It's crazy to me that Streep did not receive a standing ovation for her monumental work in Sophie's Choice.

Das Boot is excellent and has aged well. It is worth looking up the technical details of how the film was made. Jurgen Prochnow would likely have been nominated in an acting category if the film had come out in a different year. I am looking forward to your commentary for films of '85. Please give your opinion on Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" - one of my all-time favorite movies. It almost makes me sick what happened to it at the Oscars. Jonathan Pryce being overlooked for a best actor nomination is a real shame.

Agreed with all of your analysis. Get rid of Garner And Voight this year and put in Pryce and Glover But with Hurt still winning.

@@timgriffin3368 I must say, Brazil is a blind spot for both of us in that upcoming episode. Not sure it gets mentioned in any great detail!

@@chrisjrosen I am very sorry to hear this. If you and Joyce aren't personally aware of Brazil, I highly recommend watching the Criterion version of it. You will have another chance to discuss Gilliam in '88 (I think - will have to check) with Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Time Bandits, Brazil, and Munchausen are considered a trilogy by Terry Gilliam. Brazil is my fave, followed by Time Bandits and then Munchausen. I really like Gilliam's later stuff, too.

Chris, how dare you say that ET ranks so low on the list of John Williams scores. On the strength of the score's first 5 minutes and the final 15 minutes, it is the best score he has written. Star Wars and Jaws and Raiders are more in the public consciousness but that is because those films got sequels and therefore passed through generations. As a one-off film, ET is a film that people have to discover if they weren't alive in 1982. And when they do, they all say it's awesome.

@@JohnSmith-b3d Nah, Chris is good people. I just disagree with his opinion about the ET score.

Watching that opening number, it’s like Richard Pryor was in a Tim and Eric sketch. He didn’t seem to take it seriously at all, which I love

Have been waiting for this one. Dead-on analyses of the opening -- WTF?! indeed, though Liza was valiant., Deft assessment of the winners, nominees, what -ifs and should-haves; your banter back and forth remains incomparable, which is more than could be said for the banter on the podium. As ever, youse twose are the berries. More, please, thank you.

Joyce, you have to watch The Thing. It's a timeless horror sci-fi classic. Great acting, practical effects that's held up well over time, amazing creature design. It has every element you want in a great horror film - paranoia, suspense, tension, mystery, shock, fantastic set pieces etc. It's probably Carpenter's finest movie and justifiably gained in status over the years.
And yes, that year for me, will forever be seen as the astounding high achievements in fantasy sci fi and horror, along with The Thing, ET and Blade Runner.

Best Year of Film perhaps and you guys acted like you’re on Xanaxes. It wasn’t about Tootsie and ET it was about whether or not Jessica Lange was going to win her second in the same night over Meryl Streep.

Im 51 and ET was the second film I'd seen in the theater. Grease, the first.
My parents said we were going to get our shots and my sister and i were terrified. What a relief, a Huge relief, when we showed up at the movies and saw this gem.
Chris, i like you more for poo poo with Pink Panther. Dumb movies.
Not soooo true with Sophie's Choice. A lot of critics, watch Siskel and Ebert of the time, Lange was in second and somewhat close.

Thank you for trash Blue Sky.
I think the Crash win is better than this Lange win.
    Richardson all the way baby.
Lange gets nominated again 10 years from now for Long Days Journey, FYI, as its going to sit on the shelf like Blue Sky did.

I think if Lange hadn't had "Frances" that year she still could have gotten nominated as SA (as she mentioned in her win, Dustin was her leading lady) for "Tootsie," based on how huge the movie was, and her performance, but Glenn might have had a better chance to win in this scenario.

ET was robbed and a shame young actors are rarely recognised. Henry Thomas was deserving of a lead actor nomination
