I started reading the manga in 2019, before it got to the big 10000 years hiatus, and all the while while waiting the next chapter to come, it was a gut-wrenching experience, i would read and reread the manga a bunch of times a month while waiting, so when we finally got the chapter i felt almost relief, that i finally got to see the story go on, some measure of happiness too. So to me, hnk manga, was a whole experience, in a time sense, which is kinda of sad for the people that didn't got to experience that way, because to me it was intended to be read that manner

Same as you when you ended noriyama and were predisposed to sad stuff my jorney with HnK was kinda similar. Saw the series, the hand drawn trailer of thr manga then thr manga but started to play some games and frogot it then a couple of years back. I liked the yist of it. The 'coming of age' story of a gem that needs to loose its childlike nature to grow and knowing it will grow based on how muchit breaks and gets trauma to get to the other gems standar. But thst was were all the lies formed, phos is imature but human like mindedand the fake matureness of the gems is their lack of humanity. I didnt get that at the begining because i was so driven by my perception of a story about growing up, not a protag corruption story. What makeed me return to finnish the series was a spiral of death, depression, doom and dread. But in a sense it was a carartic coping mechanism seeing all this content. The one that kinda started it ws the ending of SnK and then refoced it by playing the game Outer Wilds (this is a game i think everyone should play once in their lifetime, make me cry the ending like 4 times, but zero spoliers because the discovery is wat it makes it so great) this game maked me hopefull about death in a way i canot descrive im still fearfull but now i have a sense of optimism. Then i played Kill the pricess a decisions romance game that make me do some stuff thst im not very proud, kinda a game about all the posibilities of life and death. Then Signalis a retro looking game where reality and memory blends in, this also was a hard blow to me. Then i played Soma, that was kinda like torture, played again GRIS. Then i remebered HnK and read till 105 in november, feeling lost after experience phos as the prayin machine. Knowing that the hiatus would end soon i was kinda optimistic to know that it would end soon (hopully good for phos), but this is HnK and ichikawa likes to makes us suffer. Recently i read No longer human by Osamu Dazai. A semi biographic novel of what happens if you let your child fears dominate your life. This spiral has dominated my media in the last half year. I think from all this meaningfull media, HnK and Signalis were the most impactfull ones for its emotional journey.
How do we know what does define "humanity" in this story? On the moon Kongo admits that he may have only seen Phos as a human because he was broken. I've considered that a great way to encourage empathy in readers is to write in characters that aren't physically human and may not even have humanoid form but let them behave as if they are fully human and let those actions speak for themselves regardless of how unreliable the narrative is.
I watched the anime, didnt care for it too much but wanted to know what happens later so i watched a summary of it on youtube. I was blown away. I usually dont like spoilers but 8 volumes are already on the way this time BECAUSE i got spoiled. Its havent been a week since i started watching it and i am absolutely obsessed. (So glad i found it after it ended already and dont have to wait 10000 years :') 🙏)
Oh I remember getting to the Aechmea and Cairngorm thing... Yeah that was... Very uncomfy Everything about it just had alarms loudly blasting in my brain like I was genuinely very very uncomfortable cause it really felt like I was watching legit grooming unfold before my eyes. Which I guess what's a bit of the point if art and lore books confirm oh yeah Aechmea straight up never elaborated on what marriage even is ain't he such a funny fellow
I just started reading the manga after watching the anime first and I really thought it was some wholesome gem anime before I started finding about the lore- (WHY CAIRNGORM X ACHMEA??!!??! broke my heart...omg I still remember that panel of them two kissing) but I love how the stories unfold in the manga, it's much more detailed and I can understood more than before like how humans once roamed the land and split into three groups or something (Flesh, bones, and spirits) and how the Lunarians wanted to return to humans (I've only gotten to the 2nd book of HnK because I'm poor and I can't buy it anywhere except for Amazon). Since I've already gotten accidentally spoiled on Phos's latest 'form' I'm waiting to see the things I've heard about in the manga and anime. I feel really bad for Phos because I heard from someone that he was manipulated by Achmea and since he was the most innocent, he was perfect for Achmea to use as some 'tool.' Oof, I feel like I'm rambling on and on at this point- But about finding manga, I feel you because in any of the manga stores/book stores I have never found ONE book of Houseki no Kuni... sad. Anyways, I love this description of HnK and your videos, it really helped me see!!
