Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet. But they showed this same mirror in haunting of hill house as an homage to this movie. When Nelly is dancing crazy in the house before she hung herself. I was going to say something about it when you reacted to that episode but I didn’t know that you were going to react to this.
If you keep your eyes peeled, it actually shows up in every film Flanagan has made since, in one form or another. In Gerald's Game, it's actually turned into the headboard of the bed. In Doctor Sleep, it's hanging outside the Gold Room in the Overlook. It kind of becomes a game to try and spot where he's going to hide it.
I watched this forever ago and thought it sucked because my dad said it did but I rewatched it on my own a couple days ago and it's super good. Mike Flanagan obviously wasn't done with the themes of this movie when he made Hill House
Mirrors can be used so interestingly in film and writing. I've sat back brewing ideas on a love story involving a magical mirror for a while. So easy to do horror or suspense or love with mirrors being their own entity more or less.
This is one of my faves- The horror feels so real- The illusion/trickery is so freaky... cause man, how can you fight something that messes with your head to the point you can't even tell what's real nor can you feel the passing of time...man that's such a frightening thing for me
I started down the rabbit hole with you guys with THOHH, and now am digging through your horror library. I gotta say, I love the way you guys interact with the media. It's very thoughtful and entertaining to watch. Hoping you guys go through a lot of Flannigan's movies!

A Cure For Wellness omg! I love that movie! Is such a clever story! But dear me, was I impressed on how things developed, and the overall approach to "wellness/goodness" was so freaky it got me having chills
Also keep in mind that the mirror itself IS vulnerable.. when it was cracked by the father falling to it. Well it shows that it could be destroyed but not INTENTIONALLY. Like when Mary throw something to it, Like the kids trying to smash it with the golf sticks, Tim with the stole and the one that run on the hallway and crashed. So it shows that it is vulnerable at some point because when Tim shot his father it wasn't pointing at the mirror or something the father was pointing with the gun at himself.
Nothing like a fun movie to question your reality. After i watched this alone at night i heard loud thuds like something fell but found nothing. Either sometime later or a few nights later(dont remember exactly, burned it out of my memory) most of my framed posters fell. It was eerie but i feel like the comand strips werent to be trusted 😆 and i hung them up relatively in the same time.
@@j0j01192 IKR? That soundtrack theme still gives me serious anxiety to this day. I remember having such a weird feeling of tension and panic just at the INTRO credits with that deep chello(?) part after that opening scene before. Just the pace of the tune and the mirrored city shots, chills. I would have walked out of the theatre if it wasnt for my friends.
This is one of my favorite horror movies, and while I agree she's one of the smartest protagonists and the mirror seems too powerful, I realized she made one fatal mistake. She explained her plan and backups to her brother, infront of it.
This movie was a favorite because it confused me so much, like this other great movie Darkness with Anna Paqyin who played Rogue in X-Men. It was such a "which way is up" script and that makes me more afraid because I need a monster or ghost and when there is none, basically it's your own thoughts freaking you out and that to me is more lasting and makes for the best horror.
I don't remember the plot of this movie but I do remember it was good. It's a rainy night here in my country, this review came at perfect time! I am going to tuck myself in bed, turn off the lights and scare the living hell out of myself 😁 Also, watch 'The Others' please!
This movie sort of reminded me of the Shining not knowing what’s real or not. It wasn’t the hotel or the ghosts doing anything physically, it’s the people seeing delusions and doing the terrible things. Except instead of a hotel it’s a mirror. I dunno if I’m making sense lol.
Mike Flanagan was the guy who finally convinced me I could take the plunge and make a film of my own, as his first film, Absentia, was shot on a DSLR with the same specs as mine, in Flanagan's own home and neighborhood. This one had a higher budget, clearly, but also took place in predominantly one place and with a principal cast of just six people. Now he's doing things like making a sequel to The Shining, something that in many hands would've been a disaster but turned out to be a worthy follow-up to a classic. What I want to see now is a sequel following what happens after the police look at all the rest of the footage recorded in the house that night. What would they think?
For those that don't know, this is what a Benadryl trip feels like. Not necessarily horrific, but super eerie, dream-like, and full of real hallucinations that are impossible to tell if they're fake or real.
All of Mike's movies to to reference each other in different ways Like for example the bedframe in Gerald's Game is the same one used for the mirror in Oculus
For a horror reaction u guys should check out 'Lights Out' at some point. It's from David F. Sandberg the same director who directed Shazam and Annabelle Creation
This movie freaked me out when I watched it years ago, idk if you guys have a long list of movies to watch, but a great movie that I don’t see people reacting to is The Warriors (1979) if you haven’t seen it it’s a great watch
You should react to Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's directed by Francis Ford Coppola and has Gary Oldman as Dracula. Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, and Anthony Hopkins are all in it. It's a perfect movie, and my personal favorite.
Do you have an opinion on which timeline was more enjoyable? Felt like present timeline was a bit more on the scares side, and past was more on the character-building and the family drama stuff. I have to go with the past, I was aching to see how this mess unfolded, and my lord did it unfold. Whole movie is a gem tho. Fun review fellas. I like how in the past decade or so maybe we’ve gotten some excellent scary movies that are more drama than horror. Babadook, Hereditary, It Follows, Get Out, Oculus. They’re so much more fun than the blockbusters. Edit: Also, very good point on the illusions being subtler. I never thought about that. To make this a 10 out of 10, having completely equal likelihood of both POVs being the truth would be better. It is until like last 20 min, but you’re right, by the end it’s much more likely to be the mirror than their minds, like 90% of the evidence would say that. Still an awesome movie to me
Originally watched this movie because I saw it starred Karen Gillan. (Doctor Who fan here) Aside from being really creepy, its kind of a mind job trying to keep up with what is real and what isn't. I really like this movie.
I watched this movie along with Ouija when it came out and must say finally I watch something chilly after years. I don't like much of the Indian version though they did their best.
Though the end is very predictable its a pretty ok flick but I wouldnt mind getting a origin story of the mirror & whatever entity that seems to inhabit it. :)
If you need an entertaining new show to watch you should watch Ace of Diamond. It's about an underdog main character who goes to an overdog school. It's really great but really underrated.
