Yesterday in Swisher Iowa, I saw a slug set that looked like the lead unit, and crandic's new locomotive, I also recorded it. Great video though

They have a new paint scheme as of 2020 now. It is unfortunately a boring gray, green, and white paint scheme

For the Crandic it makes financial sense to use SW-1500 switchers with former SW-1000/1500 switchers converted to yard slugs. Most of their freight work is probably under 30 mph so doubling the tractive effort without going to a 6 axle locomotive makes a lot of operational sense and also means you get to run your yard locomotive's in the 8th notch to keep them clean meaning they don't build up large amounts of carbon and unburned oil in the exhaust system. Think how many times have you seen a GP-7/9 that's been used as a yard switcher for months get put on the rear of a freight to push him to the top of the grade with massive clouds of blue smoke pouring out of the stacks. Had to push a westbound to the top of the mountain 38 miles west of the yard switcher I was working with an ALCO RS-3 at night didn't really need us till we approached Chester the bottom of the grade 11.7 miles to the top max grade 1.97 per cent from that point approaching Chester notched out to the 8'th notch and watched the smoke fly with large chunks of burning carbon/oil thrown out the stack literally on fire. 3/4 of the way up the mountain the fireworks display had quieted down considerably and the ole V-12 244 engine sounded absolutely fine. Even my conductor remarked it really was doing a fine job up the mountain at 12 mph. On the way back to the yard we had to stop for Chester Fire was out putting out brush fires we'd started and natural when asked if we started them by the Chief I replied not us this engine burns clean as a whistle. Probably the only time it had in the last 8 years as a yard switcher. Until it cleaned out the exhaust system it was throwing a constant stream of sparks 80 or more feet in the air pushing that freight which is what it needed it ran much better after getting a clean out.
