I read the books way back in high school, but I don't remember it being Jealousy. Just that Edward protecting Bella made it a great "hunt" for James, don't remember him particularly wanting Bella outside of that (other than just being another human to kill)
The obsession with this movie was like... one of the defining moments of the downfall of society. The fact that people fawned over this movie proved how dumb society really is.
