to bake it in the oven, and you want the vegetables to still have some meat on them so you can enjoy them cause if not everything can kinda melt into a sauce and I like to bite into tomato wedges and onion rings with the fish. I put some butter sliced into pieces on top of the fillets and then all the vegetables and the tomato paste or tomato sauce you put and pour on top then preheat oven to 350 and bake for 40-45 minutes or to your preference. You cover the Pyrex dish with foil to seal in the moisture and it helps to overcome the fishy taste the bigger uluas have! It will turn into a nice sauce and the tomato helps to tame the fishy taste!!! Then serve with rice and the sauce can go on the rice too! Adjust ingredients to your taste and preference. You can do the same recipe in foil folded to keep in all the moisture and juices and cook over a fire or hibachi when your camping!!! Just one way, but please don't take a chance and risk getting ciguatera toxin poisoning!! I know guys who got it, and it's really serious and it could put you in the hospital and you can be sick for a month or longer!!! Understand the symptoms because they are really bad, like hot and cold sensation reversal, so if it's really hot your super cold and vice versa!! It can mess up your sense of taste and smell too. You probably know roi are really bad for having ciguatera toxin, but I totally get shooting them because they eat the juvenile goats which are a favorite!!!! Hope that helps!! University of Hawaii used to have the ciguatera toxin test kits or they're for sale at some fishing stores. The ones that really cater to the slide bait fisherman and the big island is full of those guys!!!! I'd go to the fishing store like don't they have I hara in Hilo where all the ulua poles are for sale!??? The guys there and the slide bait guys are hard-core ulua guys and talk to them and ask how they like to cook their big ulua?? Those guy's for sure eat the big ones!!! A hint! On the big island the really famous slide bait spots are usually super deep really close to the shore/cliffs. So they are not necessarily the best places to freedive. But there are some places, that they go to, that are amazing for freediving to spear big uluas, but some of the best spots are sharky and just spooky to dive. Like I wouldn't dive off Mckenzie beach park in Puna which is a famous place for slide bait ulua fishing!!! Its so deep so close to shore and back when I lived on the Big isle there were always guys and all the bamboo polls there and also they don't want you diving where their lines are in the ocean!! But that place they say is super haunted at Mckenzie and when ever I went in there, I got all kine scary vibes and my skin just crawled!!! I went at night once, and I just didn't like the vibe at all and I booked out of there!!! Big island is really super heavy for the uhane/ghosts or spirits, you know the night marchers legends and oh man I have felt some super heavy stuff and seen all the dogs go nuts howling and whimpering and just chicken skin spooky vibe brah!!! There's such rich history of Kamehameha and the warriors and the heiau and priests over there. I mean they did heavy stuff like human sacrifices and things so it's really heavy and you can feel.it in some areas especially if you have the "6th sense" really strong like I do!!! Volcano is just amazing when the lava is flowing cause there's so much energy!!! I know of a few people over there who actually saw a really old Hawaiian woman in super tattered clothes on the side of the highway or out in the middle of nowhere on 4 wheel drive roads who asked for a ride, and they gave her one, only to have her just suddenly disappear out of the back seat and they just freaked out!!!! They say if you ever see her and she asks for a ride or something to do it, and Hawaiian legend says its Madame Pele!!! My friends were diving in a super remote area by road to the sea after the long 4 wheel drive ride in, and they said this old ancient looking Hawaiian woman was down there just walking around in the middle of nowhere and people don't just walk down there!!!! She asked for a drink of water and I think something to eat, and for a ride and it's the same thing brah just like the legend says!!! And, I know they are not b.s.ing!!! They were just freaked out! Said her clothes were so old and faded and all bust up like no way!! They just couldn't believe their eyes but said it felt like everything slowed down or they were dreaming when she came and they drove her!!! Then just like that after an hour or more in the truck, she suddenly disappears into thin air and is just gone!!! I heard that's happened to quite a few people!!!???
    Man I really miss this time of year over there when it snows up on mauna Kea and mauna loa and driving over saddle road is so awesome!!!! Sometimes the saddle road gets completely covered in thick fog and you can't see more than 10 feet in front of your headlights at night!! I used to drive from Kona to Hilo/Puna all the time and it gets really cold up there!! I miss staying in my friends cabins or houses up in volcano sooooo much too! We use electric blankets on our beds up there at 4000 ft.!!! Especially in the winter!!! And driving in volcano National Park and seeing the lava fountains!!!! Oh man, one of my favorite places to go and stay for several days!!! Super fun to do with your wahine and snuggle up at night under the covers cause it's so cold for us in Hawaii!!! Lol!!! Gotta get back over there soon!!
    Aloha brah
    D.L.

    Dat viz doe... Much love from the cold murky New England chop. Gotta wait til June/July for the fish to come, but I'm still diving out here harvesting uni, oyster, scallops, and the occasional lobster. Was 9° with 20mph wind and 38° water a few weekends ago. Feet didn't warm up for days. Anyway, got a big dive planned for this weekend 03/18/23 over in Rockport with a few crazy kooks like me from my dive group. Should be 41° air/water with stellar winter viz of about 8m. My cat Dede and I love your vids and vibe; wishing you the best and safe dives from the New England North Shore. Yeeeeewww!

    Bro I love your content! My wife and I have been traveling the islands for about a year now doing volunteer work building churches. I got addicted to spear fishing in Molokai, the first island we worked on. Then we went to west side of Kauai and now are here on Big Island in Waimea. Love the diving here! I'm just a noobie though. Hard time holding my breath and going any deeper than like 20 feet. I'd love to go with you some time and get some pointers from a pro. I'll be on Big Island till August then move to Oahu. Hit me up if you're ever up for that sort of thing. No stress though if not. Just keep rolling with this top notch content my friend!

    Love all your content, keep more coming! Question for you, you mention that you're wearing a 5mm top and I'm assuming 3mm pants. Is this a combo you'd recommend for year-round diving on the big island? I'm looking at buying a single custom wetsuit for hawaii and am debating if I should go 3mm top and bottom, or 5mm top and 3mm pants for all-purpose use. Any thoughts? Thanks!

    • @hawaiihammahs
      @hawaiihammahs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on your size and style of diving. If you take a lot of drops quickly and swim a lot then you shield be fine with a 3. If your big and stay warm easily than a 3. If your skinner and get cold easily a 5. If you take fat drops and long breathe ups or blue water diving a 5. Butttt you also gotta add like 2 pounds to a 5. So your a lot heavier when swimming up from drops.
      It’s complicated lol. I’d rather be HOT than cold for my personal preference
      Hope that helps 😂🤙🏽

Stoked!!
