    This week’s film breakdown analyzes the rise and fall of ex-Oklahoma Quarterback Spencer Rattler. Rattler was the Heisman favorite heading into the 2021 season, but then things swung wildly out of control. In the middle of his 6th game Rattler was benched and he never started for Oklahoma again. What happened? Why did Lincoln Riley bench him? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze ex-Oklahoma Quarterback Spencer Rattler’s wild 2021 season.

    I think sometimes incredible talent needs to be paired with a willingness to be coached. For example, Josh Rosen is pretty gifted but even in college he ignored the coaches and has never really developed into the player that people projected.

    Rattler had some bad turnovers but it was clear that after Caleb Williams played a few games the issue with the offense wasn't the QB it was mainly the Offensive Line and lack of run game. Which Williams being a Natural runner did help open things up more but definitely didn't help enough to finish the season. As OU lost 2 games and almost lost 4 with Williams starting at QB

    Good point bringing up his technique and footwork. Sometimes, a coach shouldn't adapt to the QB but should make the QB adapt. Especially with a guy as talented as Rattler. Adapting to him will only worsen the issues at hand already.

    • @AlexRollinsNFL
      @AlexRollinsNFL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I think it's so hard for college coaches cause usually those issues don't really pop up in college, so it's like do you want to sacrifice some of the short term to improve the player in the long term where they won't still be in the program?

    As a lifetime OU fan and a 5 year coach this is a good breakdown, even if I'm seeing it two months late still wanted to comment.
    One of the big thing my family talked about that kept Rattler down was his lack of leadership skills. There was a energy with the team when Williams came in and each time they put Rattler back in it would die. I doubt that his offense were fans of his so that subconscious effort threshold would kick in hard which compounded with his own poor performance.

Smother the short stuff with man and don't allow a streaking bomb to get through the secondary, he also seems to panic and looks deep because he's not scoring. Great video, as always. To me, Rattler is a prime example of the pitfalls today's upcoming star athletes face. They get a ton of attention early on (way too early) and that can lead to inflated egos, unwillingness to be coached or mentored and believing their own hype. I think we need to remember, too, all the outside factors that can mess with a player's head: family and friends seeing dollar signs, agents trying to worm their way in, HS and college boosters interfering and applying pressure, etc.
    All I know is, when I was Rattler's age I was a clueless doofus but didn't know that I was, I thought I had things figured out. A guy in his position isn't just playing for his future, but he's got a stupid number of people burdening him with their expectations. It can't be easy.
    But, to me, I don't see how this guy could possibly make any kind of impact in the NFL.

    • @AlexRollinsNFL
      @AlexRollinsNFL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Alf, and thanks for the thoughtful comment. Especially with social media there is less of a spot light for playing the position the "correct" way. • @jarretberenson1214
      @jarretberenson1214 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m not so sure that chasing the next Mahomes is such a bad thing. The key is to get a guy who is good out of structure, but also able to play in structure. This is why Allen, Mahomes, and Herbert are so great. Even Joe Burrow (not an athletic monster like the previous 3 QBs I mentioned) is incredible when under pressure. Off structure ability helps quarterbacks, but you also need to be able to play in structure.

    • @AlexRollinsNFL
      @AlexRollinsNFL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jarretberenson1214 I'd argue that Mahomes primarily won out of structure in college so it's dangerous to target QB prospects similar to him. • @devn266
      @devn266 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so too.. draft was so weak this year at QB tho i wonder if it wasnt a mistake staying an extra year with such a weak QB class that just went through the draft. However, that extra year of experience usually bodes well when getting to the NFL as you are more experienced in situation.. See Justin Herbert, he even said his senior year made all the difference. I see him blowing up his draft stock and going pretty high this year. Wont go above Bryce or CJ but prob will be 3rd or 4th QB to go.
      Also, knowing Lincoln was decided on leaving by the 3rd game, I believe he was searching for a moment to try Caleb out, to see what he has in him, so he could become a superstar, and be forever indebted to Lincoln for giving him a chance thus making him follow Lincoln to the school he chose a 100% guarantee.
      Spencer was better than Caleb statistically and had Oklahoma undefeated this year. Their only losses came with Caleb at the helm and were caused by his mistakes. Cant help but wonder if they wouldnt have made the CFP with Spencer. After all, he had come back from losing in the first half and coming back for the win in the 2nd half literally every game that season. Being a 2nd year starter, any HC would've rode or died with Spencer in that Texas game regardless of his performance in said game unless he had performed poorly all year leading up to that game(See DJ ugialeilei) except Spencer didnt. He was on pace to do better than he had the year prior. Something is fishy, and if he never gets drafted.. Lincoln likely will be why and he literally ruined the kids chances to make the NFL if he doesnt ball out this year. Which I believe he will. Its just if he doesnt..

    Let's remember, Rattler left OU first. Then Riley left and took Williams with him. Now we see that Williams is probably going to be a first rounder, but I think Rattler has more potential. He grew allot at SC and even though he still made mistakes, he had to work with that O line they had. Everyone thinks a Heisman is the tell all be all for players, but if you look at it historically it is a death sentence for most QB's, Very few QB's have had an impressive NFL career after winning the Heisman.

    Yeah rattler made some terrible mistakes. But the inconsistent effort to maintain the run game. Oline was bad which gives the QB ghosts. Felt he needed to run when pressure wasn't there as you said. Also contributed to bad footwork in the pocket as well. But looking at Caleb Williams regression over the season you have to question Lincoln Riley. Last but not least the team as a whole was not disciplined. Not held accountable and lacked leadership.

    With OU joining the SEC, do you think they have a chance of being at least being good in a conference that tough?

    • @bolbyballinger
      @bolbyballinger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With both Rattler AND Williams gone to different teams as well as Lincoln Riley it wouldn't be a shock to see a dip in quality.
      As of right now though they'd be okay. The scary part is how it'll affect recruiting.
      Baylor and Oklahoma State have done well in recent years and you never know when TCU will randomly contend for the title themselves. If Oklahoma has a down year now, even if it's not THAT bad they could definitely finish third or even fourth in their conference.
      Right now incoming recruits have questions about whether or not Oklahoma can hold up in the SEC with Riley gone. Questions can be overcome, but if Oklahoma struggles those questions become doubts and the players WILL go elsewhere just as the team enters a tougher conference.
      The upcoming seasons will decide whether Oklahoma maintains its status as a top tier program, or if (like Texas) they wind up pretending their old glories mean they're anything other than a C level team for the foreseeable future.
